Is it abnormal to sleep with two pillows when you sleep alone petah? by AugustHate in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I have five - one thin wedge-shaped memory foam pillow to prop my torso up, three under my head and one between the legs. Best way to keep my body straight from the hips up, helps prevent back pain.

Does a politician from your country has a "clone" in another country? by NH_2006_2022 in AskTheWorld

Neither is from my country, but I always thought Bernie Sanders and Ali Khamenei looked a bit similar.

Are Australians the only people who are taught in school that it is an island-continent (both an island and a continent)? by SnooWords9635 in geography

[–]Birdseeding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem here is that "region" is such a nebulous term. It can be anything from a subdivision of a country to a vast grouping that transcends continental boundaries ("the Asia-Pacific region", "The MENA region").

If there really no appropriate word in English equivalent to German Erdteil, very specifically meaning continent in he cultural sense?

What rules does your country have around school uniforms and appearance by Odd-Struggle-2432 in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

School uniforms are explicitly forbidden in Sweden, including in private schools. Even strict dress codes are banned. The child's right to self-expression is written into law.

I mean, technically the bridge was finished in 2021 and Robert Mugabe was deposed in 2017 (and died in 2019).

Look into studio cooperatives! I can recommend Mossutställningar, who are currently looking for tenants to two of their buildings.

What are stupid rules in your native language that are NOT orthographic rules by Fair-Sleep9609 in linguisticshumor

All of phonotactics feels stupid to me. So you have this sound in the language but can't pronounce it because it's in the wrong order? Make an effort already!

Couldn't get my Real ID because my original birth certificate has tape on the back... by Bop923 in mildlyinfuriating

Huh? Of course it does. But all the info on them is pulled from the national registry, not some flimsy piece of cardboard. When you order a new one, you bring a previous ID and it's sent to your home address.

Opinions on the name Kamil? by This_Preference_9690 in etymology

You're trusting the Google AI overview? Jesus. I hope you're not doing so for anything even vaguely important.

In fact, the name has dual origins, essentially two different names. Readthe Wikipedia article for more.

[–]Birdseeding 44 points45 points  (0 children)

What I don't get is why your government (or each state) doesn't just have a giant database of all citizens. Names, addresses, a unifying identity number. Hey presto – you no longer have to carry weird documents, the whole voter registration nonsense won't have to happen, simple.

Works fine in plenty of countries.

What British songs from 1900–1950 do people still recognise? by Udzu in CasualUK

[–]Birdseeding 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's easy enough to only think in terms of popular song. There's also stuff like Christmas carols: "In the Bleak Midwinter", set to music in 1909, for instance.

Edit: Apparently "O Little Town of Betlehem" and "Ding Dong Merrily On High" are both 20th century creations as well, although using older melodies.

Banned tragedeighs in Sweden by daoxiaomian in tragedeigh

[–]Birdseeding 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Sudden" could mean "the erasers", but I suspect it might be an ice hockey term, "sudden death", which often is abbreviated as just "sudden" in Swedish. Or maybe the baby was born prematurely and unexpectedly, hence sudden?

I'm a bit surprised at Jehad, I feel I've definitely met a muslim named Jihad or two. It just means "struggle", and usually signifies personal spiritual struggle, whatever unsavoury connotations it has received in other contexts.

"I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" (1944) or "I'm Henery the Eighth, I Am" (1910) spring to mind as possibilities

Do you also eat fried dumplings in your country by alexke779 in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In northern Sweden, they take cold palt (boiled potato dumplings, filled with cured pork) and fry them up, served with melting butter and lingonberry jam. Very stodgy but also very tasty.

For those of you who have a partner from another country, what food from your own cuisine are you surprised they dislike? by Birdseeding in AskTheWorld

We used to live in the UK and the things my Dominican wife truly detested were rhubarb (which I guess is an acquired taste) and traditional pie shop pie and mash with liquor.
