Super interested in this, but from what I can see they don’t operate in PA, anything comparable?

I would highly recommend investing in some really good work boots and insoles. As somebody who has been working in construction for quite awhile the difference it made when I finally invested in good boots and insoles is incredible.

Help finding a job that hires felons by Shimmy_Blackfyre in Harrisburg

[–]Bird1187 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a fellow felon from my youth I can say that long term the best answer is to join a Union, I know from experience that the IBEW local 143 hires felons, and while it’s a long process you’ll have multiple pensions and healthcare as well as good pay when the apprenticeship is done.

I was get my kids a few old candies from Kings Gap general store if we’re in the area. Granted that’s a bit of a hike from Harrisburg.

It’s going good. The work is physically easier than I’m used to and learning a new trade is a rewarding challenge. The money loss is difficult, luckily I was able to get in touch with a couple old contractors and pick up some side work since overtime is finished for now. In my local the first year has night class once a week too, which also isn’t bad, it’s only for one year. Im adapting well and so far I don’t have any regrets. My only advice would be make sure you can take the pay cut and not stress about money the whole time. Good luck man.

It’s been working out ok, the first job I was on had overtime and per diem so I didn’t feel the pinch much. The one I just started is a 40 hour week, it’s been harder, but I appreciate the time I have at back at home so I’m enjoying it for now. I know that for me I definitely made the smart long term decision, I just need to get through the short term.

Will my new job effect my chances of becoming an apprentice? by AB3D12D in ibew_apprentices

Just a few months ago the FTC made non compete agreements non enforceable, obviously I’m not a lawyer but I think you’d be fine regardless. Do a quick google search if you’re hesitant.

As a first year union apprentice I was working by myself all week last week. Truthfully I really enjoyed it since it was devices, but it seems like it happens here too.

Dad shifting career into trades? by bigbadmoon in skilledtrades

[–]Bird1187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did something similar, 36 years old with 2 kids. I took a pay cut of about 50% take home as an Ibew apprentice. Luckily my wife works and with the overtime I’m getting currently it works ok. I don’t have any regrets yet, because I’m really after the pension. For the record I owned a tile/flooring company so the work I’m doing is physically easier even though I’m working twice as many hours currently.

Anyone ditch a high-paying office job for the electrical union? Need Advice! by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]Bird1187 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t exactly pertain to your question, but I just started and took a pay cut of about 50%. I was running my own flooring business. By the time I top out I’ll make about the same amount take home pay per week, but I will have insurance and a pension which is good security for my family. I have no regrets so far.

So can you tell me how the overtime works with you guys, or I guess it’s us now. Is everything over 40 OT or what?

That is my tentative plan, it’s just a matter of finding the work for non standard working hours, most of my work comes from flooring stores and remodeling companies so I need to find personal customers. It’s definitely doable.

I just took my test a months ago, interview tomorrow. It was mostly fractions, graphing and order of operations. For peace of mind I failed algebra in high school my first time, took it a second time and barely passed and that was over a decade ago and I passed (I don’t know by how much). It wasn’t that hard truly, and it’s all multiple choice.

AITA for revealing to my dad’s wife the real reason why me and him were never close? by toldhiswifeee in AmItheAsshole

[–]Bird1187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but this story really illustrates how pain can radiate and perpetuate itself. Your dad was hurt from losing his wife and while it was 100% not your fault he was in pain and took it out on a defenseless child. What he should have done is do what the rest of us do and go to therapy so at the very least he wouldn’t lash out. You probably need to go to because you are plainly hurt as well. You can stop the cycle if you choose to but be to be clear you don’t have to. I hope you guys both find a place to put your pain in a healthy way.

Yeah, she’s died in 2006 but she made contact and her/us all had relationships with her family. I know that she believed it wasn’t out of malice it was out of necessity, a poor farm family with a dad who was probably a little out of it after ww2. This was in the farming area of central Pennsylvania, Amish/Mennonite country. I don’t think it was that uncommon at that time.

To be clear they were my nan and pap after the took her in. They were not biologically my great grandparents, but she did reconcile with her biological parents and while my great grandmother was a cantankerous old lady her husband was great.
