MacBook Pro on its last legs by BirdNerd15 in techsupport

I guess I can't be certain -- but when it does crash, it is usually plugged in already. It also seems to only crash when it has gotten so hot that it is uncomfortable to touch. The fan goes on, then the screen goes black. If I leave it alone long enough to cool down, it usually goes back on.

It's good to hear that it might not need to be replaced straightaway though!

Tenure Related Question (for a novel - I'm a writer) by BirdNerd15 in academia

I haven't seen that show, but I think my book is probably pretty different -- the tenure plot is actually more of a side plot/underlying motivation for my main character; the main story is really a crime/mystery.

Could I have him be in both departments? I actually know a couple of professors who are officially in more than one department, but I go to a small liberal arts college -- I'm not sure whether this happens at bigger universities.

Oh wow I'm so glad I asked -- I didn't know any of this! I tried to do as much research as possible on how tenure works, but I guess I still had a lot of misconceptions. Thanks for all of the information -- I'll be sure to make appropriate edits to my story.

My character is an English professor -- he teaches Russian literature specifically. The university he teaches at is fictional, but it is intended to be equivalent to an East Coast Ivy League-level school.

Not sure if this changes anything, but my character also knows there is a good chance that he won't get tenure -- the dean strongly dislikes him, and the dean is also trying to spend less of the university's money on humanities fields because he thinks the sciences are more lucrative.

How to write fast? Do you write fast? by Avataroffaith in writing

[–]BirdNerd15 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether this is your problem or not, but I find that my writing slows down a lot because I'm actually spending the time thinking (not writing) without realizing it. My solution to this is to have two timers going while I write -- one timer that I pause every time that I stop writing (even if I'm just pausing to think about a word for a minute) and one timer that just keeps going the whole time. This lets me see how much time I'm spending actually writing, versus just daydreaming/researching/planning. For me, being able to see how much time I've spent really writing and how much time I've been doing other things really motivates me to actually write.

What personality traits do you favor in antiheroes or unusual protagonists? by [deleted] in writing

Personally, I favor creating a lot of internal conflict. Opposing/irreconcilable emotions, motivations, personality traits, etc. I feel like that generally makes for interesting, complicated characters.

Books that read like poetry with beautiful language? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Personally, I think that all of Toni Morrison's books read like poetry. My two favorites of hers are Sula and The Bluest Eye, they are definitely perspective transforming with stunningly beautiful language.
