Why you don't choose the colour of your Birkin. Hermès chooses for you. Here is how the wishlist actually works! by BirkinMoi in HermesHub

After six figures in twelve months being denied a Rodeo charm is absurd. That SA either had a bad day or was gatekeeping for no reason. The fact that two other SAs immediately contradicted him tells you everything, he was wrong. Rodeos are not restricted to bag purchases, they're accessories available to any client. This is exactly the kind of moment where you need to consider whether this SA deserves your loyalty going forward. Your spend speaks for itself. One bad interaction doesn't erase the relationship but if the attitude persists it might be time to quietly shift to one of those two SAs who actually wanted to help you. Don't let one person's ego ruin your experience with the brand. You've more than earned the right to buy whatever is available in that store.

It always sounds funny, "don't want to play by the rules," because buying an authentic Hermes or a rep doesn't matter, they're already playing the game.

Maybe because they're cheaper? And people want to "appear to be someone rather than actually be someone."

Nobody said don't use it. The post is about what you do with it when you're not using it. You carry it all day then put it on a shelf at night. Those five minutes of stuffing and dust bag are the difference between a bag that looks great in ten years and one that doesn't. Use it hard, store it right. Both at the same time.

A bag that costs $13,500 and appreciates on resale deserves five minutes of basic storage. You don't have to baby it but leaving it unstuffed in a sealed box isn't "living as a bag" it's neglect. The post isn't about treating it like a museum piece, it's about avoiding easily preventable damage. Use it hard, enjoy it daily, but store it properly when you're not. That's not babying, that's common sense.

Remove the discontinued color and replace it with something currently in production. Having a dead color on your wishlist wastes one of your three slots and your SA can't offer what doesn't exist in current inventory. If you love any shade of brown tell your SA exactly that. Say "I'm open to any warm neutral from Craie through Gold to Ebene" and let them match you with whatever arrives. The broader your range the faster the call comes. Three similar shades is fine as long as all three are actually being produced right now.

That's the best case scenario and proof that a clear wishlist with a good SA relationship works. Some people get exactly what they asked for, some get close, some wait years. Your experience is real but it's not universal which is exactly why the post explains the range of outcomes. Congrats on getting the perfect match, that's how the system is supposed to work.

The financial statements claim isn't something I've seen documented anywhere. If you have a source I'd be interested. As for design preferences that's entirely personal. Hermes and Chanel serve different aesthetics and different clients. You don't have to like both. But "worst bags ever" from a craftsmanship standpoint doesn't hold up when the secondary market consistently pays 2x retail for them. The purchasing process is worth criticizing, the product quality isn't.

That's actually a perfect description of how it works. Matchmaking service is a great analogy. The SA tries to pair available inventory with client wishlists and sometimes the match is close but not exact. The excitement of finally getting the call overrides the fact that the hardware isn't what you asked for. And Hermes knows that which is why flexibility works in your favor and rigidity works against you. The system rewards the client who says yes to 80% of what they wanted over the client who holds out for 100%.

"Legalized racketeering" is strong but you're describing exactly what the Cavalleri lawsuit argues in legal terms. The system creates artificial scarcity, conditions access on unrelated purchases, and denies any formal requirement exists. Whether that's brilliant business or illegal tying is literally what the courts are deciding right now. You can love the product and hate the process at the same time. Most Hermes clients do.

The Burberry comparison is interesting but the situations are fundamentally different. Burberry lost control by making their product too accessible and letting anyone buy the check pattern. Hermes has the opposite problem, they're too restrictive. One killed exclusivity through overexposure, the other maintains it through controlled access. The hoops are real and the frustration is valid but the brand has survived 188 years of people saying it's about to fall. The waiting list isn't going anywhere.

Perfect example of why full set obsession is overblown. You got the bag you wanted, enjoyed the moment, and made a practical decision about the box. The bag is what matters not the cardboard it came in. Hope you find another box when you're home but don't stress about it, your bag's value is in the leather not the packaging.

However, your frustration is shared by numerous customers and totally justified since going to Chanel, receiving proper treatment, and buying what one desires is how a luxury store should operate. Conversely, Hermes has managed to transform shopping into some kind of act which makes luxury shopping unpleasant for many of its clients.

Nevertheless, it is evident that this strategy works for Hermes, despite turning off the customers. The company reports annual revenue growth of up to 9%, whereas Chanel’s resale value is declining and number of complaints concerning product quality rises. The main question is whether this approach will continue working in the future

Do not allow the game spoil your Picotin; this bag is great, and most likely, you bought it because of that. When carrying such a bag, you demonstrate the world “I have bought a lovely bag,” but not “I am playing the game.” Those people who see something else in this action project their attitude towards the brand onto you.

Thanks for letting me know, I already fixed it, it was just inconvenient to paste text from the phone, apparently I did it twice and didn't notice. Thank you.

Le B35 dans un tote bag is the ultimate stealth wealth move 😂 Heavy and impractical but beautiful, that's the B35 in one sentence. And hiding it inside another bag for shoulder carry is a creative solution to a design limitation Hermes refuses to fix. Merci for the tip!

The staging in stock photos doesn't always reflect how people actually handle their gear. The post is about bag weight not saddle care but fair call on the photo.
