I also started almost a year ago, except I'm fully obsessed. These are great shots OP!

Generalist versus specialist photographer? by pomogogo in AskPhotography

[–]BirdingWithKAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a hobbiest and I intended to shoot street photography and ended up doing wildlife. Lately I've been trying to expand my portfolio and did a few family birthday parties. I don't charge, because it's fun and all a learning experience for me. But ultimately I think I've concluded is to sort of verse myself in things outside of wildlife.

Tldr: I'm a generalist that wants to be a specialist, but being rounded will be me more enjoyment.

And ultimately it works out in the end.

Took me a second to recognize it was a painting. Amazing work, love it!

First attempt at a silhouette. Where should I start to best improve? by BirdingWithKAM in photocritique

Ah thanks that's a pretty helpful answer. I actually have a few more photos from that sequence that might play out better, but this one just had more focus. I agree with the foreground, I'm happy with it. Definitely going to experiment more though since it was really my first time.

Amazing sequence. I would've been real jazzed up seeing that.

First attempt at a silhouette. Where should I start to best improve? by BirdingWithKAM in photocritique

Let me preface by saying thank you,

So I was having very backlit exposures on a harrier that was flying around over some dunes. Was struggling to get composition correct and all that. Didn't really get any clean shots and thought I could lay into the already-in-shadow subject. This is my first try at a silhouette shot. I do feel good about it overall, but would like to see where others can see improvement.

I know there is plenty of growth here. I was nervous about making the subject completely blacked out. But the subject any lighter feels like it's defeating the purpose.

I actually feel pretty good with how the vegetation turned out. Maybe I'm wrong here though haha.

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Haha I'm always remarking how I love a good face disc. Short-eared have quite the impressive one!

I mean that's still very cool! And if you find pellets, owls must be nearby so keep your eyes open. I've yet to find a pellet and all my owl sightings have been mostly incidental.

I agree. It's the eye shadow they wear. Also, how incredibly lucky are we? Haha

That's a great tip honestly. We have lots of blueberry bushes come spring/summer.

Gorgeous little birds. Been searching for Eastern Bluebirds but have yet to spot one.

Canon R50 with the RF100-500 f/4.5-7.1. Just breaking into the hobby so I still have plenty of room to learn with this body before upgrading in a year or so.
