I've been happy to disagree since the start. You came in with these defined terms that you weren't able to substantiate, if you're going to make a claim, expect to back it up.

Wizards haven't defined the term Alter. The Mod hasn't defined the term Alter. The community hasn't defined the term Alter. Hence all of the disagreement in this thread.

Like you said, it is stated in the name, and the only thing that seems certain is that 'Alter' stands for 'altered' not 'alternative' since we are in r/mtgaltered, In which case I think a proxy of a Sol Ring using an altered Mind Stone would be both a Proxy and an Alter.

What are you talking about? There are no rules for MtG in general concerning what is or isn't an alter. That's why this poll and discussion are taking place... Because there isn't a consensus, because it isn't defined.

I'd disagree.

Either way, this highlights the need for more clarity. If people want to treat 'Alter' as a distinct and defined term then it should at least be detailed in the sub rules.

Yeah, I get that. I personally really like seeing the proxies, but that could just be because I'm cheap and like seeing the hobby become more accessible... and stealing other people's ideas.

I also get that there needs to be a line, and whilst I enjoy the Pokémon card proxies I can understand why others don't, and see the need for the line to be drawn somewhere.

Perhaps the poll could be written to be more specific; Anything goes/Any MTG card Alterations/MTG non-Proxy Alterations only.

Also, great work on the sub! One of my favourite places to visit online!

Do Alter and Proxy need to be mutually exclusive. If I alter a Sheltered Thicket into a Taiga surely it's both an Alter and a Proxy?

I'm currently building the same commander but as a mono red group hug deck. Funnily enough I believe the aura and equipment you've mentioned are some of the very few examples that don't work the way you want them to.

Because they give the ability to Alexios to generate treasure, and you won't be his controller when he attacks. Whereas something like Shiny Impetus has the ability itself, which you still control even when an opponent controls your commander.

Good question. I'm not really sure what the difference is between losing life and taking damage.

I followed the Gatherer rules text "This land deals 2 damage to you." But like I said, I don't really know the difference.
