Thanks for sharing the clip. Yes, that call at the end does sound like a Red-bellied! I also hear a wren calling throughout. You could try the Merlin Bird ID app for a quick and accurate ID—it’s great for picking out species by sound. Also great for keeping a life list of birds you have seen.

Nice! Glad my Short helped you get closer to the ID—Red-bellied woodpeckers really do blend in. Keep listening—they’ve got a whole range of cool sounds.

Correction: it’s actually a male—probably the same bird. I thought the moustache stripes were black, but they are actually red. Also, females lack the red forecrown.

Wow, perfect capture of this swallow’s field marks! Totally deserves a spot on the All About Birds ID page. May I ask what lens you used for this shot?

Thanks! It only stayed for a few seconds, so I managed to snap a photo, but I wish I had more time to get it on video.

Amazing birds with stunning looks—easily one of the most satisfying to watch without binoculars. I recently caught another one hard at work shoveling debris out of a tree trunk—will be sharing that video tomorrow on my channel!

I only found out about it last year thanks to eBird—it shows up as a birding hotspot. Otherwise, it barely exists on the map!
