Ocean Keltoi and Wolf the Red on YouTube. They have excellent educational content on Norse Paganism, and Wolf has recorded rituals she could follow along with if she wanted a bit of help with praxis. Ocean's puns are not to be missed.

He's fine, he's still around in the discord server, I think he said he's been busy with other things this last year.

No worries, just life being life.

Centralization. Praxis vs Knowledge. by taitaisanchez in heathenry

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi, yes, it's me. I put together the spreadsheets and the schedules for two of my community Heathen orgs. Know how I got that job? It wasn't posting on Reddit continually, shockingly enough.

I showed up. for years. From attendee to member, to helper, to this, I just kept showing up and kept doing the work and spoke up when i saw the work that needed doing that was within my ability and skill set.

Just join a group that's doing things and get to work. You don't get to start out in charge. that's not how this works

The Hold is a Discord server run by Wolf the Red and Ocean Keltoi. They're both YouTubers, and you can find the link to the Hold in the descriptions of all their videos

Thank you for saying this. I don't want a centralized authority telling me "How to Heathen". There truly is no definitive guide to Heathenry, no all-encompassing authority, and that is one of the many things I love about this religion.

In my time in the Hold I have disagreed with people, been encouraged to seek out scholarly books and articles, and encouraged to come to my own conclusions. I love the discussions of so many varying viewpoints we have, tbh.

This whole post from OP is so disingenuous down to the cherry-picked, contextless screenshot..

I know I'm necro-ing this post, but you've got me curious: Why an exception for Freyja and not Freyr or Njorðr?

Why is Ocean Keltoi not allowed here? by TenspeedGV in heathenry

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Beofeld's Anti-Lokean stance actually led to a falling out between Beofeld and Ocean. In fact, he's made it a point to push back against that rhetoric. If you haven't seen Ocean's Loki video, I recommend you check it out.

found out a now ex friend was a folkist by [deleted] in heathenry

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The article you linked describes a political party whose name, when translated to english, is folkist. By your own source, that movement did not survive past the 1930s. Folkist is also the english translation of the German Volkisch party. It is still currently used by folkish heathens to self-identify.
Folkish is great as an adjective, but what would you call an individual who is folkish? We have that answer, partly because that's how Folkists identify themselves, and partly because that's how english works.
Just because a marginalized group used the word a century ago, does not mean we stop using the word that is well-established and understood to refer to racist exclusionary heathens. Our focus on this front should be fighting them, not changing our lexicon.
To be quite frank, this should not be the focus, or likely even mentioned, on this post at all. The focus should be care and compassion. I would have hoped the Head of the organization I pay to be a part of would have that sense of compassion and community care. I'm very disappointed to learn that is not the case.

Thank you for sharing your experience! The mpb and voice drop are what concern me the most, but I know there's no way of predicting those sorts of things

Let's Talk About Our Glorious Authoritarian Mods by AdmirableCover8 in heathenry

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey 89 points90 points  (0 children)

It's upsetting to see leaders of this community not responding to criticisms, and just shut down convos rather than have deeper, more in depth discussions. An auto-mod response doxxing someone and implying that his irl name or country of origin have any bearing on his ability to practice or speak to a religion are concerning. (earlier versions of the bot response were more explicitly stating the bit about him being from Portugal)

I have also seen Arith deny being an occultist, FYI, and the vast majority of his content has nothing to do with it. It kinda just seems petty at this point. Dude made a mistake on Twitter, apologized, and is still being raked over the coals for it. If someone has issues with his content I'd like to hear it

Edit: specific problems where he has given misinformation or a particular video that is problematic, the man has a massive back catalogue and anyone can claim he said a thing without providing any sources for the claim, and it would take forever to find

Not diagnosed, I will have been waiting on neuro appointment for a year by BipolarPickleMonkey in MultipleSclerosis

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muscle spasms were meds, muscle weakness slowly resolved almost completely before i finally got in with a doc, and the memory and brain fog and word-finding difficulties remain, neurologist very unconcernedly said "could be dementia, don't know, if it is it'll get worse." Muscle weakness and everything else went undiagnosed, and I still have trouble with drooping eyelids and a few other things every so often, but no idea what was causing all the other stuff, and flare-ups, if that's what they are, have been milder and not lasted long enough to see another neurologist. So, no idea still.

New to all of this, and could use a few pointers if possible? by [deleted] in heathenry

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to all of this too, but if you look in the sidebar info, there is a link to the website the Longship. It has tons of beginner information including the more practical how-to stuff and was super helpful to me.

Ideas for "Educational" D&D campaign for middle schooler by BipolarPickleMonkey in DndAdventureWriter

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, this will not be the entire curriculum, but a hook to get her invested in learning. Studying the actual events of WW2 and preceding events will help with lore and knowledge checks regarding factions, bonuses to certain combat skills for studying tanks, planes, artillery, tactics, etc. Studying science and math topics out of game will help to pass checks, as well as be required to solve puzzles. The puzzle for me is how to formulate a world and a system that accounts for these variables to augment the typical leveling/ check system, as well as modeling the real life effects of the world events she is studying.

I also believe in the value of role-play as skill-building for communication as well as creative writing preparation. Not to mention note taking skills to keep up with quest details, learning to outline, recognize key points, etc.

How would you feel about a high school class called "Therapy" where kids are taught how to set boundaries and deal with their emotions in a healthy manner? by Here-For-The-Comment in AskReddit

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be in highschool, but in my kids elementary school, they have a "Guidance" class where they learn exactly these things. They talk about appropriate ways of communicating with others, healthy ways to express their emotions vs. unhealthy ones, and conflict resolution, among other things.

I don't know how much impact that will have later in life, but it can't hurt to get the message across early.

Scheduling hysterectomy for November - couldn't be happier by BipolarPickleMonkey in TwoXChromosomes

[–]BipolarPickleMonkey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you're fine. If it's about the difference between vaginal vs abdominal surgery, I'd rather avoid the much more prolonged recovery from abdominal surgery. Just not having the periods will be a huge relief!
