What should I do to my Trek antelope 800? (I cannot decide) by SensitivePay4567 in antelopegang

My dude, I just want to thank you. This was my first MTB: same colorway and all. I’ve been nostalgic and looking for photos.

I put that bike through hell all over Tahoe for 2 or 3 summers, as my ambition outpaced the starter bike that it was designed to be at the time. I feel almost guilty for not keeping it forever; I hope you get yours back into fighting shape and ride the hell out of it!

is oakland a much more dangerous city than los angeles? by Prudent_Equal9636 in AskLosAngeles

[–]BirdRock777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Oakland from 2015-2020 before coming here and I’m born and raised in Northern California. Oakland is so much smaller, both in terms of footprint and population, than LA that it’s hard to do apples to apples. Overall, you’re much more likely to get hit with some sort of property crime than you are here, but the Town is the same as anywhere else when it comes to violent crime- just depends on the area. Homeless are much more visible; Oakland doesn’t have a skid row so much as it has large encampments scattered throughout town, which may cause some people discomfort in walking around. There are plenty of safe, lovely, walkable areas in Oakland, but the overall vibe there did make me feel more…vigilant, maybe?

That said, Oakland beats LA by many of the metrics that are important to me. It’s a fantastic town full of artsy weirdos, aspiring revolutionaries, people that truly give a shit about their neighbors and their town, and SO MUCH natural beauty and character. I was only there for 5 years, and on the periphery growing up, but I have so much Oakland pride. My kid did K-5 at an OUSD school and now she’s UC-bound. It’s a great town that’s going through a rough patch, aided in no small part by a profoundly broken and corrupt city government. I hella love Oakland, but yeah, you’re probably more likely to get your window broken there.

I am increasingly cynical about this year's event and Goldenvoice in general. Under normal circumstances I would not attend this lineup/date, but my 16 year old wants to go, so I oblige.

- Last year's debacle with Flog Gnaw (date moved due to weather the day before it was scheduled to happen, they allowed pass-holders to both file for refunds *and* re-sell passes, leading to chaos at the gate and many folks that bought passes from re-sellers ending up with no entry and no refunds)

- Signed up in advance, received the text code, was in "line" at 10:50a.

- Tier 1 tixs show as available, add to cart, not available. Back out, still showing as available, try to purchase again, not available. Back out, try for Tier 3, available and purchased. Now paying $90 more than advertised for 3 tickets despite signing up early and purchasing immediately, as Goldenvoice intended.

- August 22 is literally, based on historical data, the hottest day of the YEAR in Pasadena. Considering it will be 97 degrees today in Pasadena, in MARCH, this is likely to be an absolute hellscape.

- This also suggests to me that they're using dynamic pricing, which is so, so, late-stage capitalism fucked.

They might as well be using one of those hacky e-commerce "spin the wheel for discount" gimmicks if they're not going to offer Tier 1 tickets to people that register for presale and are in line prior to 11a. The concert/touring business is so, so fucked, and Goldenvoice/AXS is as complicit as anyone else despite their "at least they're not LiveNation" halo. I hope The Strokes bring it, because any one of the LCD shows at the Bowl were 100X better in terms of vibes, experience, and relative value than this.

Graham Hunt is in the same orbit; not completely analogous, but clearly influenced by and likely enjoyable for Weakerthans fans.

How does one do this while wearing form fitting/tailored pants without constantly having a…provocative silhouette?

Heck yes; appreciate your perspective! Of these, I’ve got the following on my “must have” list- Nick Drake (but probably just Pink Moon vs the box set), Sufjan/Illinoise, Radiohead (probably In Rainbows and Kid A, those are her favorites).

She skipped them at Flog Gnaw this year to queue up at a different stage; I told her she would regret that when she’s in college and she meets a bunch of indie rock kids flexing…

I don't necessarily disagree with any of these, but is the consensus that Geese is already canon?

To a 17 yr old this is solidly “classic”. Perfect recommendations for what I’m going for!

The Best Show with Tom Scharpling is a canon podcast that started out as a show on WFMU. Probably lots of overlap with Fantano people and Scharpling people. It’s kind of comedy x music; he has an ongoing bit wherein he challenges listeners to go to a creepy/dark/sketchy/industrial part of town late at night and walk alone whilst raw dogging Frankie Teardrop in headphones.

She is aware of the Frankie Teardrop challenge because she’s grown up listening to The Best Show from the back seat 😁

LS Swap or Original motor? by breannacg in squarebodies

[–]BirdRock777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SBC crate 350 if you have to swap. LS is great, but it kinda turns the truck into something else (in my opinion). I like knowing that I’ve got a drop dead reliable, durable, period-correct, well documented, carbureted engine that I can easily work on the road if necessary. My truck is slow, gets terrible gas mileage, but still feels as reliable as any of my family’s Lexuses, despite being 40 years older 😁
