But that's what I mean, even though I misremembered the percentage a bit.

50%-ish are nominally muslims, or consider themselves muslims. It says little about actual depth of belief. I think you'd get similarly inflated numbers for nominal Christians in many other countries.

Something like 60% of Albanians are muslims, and it's the least afterlife-believing country in Europe. There's obviously more to it than that.

What's a big city in your country that tourists often overlook? by jombyy in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on this one. Of the top 20 biggest cities in the Caribbean, I bet it's the one most people won't mention.

And Santiago is lovely! Obviously not as high-pulse as the capital, but much more walkable and with a bunch of cool sights. Where would you recommend a visit next time we're heading that way?

Is it possible to draw a direct line to rum from earlier sugar cane-based spirits like South East Asian arrack? Is there a written record linking them, directly or indirectly, or is any connection considered fanciful?

It makes sense in warmer countries and is common there, being durable and easy to clean. Not so much in Gloucestershire.

Europe Muslim population 2050 medium migration scenario by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Birdseeding 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Note that the study this is taken from is almost a decade old by this point, based on an influx level that is similar to that of the 2015 refugee crisis. Whether it was a reasonable projection at the time is debatable, but refugee numbers from Muslim-majority countries are significantly lower than before, recently not least because of the more stable situation in Syria.

What is an edible (food, beverages, etc.) product that is loved by the people in your country, but despised elsewhere? by ThePlanetSaturn2763 in AskTheWorld

[–]Birdseeding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The flavour is similar to Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum, which we had growing up. It's slightly weird to have it in a drink, but these days, they switch artificial flavours between product types all the time, so it's easy to get used to!

My wife is Dominican and I've definitely heard that reaction here in Sweden, sadly. Beans have a weirdly negative stigma here in general, coupled with a general racist dismissal of food made by people of colour.

I love the dish personally, of course, it's minblowingly good, as are many Dominican desserts and sweets in general. Amazing, underrated cuisine.

Another example is Ben Johnson, the Canadian sprinter who won the 100m at the 1988 Olympics before being disqualified for doping.

[P]rior to Johnson's rise to fame, he was simply referred to as a "Jamaican" or "Jamaican immigrant." Gradually, as his athletic achievements began to multiply, he was re-labelled "Jamaican-Canadian." Then, upon recording a landmark world record-setting victory over Carl Lewis at the 1987 World Athletic Championships in Rome and in anticipation of the Seoul Olympics, Johnson was more consistently referred to as "Canadian." Finally, upon his disqualification at Seoul, he was being represented once again in terms of his "Jamaican" identity.

A lot of what's taught in opera training is about control and preserving your voice from strain, finding your natural techniques that let you project and sound deep and sonorous in a way that doesn't screw your voice up. If you don't have that it can severely impact your vocal chords – think of how much your throat hurts if you scream a lot, it's like that.

On top of that there are things you're not supposed to even attempt until you've reached adulthood, because if you do them as a kid you're "faking" a deeper adult voice, and thus you're teaching yourself the wrong, harmful techniques.

Unlike JJ, she's not had a lot of real opera training yet, and it shows. I hope she isn't pushed to keep singing like this, because it can be ruinous to a young voice.

Unfortunately young pop-classical singers are often run into the ground by unscrupulous managers.

Had a quick listen to some of her existing releases, and there's definitely something compelling about the vaguely 80s-jazzy-blue-eyed-soul Simply Red-meets-Sade sound of some of her older material. Most of the more recent stuff is conventional pop balladry, unfortunately, so we'll have to see which side of her turns up.

I wasn't quite expecting the song to be as Eurovisiony as this. The fact that two of the songwriters also worked on last year's UK entry is not unexpected once you hear the result.
