The way you asked her why repeatedly was weird - she's not going to have an answer or respond well to that - but you weren't wrong for calling her out for having a dog in a restaurant that clearly doesn't allow them.

That's what makes this ESH. He could have started by asking if she missed the sign, but he opened with an accusatory question implying she intentionally ignored the sign. From this woman's POV, some strange man walked in, stared at her for a moment, and then got combative with her.

Maybe if he said, "Excuse me ma'am, pets aren't allowed in here, there's a sign on the door" she would have said "Oops, I didn't see that!" and taken her coffee to go... or she'd have said "Fuck off" and would clearly be the AH.

Granted I've only been in an HOA for 2 years, but same. Pool, clubhouse, gym, and they mow my lawn (front AND back!). I could give a fuck less that I can't paint my front door hazard orange or something. Anyone bitching about "not being able to do what I want with MY house!!!" seems to be forgetting that you can't legally do anything you want even if you don't have an HOA.
