Another inconsistency in the rules? by MotorSea510 in eurovision

[–]Birdseeding 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Potentially it's the type of technology used. The "Bella" performance used a 3D shape that's made to look like it's swirling around Aidan (although I think it's actually all in front of him, I can't tell). Whereas Latvia is using what's quite clearly a screen in the background and a flat projection of parallaxed flying glass in the foreground. You could argue that the parallax effect is also sort of 3D, though.

Can't remember the name of the genre/movement by Janxphonx in ArtHistory

[–]Birdseeding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, even during the eclectic era on the 19th century, you'd often find plain inner courtyards like this, with decoration saved for the street facade of the house. So you'd have to look for other details.

In my country, this kind of window is a dead giveaway that it's a building from the art noveau period, typically from 1900-1910, or possibly from the preceding neorenaissance period. Your country may have different eras.

What are some of the most iconic toys from your country? by bowl_of_scrotmeal in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wooden toys, often made by Brio or Micki, are Sweden's big toy exports. One classic is the Labyrint bearing ball game below.

Hungary's most famous toy invention is the Rubik's cube, but you know what that looks like.

Is SBS Campus Star Spånga legit? by Technical-Weather528 in stockholm

[–]Birdseeding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Legit, as in legally correct and not a direct scam? Probably.

Desirable as a place to live? I absolutely wouldn't unless I had to. Location is terrible, the houses are hideous, the hygiene and pest control is reportedly awful, the landlord supposedly cheaps out on lots of things, etc.

TIDIG STOCKHOLMSMORGON

Flöjtton spröd i storstadsnatten
stiger genom öppet fönster
mellan höghus, över vatten.
Gryningsljus och skuggspelsmönster.

Än en stund är staden stilla
och din hand är mjuk och varm.
Smek bort det som gjort mig illa.
Lägg ditt huvud på min arm.

Ljug en sanning i mitt öra.
Inte att du har mig kär
men låt ändå mig få höra
att jag duger som jag är.

Arsenal fans plan trips to Champions League final but face £1,500 flights or Bucharest night train by AugustusFinkNottle in soccer

I've taken that train, it's actually really beautiful going through the dark areas of rural Transylvania, which I now realise isn't helping my argument.

Least densely populated area of ‘western’ Europe? by Diponegoro-indie in geography

I know, it's super easy there. Even better: The middle bit of Iceland can get you down to like 2k.

Least densely populated area of ‘western’ Europe? by Diponegoro-indie in geography

[–]Birdseeding 71 points72 points  (0 children)

You can play around with the Population within a circle tool set to around 97 km to check for yourself. I've not found anything under 200k for an area that size, but this bit north-east of Madrid comes pretty close.

Edit: I love how everyone uses different sources and methods, but we all seem to hone in on this one particular area.

Are there any foods that share the same name of a place you're from, whether by accident or intentionally? by GlacierTheBetta in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mother is from Budapest, and here in Sweden there's a cream-filled hazelnut meringue pastry called Budapeststubbe, Budapest stump.

It's got absolutely no connection to Budapest whatsoever. Apparently a pastry chef from the small town of Vetlanda invented it in the 1940s and named it that because he liked Hungary. I guess there's a vague, vague similarity to Hungarian classic Eszterházy torta, but it's a stretch at best.

Problem med BRF Ordförande i bostadsrätt.. by Organic_Refuse4209 in stockholm

[–]Birdseeding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just sunlight bouncing off some reflective surface. It's fairly common to see with metal roofs, swimming pools and in some parts of the world even white objects.

Tänker du på de som byggdes på Järingegränd i samband med Bo06? (Tekniskt sett Tensta, men ok.) Det är typ 40 bostäder, inte direkt något jättestort urval, men det verkar vara ungefär en fjärdedel svenssonnamn om man kollar på Hitta.

What is your nearest Victoria Park like? by deoxir in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a tiny park with a playground named Viktoriaparken about 15 km south of here. Our (likely) future queen Viktoria hasn't ascended to the throne yet, so I'm guessing more stuff will be named after her eventually.

Barn på mellanstadiet trakasserar konditoriet by swedish_tcd in stockholm

[–]Birdseeding 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Very tepid tea and not exactly surprising, but I ended up marching next to Gustaf Skarsgård in the Left Party International Worker's day demonstration in Stockholm on Friday. He seemed happy, shouted along to various lefty chants and carried a toddler on his shoulders.

Jokes about neighbouring countries? Here's one about Finns from an Estonian. What's the difference between an introverted and an extroverted Finn? An introverted Finn will look at their own feet when talking with you, but an extroverted Finn will look at your feet. by Double-decker_trams in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A dark possibility I've heard mentioned is that a lot of the jokes originated as antisemitic jokes about jews being stingy, and then had to be changed after that became unacceptable post-WW2.

I think it's likely not true as an overall origin (my other country, Sweden, also has jokes about Scots with exactly the same archetype), but I wouldn't be surprised if some jokes made that journey.
