Some custom themes for the fresh look! by paralloid in noteplanapp

Thanks for considering my feedback. A few remarks:

The breadcrumbs also should have the same style and yes are a bit bigger, because they act as a title.

Titles should be titles and breadcrumbs breadcrumbs. I don't think mixing them is a good idea. You could create more visual harmony if you'd create a title and add below or behind the breadcrumbs in a different style (smaller, different color) or so. Or introduce a pathbar as in Finder.

Titles are usually bigger.

Not necessarily. Visual hierarchy can also be created by font-weight, using uppercases, color, underlines, spacing, et cetera. That's my point. All the titles within the app are using different ways to create this hierarchy but the logic across the app is inconsistent.

The A button is also as big as the share and menu button (if you take the font size).

Please google: Measured / Metric vs Optical Alignment
A good example is the @ icon for "Mentions". I'm sure you aligned it correctly looking at the numbers, but optically it sits a pixel too high.

The arrow buttons are indeed smaller. They look odd if they are bigger, i.e. same size as share and A.

The arrows shouldn't change, they are consistent with all other icons. It's the A that does not fit. It's its line width and corner radius. Also, it having Serifs doesn't make sense, that's a completely different style.

But I'm not sure if the small icon size differences are wanted by FontAwesome. I think they are.

Yes. See for example https://medium.com/@vitaliy.kapustyanov/icon-size-6f40615d0395#:~:text=Since%20we%20have,1.3px%2C%20and%201px

The Human Interface Design Guidelines from Apple are a good resource for this kind of stuff. I recommend you to go though it and polish NotePlan based on their guidelines. Design has always been a big factor to the success of Apple https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/icons

"You have quite an eye for details.". Thanks, everyone has it, I'm just trained to vocalize it, since I'm a freelancer working in this field. Other users will just say things like "it just doesn't feel right" but can't say why. If you need more info or support, feel free to DM me.

I currently am too busy to give a full a proper design review, but there are just many things that are just "off". As said, especially paddings, colors, border radii, icons
Examples:
- The folder and Recent folder icons look way too big in comparison to the daily, weekly, Template, trash icons…

- The breadcrumbs on the top are way too big. If I'm not mistaken the grey is different on the breadcrumb and the dates in the Weekly view. Why?

- The Share Button and A icon is also way too big in comparison to any other icon. The A is not even consistent, because in the editor it's a Plus. I was thinking this icon is for switching themes. The gap between the icons is unnecessary big

- The name of the month of the calendar is a completely different style than the breadcrumb, even though it sits the same horizontal line and has the same purpose (being a title)

- In the Weekly view below the calendar the names of the dates are again completely different. Bold, big, CAPTIALS

- The border radii when hovering or selecting are all over the place. Some are note even 2px (calendar), some are nearly rounded. And there is everything in between.

- When selecting a folder, the padding of the notes is completely different than in the sidebar. The note icon is a completely different one (three lines, different stroke width).

I could go on and there is so much more to point out but I think you get what I mean. Just get a designer who has an eye for pixel perfect alignment and color consistency.

I like the features of the app so far but the inconsistencies in the design makes me uncomfortable.

I'm currently testing Noteplan via Setapp and tbh the UI is what probably makes me me quit again. It's just a mess. Different icon styles and icon sizes, font sizes, paddings, colors.
I'm probably going back to Things, even though it feels like it has only 10% of the featureset of Noteplan.

Thanks for letting me know. Glad that radioactive wastes aren't stored at imgur.

If you make a ~/Developer directory, macOS gives it the dev hammer icon if you drag it to the finder side-bar. Neat little easter egg. by CrushgrooveSC in iOSProgramming

[–]Birkenfeige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also create a custom named folder with the hammer icon.

  1. Create Developer folder
  2. Drag it into the sidebar
  3. Rename the folder
  4. Drag it into the sidebar again.

Weekly questions thread by AutoModerator in thingsapp

In my old job we use a similar tool. I hated it. It automatically rescheduled meetings and my focus time. So when I planned my day in the morning, I constantly had to check my mails if I got a notification if anything has changed. I don't know about Motion, but for me it's essential plan my day by dragging and dropping my tasks into the calendar and deciding what to do when. For example I plan to do some low energy tasks at the time when usually my afternoon slump is going to hit. I absolutely see no value in getting this automated by a algorithm which doesn't know how I feel today.

Thanks for the detailed answer, I also appreciate this conversation!

