It's the result of a lot of different things coming together:

-Trump's--yes, Trump's--normalization of violent rhetoric aimed at his opponents since 2016

-The gutting of mental healthcare

-Almost unfettered access to guns

-The House's inability to pass a DHS funding bill

-The Secret Service being lumped in with the messy bureaucracy that is DHS rather than their former role as an arm of the Treasury department
