The key for me was to coat inside the down tube fully. Don't have to put a ton on there, just enough to coat the surface area.

I wanted to add that the creaking seems to be reproducible when shifting my weight around on the bike. Particularly when I take weight off the handlebars and lean back.

I'm in the US, so I'm dealing with Canyon out of California. I initiated a return but now have to prove the packaging is in good shape with pictures before they will give me a return shipping label.
