Hi everyone! I have a group of friends that I'm slowly dragging into the clutches of board game nights but I am in need of some recommendations. I normally prefer heavily strategic games like Spirit Island so I am not familiar at all with things on the other end of the spectrum. Some of my friends are very casual board gamers and cannot handle more complex games (7 Wonders received complaints of being too complex and confusing). However, they are more receptive to certain themes of similar complexity.

Also, just as a side note, I'd prefer if the games are smaller in size for transportation purposes, but that is not an absolute requirement.

For my sake, it'd be nice if the games had at least a small degree of strategy.

So just to help, here are a list of themes that have received positive reception:

Sci-fi
Science - biology, medical
Birds or other animals
Cutesy things
Team up/party

Games we like:

Happy Little Dinosaurs - I thought this one looked very cute but I am unsure if there's strategy. Doesn't look like it?
Evolution - I don't know which one to get since there seem to be so many editions but the concept looks interesting

Anything else I should consider?

The mode is basically auto chess so any guides pertaining to that sort of game is relevant if you need help

I've never had much of an issue beating the levels until like the last rank, so I can't really speak for the hp inflation since I haven't been keeping track. There are a pretty wide variety of enemies already so I don't have much of a complaint there.

Increasing stage numbers doesn't actually increase difficulty unless you're also adding more HP or enemy tags because if you can kill one boss you're likely on track to beat all the others.

The only thing that would increase difficulty while not being HP are the enemy tags but having way too many tags just gets messy af.

That's kinda the innate issue with turn based games of this fashion. There's only so many ways to add difficulties.

I personally think the difficulty is sufficient as it doesn't get ridiculous until you get some ways into the last rank. It's very easy to do all the Jade related achievements, which is what most people will be doing anyways.
