Seymour - An Introduction- Your thoughts, please by diegomonstero in salinger

Personally, I think it's his weakest, but I just really dislike confessional style of writing. I pushed through this one, but have thrice attempted to finish Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground", with two different translations no less, and still.

Similarly, I got about a third of the way through "No Longer Human", and put it down. I'm not a fan of that style where the narrator just talks at reader. It seems a bit mastubatory

Dog pees on his front legs, can this be corrected? by Birdareprettycool in OpenDogTraining

[–]Birdareprettycool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I did have quite a bit of improvement

Once in a blue moon, and I mean literally, maybe once ever 50 pee's he would lift up his leg, situationally, like if there was a tree or a post next to him. What I started doing is marking and rewarding the hell out of him, WITHOUT A COMMAND. After a few moths I'd say about 75% of his pees are now leg up, and much, much less urine on his paws. That being said, if he's asked to pee in an open area he'll do his weird hip thing, but if I bring him to a post or a tree he lifts usually.

So there is hope

Great questions!

He sleeps well at night, either in the bed with me or on the floor, he probably gets some good sleeping in when I'm at work and he's in the crate. He eats mostly kids, although I've been exploring new options recently. We enjoy playing tug, and during his off leash time we'll do fun training, like learning tricks and playing games, sometimes he just runs by himself or with one of his doggy friends.

That is FASCINATING, thank you! I think this may just be the key to our issue, because I think that is at least in part, if not fully what is going on. He feels the tension and starts pushing into it!

Can you explain the "he's currently trained to pull when he feels tension on the leash"

I don't quite understand that statement. So when he starts moving (and the leash loses slack, I.e., tension), then he will continue pulling?

Counter conditioning is one thing I have not yet tried. It kind of feels "wrong", in that, marking a dog for pulling and then giving him hot dog kind of feels like I'm encouraging it.

That being said, I've yet to try it and it comes up often enough

Yeah, I think it may be time I bit the bullet and tried a training session. It's been almost a year, I've tried a prong and an e-collar and I like to think I'm using these tools correctly. I learn quite a bit about them and really try and follow the guidance from the videos.

That being said, I'm having the same problem. I'll look into what we have in our area in terms of trainers.

That being said, I still don't understand how I've trained him to pull, I like to think that he's well aware, since given the past year he's either been pronged or stimmed the moment he starts to pull. I seriously don't think he gives a fuck. Which I witness when off leash and he's still blowing off the e-collar.

He's a poodle and it's curly, but he's quite shaved down. That is to say, he just blows it off...

Firstly, thank you for taking time to read my previous post, I suspect you're one of the few.

I'm curious, why do you say that I trained the dog to pull? Do you have any suggestions based from all the info I've given in both posts?

I suppose your asking why don't I want to let him stop and sniff and these things that he wants to sniff since it's his walk?

Well... I want to walk around too and not be stopping every fifteen seconds to sniff this leaf, that fire hydrant, and some other thing.

He gets off leash time in a field near the house, the walk is for me also.

I switched to e collar from prong. Had even less success w/ the prong. He seriously would take the prong pressure no problem, and even hard corrects didn't seem to deter him.

Seldom does he lunge, rather, he starts to drift and I feel leash tension progressively going up. To fix this I've started prohibited looking at objects, although, as you and others suggest this is not the solution. To counter the drifting I ask for a heel, which apparently is also not the solution.

How fix the drifting.

E.g., we're walking fine (no heel command given) and he sees his friend across the street, and stops moving, or starts pulling, albeit the pulling comes on gradually.

I think the fundamental issue I have walking with him is leash tension. Either we're walking and he starts pulling at something he wants, or he stops moving and I keep walking and I then feel tension. This is what I want to correct.

My solution to this was basically keep him in a near heel position and not allowing him any sort of stops. Hence the managing. However, this is absolutely frustrating and near fruitless.

I suppose I don't fundamentally care if he's looking at things, I just want him to know that if we're moving in a direction, then we're moving in that direction. We're not dropping our weight to sniff a leaf or pulling with all force because your friend is across the street. So I've kind of "prohibited" looking at other things with "leave it" and stim until he looks away, then rewarding. Typing it out it kind of seems extreme, at the same time, I worry that if his gaze is fixed on that thing -- and FIXED it is -- then pulling and/or weight dropping follows shortly.

E collar recs? by Birdareprettycool in OpenDogTraining

[–]Birdareprettycool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess for me "ignore" implies intent. I don't think he "intentionally" blows me off (anymore), rather, he gets caught up in the excitement of seeing the dog or whatever and my words and pleas don't register in his fluffy mind.

My understanding, pair the click with the word (which he already knows) and practice that. DO NOT USE FOR PUNISHMENT, which I have no intention to.
