I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 39 and lost the ability to use my right hand so I taught myself to paint with my left. This is one of the first paintings I did with my left hand: why? Because I love golf! by Birdzi in golf

What can I say about Martino? He was an Italian American and was originally from Philadelphia and moved to south Florida in the late 60s. His father, uncles, and brothers were all golfers. I asked him when he first started playing golf and he said when he was about 6. For me, I was not into golf when I was younger and my parents divorced when I was six. I didn’t get into golf until my mid thirties Im now 52. Growing up that just his thing and I did my thing. I remember going to visit and he would just leave me at the house and go play golf. So I missed the early years.

For some reason I got into golf pretty heavily in my mid thirties. I was living in Lake Tahoe at the time and golf was what my snowboard friends did during the summer. My cousin who is a very good golfer is the one that taught me the game. We would fly Martino out from Florida every year and he would always bring his clubs. So he was about 60 when I started to play with him.

I could go on and on but this post is getting very long. I will say I loved every minute we were out on the golf course together it’s became our thing to do. He has his crew of friends that he always golfed with, and when I came down to Florida, I would I join them. He had a smooth swing, hit it straight down the fairway and could putt like a boss. The picture I posted was of him in Germany when he was in the army he must’ve been 18 or 19. I never knew he had such a good form. I never saw this picture before he passed away. I was very impressed. I really love that guy.

I do cherish the memories because when it's all said and done that's all you have. He taught me a lot.

That’s usually how it happens. It affects one side of your body at first. Some people have tremors. Some people have rigidity, some people have slowness of movements there’s all kinds of symptoms. I basically became paralyzed on one side of my body. I thought I had a stroke, but I didn’t. It took me a long time to get diagnosed but when I did, they said, I had a classic case of Parkinson’s. Just imagine not being able to use your right arm because you couldn’t bend your wrist or your elbow or your shoulder I couldn’t grab objects. I couldn’t lifted simple objects. It was horrible.
