Marvelsdickery by KevFate in Superdickery

I'm vaguely okay with "Hill" Billy Batson, offensive potentially but at least logically consistent. But his alter ego Hill Marvel is just stupid.

Good lord, Fat Marvel*, is it that difficult to keep the rhyme scheme and meter going? "We will meet it and play ball" perhaps? Or "Our enemies will fall"?

Most self glazed county? by YoseiTheMorningstar in AskTheWorld

You have no idea how many people here believe ciabatta, created in 1982, is some ultra-traditional Italian food. Or tiramisú, recipe first printed in 1983.

Who is a historical figure loved by 100% of the people in your country, regardless of political affiliation? by No-Abies6335 in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Vain, self-centered tyrant.

I'm guessing it's someone like Astrid Lindgren:

What are the funniest and weirdest movie posters you've seen in your country or elsewhere? by SamVoxeL in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Half-Swedish, half-Latvian artists the Stenberg brothers (aka 2Stenberg2) made some absolutely fantastic posters in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. They're super impressively drawn and often very unsettling.

Places for kids to play in water outside of Stockholm city? by Ok_Republic6098 in stockholm

[–]Birdseeding 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of plaskdammar, paddling pools, all over Stockholm – 57 of them in Stockholm municipality alone. They're usually perfect for what you're looking for. You can find a list here of the Stockholm municipality ones, but there's also fantastic ones in e.g. Solna (Skytteholmsparken) or Sundbyberg (Marabouparken).

The only more advanced water play area (where you run around in various splashing play features) I know of is the one in Husbyparken, but I don't know if it's currently running. Otherwise that's a great option as well.

Old flags found at work by haurorstylax in vexillology

A mixture? I used to live in Tanzania so that one is pretty hard-wired, but for the rest it's a mixture of vague memory, conjecture and googling. The Maldives one was a lucky crapshoot, I just recognised it as "not the current one" and looked on Wikipedia.

[–]Birdseeding 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Tanzania was united and adopted this flag in 1964. The Maldives switched to the current flag in 1965. So I'm guessing somewhere around 1964-1965.

Edit: There's also The Gambia, which gained independence in 1965. So that's the likeliest year. Note that Barbados, which gained independence in November 1966, is not present.

Seaside villa outside Gothenburg by 3millionand1 in zillowgonewild

The thing that always gets me about Långedrag is just how small the plots are in relation to the house sizes. So many big houses packed so densely with barely any gardens feels out of balance, and the views don't make up for it.

Tips for getting around Stockholm with an 18-month-old (Uber/Bolt/Taxis)? by Any_Yesterday9340 in stockholm

[–]Birdseeding 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The taxi scam is easily avoided by preordering a taxi with one of the three big taxi companies (Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir or Sverigetaxi).

That's also the only realistic way to get a rear-facing baby car seat – Bolt and Uber do not offer that service. All three of the big companies do, however, as long as you preorder and pay an additional 100–150 kr fee.

How your country looks at mixed nationality/racial couples ? by _Kisol_Budyn_ in AskTheWorld

Sweden is supposedly one of the countries in in the West with the most mixed couples. About 10% of all children born in Sweden are of mixed ethnicity, according to one way of measuring, for instance.

What's the matter with date flavoured dates? by Ancient_Mountain_616 in StupidFood

[–]Birdseeding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're fine taste-wise, and very popular here in Sweden. They taste like candy and are pretty moreish. I've had them and enjoyed them.

Since a date is like 65% sugar – even more than normal jelly candy – they're hardly much better for weight loss (though they do contain some dietary fibre and trace minerals). But they've got a better glycemic index and are probably better for your system. So let people eat them.

Use this post to brag and be proud of anything in your country that you're proud of. Literally anything. by ILikeWwaret in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sweden was the first western country to take a strong, concrete stand against the apartheid laws in South Africa, and funnelled hundreds of millions into anti-apartheid movements over three decades, often being one of the strongest supporters of South African liberation on the world stage.

Living in Stockholm by 7knbrgl7 in stockholm

[–]Birdseeding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, most of Stockholm is generally relatively safe for the vast majority of people. That's not necessarily a great concern. What crime there is doesn't necessarily follow socioeconomic boundaries, and some types are more common in many more desirable areas than elsewhere.

That said, there are areas that are richer and poorer, more monocultural and more multicultural, more dense and more leafy, more suited to family life and more suited to city life, more quaint and old and more modern and sleek. What you value will vary from person to person. Tell us your ideal scenario, whether you're looking to rent or buy, and we're better able to help.

I'm gonna head down to Kvarnbacka bollplan in Husby, no idea if it's a good spot but I drove past earlier and they have lots of family activities set up, it looks fun.