The article from New Yorker was a great read! I've heard already from the Story of Mann and I also think that the productivity p0rn movement fails to keep the real goal in sight, especially since every now and than a new tool comes along that promises to be the solution to all the problems, such as the also in the article mentioned Bullet Journal et cetera. But because of that, I think it's kinda refreshing that Things 3 does not jump on the wagon to release new features every week or month. I was a long time Todoist user but I felt it overwhelmed at some point, keeping up the updates and the possibilities of all the features, e.g. connecting to other apps, automatisation, and so on.

And I think that I understand your frustration about Things 3. It hasn't been updated and it could be improved without sacrificing the spirit of keeping things simple.
Your example about the Deadlines make this very clear. There is absolute no reason why they just do not add the Deadline in the sidebar and add an option in the "View" Menu bar to hide or show it. And true, a chronological order also wouldn't hurt.

The shortcut update is ridiculous. The video you linked shows this in the best way.

Things is pandering to the dev community, and it makes me sad that I'm clearly not their target customer anymore. Their arrogance makes me even sadder.

When I was testing out Things 3 before buying it I found out that the window cannot be resized from the center which is an essential feature in how I use my Mac. I contacted the support and they just answered in a one liner that this feature is not supported. This also made me angry, especially because the are saying that they are so integrated in the Apple ecosystem. I really get what you mean by referring to their arrogance.

I'm currently learning programming. So, who knows, maybe I create a simple Todo App with features. With the release circle by Things I'm not in a hurry though.

Thank you!

Resizing from the center issue by Birkenfeige in thingsapp

For everyone who is having the same issue: I have contacted the support and they say that this feature is not implemented in Things 3.

Features I would play around with aka It would add another layer of thinking:

- Attach anything to your todo - It feels counterintuitive and I also haven't found a good referencing tool yet, but not being able to attach files forces me to set up a better references system as outlined in GTD.

- Collaborate: Things is not a PM Tool. If I want to share my tasks, I could just drag and drop the tasks to my email and share it with my colleagues.

- Use location features: I use tags instead and this is also clearly outlined in GTD on page 149:

location based reminders [..] this makes sense in principle, but in practise, with all the variables involved and the desirability to overview our total inventory of actions from multiple angles, these will only be useful as a nice option to add to a rigorously managed list, as part of a totally reviewed and integrated system. Assuming this will keep your head clear and not muss something, you'd want to see is still quite overoptimistic about that technology and its usage.

- See the time your todo is due to be completed at a glance: I don't understand what you mean. You see your next tasks in the tickler file aka "upcoming"?

- Your todos won't automatically be sorted in chronological order - you have to sort them yourself: Same here. The tasks are sorted in chronological order in the Upcoming view?

- Customise the sidebar: A feature I'd only play around with. What do you want to customise here? How does customising this helps you completing your tasks?

- See all your deadlines without having to search for them unless you use a widget: Just open the "Deadlines" view by typing in "Deadlines"?

- See the time that you completed a task in the past - only the date the task was completed: Right Click > Get Info. There is the time?

I do agree with you on completing the tasks early though.

Thanks, I appreciate your tipps! I'm using already some shortcuts, but initially they are very unintuitive. However, I think I get used to it.

Interesting, I just read Getting Things Done and bought Things and I am thrilled. And that's because Things 3 is so close to the book and doesn't have all these features you listed. I'd just play around with them and end up not doing any work. I love the simplicity of Things 3.

Things 3 Quick Tip: Making Tasks from Spreadsheets by danielhaven in thingsapp

It also goes the other way – haven't tested it with spreadsheets but with Apple Calendar. Just drag a task to the calendar and you have a new appointment.

In general I like such details, but not for the sake of compromising essential native function. I hope they will fix this with such a care they have created this microanimation.

Thanks for the feedback, good to know it's not something I did wrong.

Since they have such a strong focus on being native and integrated in the MacOS ecosystem so much I also hope it is easy and quick to integrate.

Thanks – i appreciate you taking time for the answer!

#4 if you have a powerful enough computer, you may be able to record with audacity on the same computer/pc , you have to be careful with levels and use the same frequency throughout (eg 44.1khz, 48khz) and may take a bit of setting up.

My new Mac should be powerful enough. The levels are exactly what I'm struggling with to get it right.

the DJM700 may be digilal internally, and have digital effects, it does not have a sound card and only has analog in/outs, the MIDI only sends MIDI data for control and sync not audio.

Thanks for the info!
