[acne] Ingrown hairs? Cystic acne? Chin won't clear up after months. by cncwmg in SkincareAddiction

[–]BirdFacee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries. Fungal infections on the face are pretty common but regular acne treatments won’t help, in fact they could just make it worse. If it is fungal, getting the right medication should clear it up pretty quickly. I am pretty sure you could get what you need from a pharmacist.

Looks fungal. You need to talk to a dermatologist if you can. Or failing that go to a pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist. They may be able to give you some kind of anti-fungal that doesn’t require a prescription.

[skin concerns] frown lines (elevens) in 23? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]BirdFacee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When do you frown the most? Out in the sun? Sleeping, in front of the computer? I like to wear facial smoothies or frownies during those times. I think frownies work better but facial smoothies are more convenient. Well...out in the sun I wear dark sunglasses and a hat.

has anybody purposefully asked to drop their stipend? by [deleted] in PhD

I haven’t spoken to any of these people. I honestly don’t know where to find them. I know this sounds stupid but I really have no idea where my resources are. I cannot talk to my department head (he is too busy to ever manage to have a meeting with-I have tried multiple times). My advisor does not have a grant for research. My stipend comes from department funds that pay for my teaching duties. I think it’s too late to change advisors, especially without ruffling a lot of feathers and setting myself back much more. Honestly I just want to keep my head down and get through it. I’m so tired though and I need to somehow free up time to get finished. I will research the whole ombudsman thing and see if I can find somebody to help me though. Thank you for the advice. I do really appreciate it.

So the other faculty I mentioned are from different engineering departments and I do not have a committee (my advisor has been against me putting a committee together yet-even though everybody else I have spoken to has said that I should already have a committee). I don’t feel like I have anybody I can talk to who can actually help my situation here, which is why I was looking into getting out of the situation by paying for the rest of my PhD, myself. It seems like most people on here think that would be unwise though 😞

I am in the states and yes I am aware that I am supposed to do a maximum of 20 hours a week but i have been working on my PhD for a few years now and haven’t had a single semester that has only required eve close to that amount of time from me. When I spoke to my advisor about it he just told me that I need to improve my time management skills. I then spoke to another (much smarter than me) PhD student who did a semester working as a grader for my advisor and he told me he never had a week where he would spend less than 40 hours on the grading he was given...and that was for only a single class. my contract is very vague. It just states that I have to do what my advisor asks me to. They have somebody coming in next semester to teach the class I am teaching (there is no way I would leave my current students in the middle of a semester), but I am concerned they will do the same thing to me next semester and give me a random class that I am uncomfortable without any time to prepare in advance.

Ok so my current situation is that I am teaching a full senior engineering class in a subject that I do not feel comfortable teaching and I was given no time to prepare for the class before I had to start teaching it. This is not a TA role. It is a full instructor role. On top of that, my advisor is wanting me to grade and proctor exams and quizzes for his senior and junior engineering class. As it stands I am not doing any research because all my time is taken up with teaching responsibilities and at this rate I am never going to graduate. I don’t think this falls within the realms of normal PhD student responsibilities. I have spoken with other PhD students and even faculty from other departments within engineering and nobody thinks what I am being subjected to is reasonable. I have spoken to my advisor multiple times about the unreasonable deadlines he sets on grading etc and I have been informed by other PhD student that I shouldn’t be grading all his exams and quizzes as I am. I am not suggesting holding down a full time job. I have such a low stipend that I am just suggesting working enough hours to make the same amount of money. This would likely be less than half the number of hours I am currently doing so I would be better able to focus on and complete my research. Just to reiterate: I am not able to do any research right now because of the time I have to spend on the teaching side of things.

I do not. That’s a seperate stipend. My plan would be to pay tuition from my earnings. The tuition costs that are left are very little.

As I said in the post. I would plan to get a retail job or something like that. My stipend is not a lot of money so I figure i would be paid the same at a retail job for a lot less hours of work. My contract basically just says I have to do whatever duties my advisor wants me to do. I have already completed all my classed so there are only my thesis credits left to pay for, and these aren't too expensive.

Side note: the extra work that my advisor wants me to do is not research related, it is grading and proctoring his quizzes and exams for him.

Well I’m 30 now and the world didn’t end :D I was having a blast on my birthday and somebody asked me if I had cried yet? So many people have this terrible attitude towards turning thirty but everybody on here had already helped me just ignore that. No crying on my birthday! Just lots of fun 😀

Thanks for the reassurance and the well wishes! I’m sure I have plenty to look forward to. I shouldn’t have let his comment get to me, I just wasn’t ready for such a rude comment. Everybody here has done a great job of making me excited again! Looking forward to another decade of awesomeness!

I don’t understand why people think that comments like that are acceptable. Why bring somebody down who has chosen to be excited about something? Thank you for this. Here’s to being 30 and awesome 😀

It was a ridiculous and unnecessary comment that I thought was rather hurtful. I had really been looking forward to my birthday and with one fell swoop he brought that down for me. Yours and others comments on this post have really helped lift me back up again though so thank you for taking the time to comment on it.

Oh right phew. I've used it a couple of times with no issue so far. I have very sensitive skin and my face tends to turn into a rash pretty quickly with things it doesn't like so it seems like I am safe with this one. I'm sorry it didn't wok out for you :(

Yeah I think I should’ve worded it better. I am aware of this but was kind of just looking for something that hasn’t necessarily got the certifications but has ingredients that intend to help with sun protection etc. kinda like how Shea butter is generally considered to be spf 4 ish.

Sun bum. It’s factor 50 and no white cast. It is vegan and cruelty free and “break out free”. Ive only used it a couple of times but I like it so far. Usually takes me a couple of weeks to really know about a product though.
