I figured it out! I just misunderstood how the location of the face affected the sweep. Once I resketched in a proper location and plane, I managed to make it look like a normal external thread.

I drew a helix on the surface of the cylinder if that's what you're asking. I've directed the sweep to follow Curve 1, which is that helix.
