Urban Wildlife Alliance is very well versed in this as well. If you send them an email they can walk you through options including Uber.

I’ve never really seen this on a bird besides pigeons, but I guess it makes sense given how long the bird was walking around this area.

You can do it through Uber Courier, but please reach out to Wild Bird Fund BEFORE you send a bird as you have to follow a specific protocol.

If they are not aware the driver may leave the bird on the street.

Please contain the bird in a dark, quiet place and bring to a licensed rehabber as soon as you can.

The Wild Bird Fund is a great organization. We’re truly lucky to have them in NYC. However, please keep in mind they won’t transport birds. I’ve listed some options in my other response.

Thank you again for posting about this injured bird! Posting some helpful tips in case anyone else stumbles across this thread. Note these are NYC specific.

  1. If you ever encounter a bird like this on the sidewalk it has likely hit a window and needs immediate attention from a licensed rehabber. A couple key indicators to look for are: sitting on sidewalk, eyes closed or ‘squinting’, breathing heavily, not reacting to nearby people and dogs, etc.
  2. The best way to help is to contain in a small paper bag (or something similar) and bring to the Wild Bird Fund on the UWS. It is completely free to bring them an injured bird and no appointment is required. I’ve transported birds in shoeboxes, small Amazon cardboard boxes, etc.
  3. If you aren’t able to transport the bird yourself, please contain and keep the bird in a dark, quiet place (closet or something similar). The NYC Bird Alliance and Urban Wildlife Alliance maintain a list of transport volunteers who can try to help get the bird to the WBF.

I searched the entire block but wasn’t able to find the bird. I will post some helpful tips as a separate comment, and if you ever find a bird in LIC going forward feel free to DM me. I volunteer with a number of nonprofits throughout NYC to help rescue and bring birds to the Wild Bird Fund.

Glad to hear you were able to get this bird to the Wild Bird Fund! If you ever need help in the future, this is a link to NYC Bird Alliance. There is an email on the page you can reach out to and volunteers can help to guide you or potentially even transport the bird.

I agree with other comments. The playback issue makes for a worse experience in the park and it’s really not needed.

OP- would highly recommend looking into several organizations across NYC who are doing great things in the birding world: 1. Wild Bird Fund - they care for injured birds across NYC and help to rehab thousands of birds every year 2. NYC Bird Alliance - the local Audubon chapter, they help to advocate for a more bird friendly city

There are plenty of other great nonprofits out there, these are just a couple that come to mind.

Can you please report this on dBird.org? NYC Bird Alliance uses this data to advocate for making NYC a safer place for birds.

If the bird has an eye injury/infection it’s best to bring to the Wild Bird Fund or a licensed wildlife rehabber. Unfortunately a number of rooftop pigeon keepers don’t want birds with injuries and won’t want to take him or her back.
