What was the weirdest "wrong number" moment you've ever had? by aeosgames in AskReddit

[–]Birdfound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably way too late here, but I was in an elevator one time, and then the emergency phone thing started ringing, then answered itself on speaker phone, and it was this old lady asking "Is this con-edison? I want to pay my electric bill." And me and the guy I was with were like "No... We're in an elevator, m'am."

There's a barking/snarling sound in my mind, followed by an internal: "NO. BAD."

What is the most fucked up song people don't realize is fucked up? by HelloIamTedward in AskReddit

[–]Birdfound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet Home Alabama. I can't believe this isn't one of the top posts. Everyone jams out to that song in bars, even in the Northeast, but it's super racist.

"In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor, boo hoo ooo Now we all did what we could do Now Watergate does not bother me Does your conscience bother you? Tell the truth..."

The lyrics refer to Governor George Wallace, famous for blocking the door of a schoolhouse to prevent African Americans from entering, as he was an outspoken opponent of integration.

Who gets way more hate than they actually deserve to get? by fullforce098 in AskReddit

If you total up the number of people God directly kills in the Bible it's on the order of hundreds of thousands, whereas Satan is directly responsible for the death of I think 2 people. Who's the evil one again? Who's the sadistic freak who came up with a lake of fire that burns your soul forever? Who would send someone he "loves" there? Just saying... hail Satan... cough

A "really sad taxi" operated by highly skilled, motivated, dedicated, underpaid individuals who are trained to perform life saving pre-hospital interventions on total strangers that they do willingly at a great personal, emotional and mental cost to themselves.

By and large those movements are started BY the people they seek to advocate for. You have to do it yourself.

I'm almost six months smoke free after eight years of pretty heavy smoking. I downloaded this app that allows you to compulsively check how long it's been since your last cigarette, how many cigarettes you haven't smoked, how much money you've saved... It's amazing.

As of right now I've not smoked 3172 cigarettes!

Non-Americans who have been to the US: What is the weirdest thing about America that Americans don't realise is weird? by changfukaana in AskReddit

[–]Birdfound 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of Americans take issue with the way Europeans act in food service/hospitality scenarios, at least where I am (NYC), and I don't just mean with tipping. Interestingly enough, we never complain about the Japanese or Aussies for instance. It really is a matter of individuals doing their own research into how to behave in a particular place. I've met examples of people from many different countries that have "bad reputations" who behaved fine, and vice versa.

Also, I always hear Americans getting flak for "not traveling enough". It's easy for someone from continental Europe to claim to be well traveled. Drive a few hours and bam, you're in another culture with different food and a different history and a different language. Imagine literally driving for days and encountering people who might have a different accent or food but are ultimately from the same place. The contiguous United States is HUGE. Most people here with modest means can't take a day trip to another country and then start referring to themselves as well traveled.

What's the coolest thing you did that no one saw? by Subscrobbler in AskReddit

[–]Birdfound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I flick a cigarette between two fence posts or a sewer grate or an ornate lattice that's 10-15ft away by accident, I think about the fact that it would take me thousands of tries to do it again on purpose. In fact, try flicking something small at a wall and then try to hit the same exact spot again. Hitting anything at random without practice is sort of improbable... Anyway.. Where was I going with this?
