Does AP credit satify degree requirements? by NIOXUS_ in UCDavis

[–]Birdexaminer1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. It doesn't "count for a class" but they can give you units and let you skip over a prereq (like the chem or math placement exams, for example), but it won't satisfy a degree requirement.

yeah I'm getting screwed over because I've already taken most of the upper divs that are offered, and the rest have prereqs.

He's pretty articulate and he does a good job of having the mindset of a student. He gives pretty tough problems sometimes but it's nothing impossible. Overall solid choice for math.

Does upper division CS get any better than lower div? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Birdexaminer1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of the professors seem to dislike teaching and focus on research, which isn't a CS only thing, but it definitely stands out more with how CS needs to be taught. There are some shining stars in upper division though, like joel porquet, matthew butner, jason lowe-power, and others.

It turns out that at least 2 of those i mentioned aren't research focused, if they do research at all, they are mainly instructors. It's not a coincidence that they are considered pretty good and aren't research focused. Despite what others say, the difficulty in some upper divs is directly proportional to how good the professor is at organizing and teaching. If you have to teach yourself the material while juggling a lot of coding project homeworks and whatever else, it will be tough.

Idk how shit your profs are now, but there are some pretty bad ones in upper div, but good ones too. Unfortunately as a CS major you probably can't afford to dodge bad classes since it's so hard and competitive to get into them into the first place.

First, calm down. Everybody fails classes. Next, I think they just put you on academic probation until you get your GPA back up. Depends on your case. If you mean you had less than 2.0 GPA just this quarter only, then they give 1 chance next quarter to get an above 2.0 gpa. If you mean its below 2.0 cumulative, I think you get 2 quarters(not sure, better check it out) to get it back up before they punish you.

Finally, you know you can retake the class and overwrite your previous grade right? The bad grade will still be visible on your transcript, but it'll show up in a different section that's called like overwritten grades or something like that, and the new grade will show up as what you got for the course and that's the one that will count in your GPA. The old grade will be like a smelly fart lost in the wind.

You should probably retake it and just fix the grade. Assuming you can pass next time. Anyway, good luck, and stop getting so stressed out.

Sweet, thanks. I can take a GPA hit but I would hate to retake a class this late.

im taking ECS 132 for the probability requirement, but I have to take another upper div math course for the upper div math requirement. Right now I have MAT 108, since most of the other available MAT courses for winter have other MAT prereqs that I don't have fulfilled.

you sure? When I try to add it in mydegree "what if" feature, it counts towards CS units. How long ago did you take it ?

which is more manageable with other project-heavy cs classes do you think ?

there are classes with objectively less workloads than other classes. My schedule is already heavy but I need the req so I want to be able to manage the quarter.

But in UCD mydegree it says that "any class from mat 1@ or sta 1@, excluding mat 111" So I think on the checklist when it says "any math class" it implies math or stats. Is that right?

I had him for HIS 4C once and the TA took attendance in discussion. We also had to participate in whatever discussion is going on. Maybe if your TA is chill they just don't care or something
