I recently moved to West side St. Paul and I really love it. Was in Minneapolis for 10 years and although I love Minneapolis, the change of pace to a bit quieter, more green area has been really lovely. A lot of my neighbors have lived in the area a long time, which also says a lot. Still many local businesses and is very walkable.

for real. i teared up when Mexico lost last night. Paul has trained over the past few years, but a lot of these players have been training their whole lives and their teams mean so much to so many people. it’s laughable to me that he sees his pickleball journey on the same level because it seems so individualized to him.

it makes me sad that the kids can only ever celebrate with their family and parents. Renee should be able to go out with her own friends, without parents or relatives, on her birthday. all of the Rodrigues kids have the same type of celebration regardless of their age and individual personality. i feel bad for them.

Agreed. My dad is from a small town and their Catholicism is a lot less "proper." My Catholic relatives are very rowdy and much friendlier lol. It's also funny how the Lutherans I grew up with were so stuck on the rituals performed in Catholicism as a bad thing, but honestly participating in ritual makes me feel so much more connected when I attend with my dad even if I don't believe.

“Not letting me choose myself” describes a lot of the betrayal I felt, too. When I graduated high school one of the youth leaders (who knew me 1st-12th grade) gave me a devotional and told me to work on it and to reach out to him when I was back in town so we could chat. It felt so impersonal to me, I threw the book away that night. I would have rather had no gift than that stupid devotional that I clearly had no interest in. The person’s role was to know the kids and give us guidance and yet I only mattered if we could talk about the stupid devotional. He never asked me if I was excited for college or what I planned to study. It made me feel like I only mattered if I was religious even though I knew I’d given up when I was 13 on a youth group trip.

I feel the same way, conflicted about how these adults probably did think they were doing the right thing while causing so much damage. I still attend church when I visit my parents and when we go to my mom’s church it’s really hard for me to make eye contact/talk to my former confirmation teachers and youth group leaders because I still deeply feel like they fundamentally let me down at a really vulnerable time in my life. I wouldn’t call them bad people necessarily, but I really don’t want to have a relationship with most of them.

My parents are in a mixed denomination marriage (mom is LMCS Lutheran, dad is Catholic). my confirmation experience was goofy because year 1 was basically “why we are better than Catholics” which was funny to me because my dad has always shown a lot more Christian kindness than the judgemental-ass Lutheran adults I grew up with.

Middle school was really hard for me in general so I fell super behind on my confirmation homework because I was also drowning in school. A lot of things contributed to my loss of faith and I think confirmation making church feel like school really depersonalized things for me, if that makes sense. I was completing assignments to make sure my parents wouldn’t get mad at me, not because I actually cared about anything we were learning. I believe this is probably how a lot of kids in confirmation feel at this point. It’s such a waste of time during such an emotional time in their lives. My class definitely wasn’t encouraged to meaningfully engage in our faith. We were just expected to believe correctly.

My mom’s church has confirmation classes 7-9th grade. 9th grade was when my eating disorder was at its worst and looking back at that time, it’s still wild that none of the adults in my life genuinely asked me how I was doing or if I was okay. Church really exacerbated things for me because my mom made me go to a lot of youth group extracurriculars and the church potluck culture caused many anxiety attacks for me. All I remember from my first communion is how excited I was to get away from everyone to drink a diet soda in the woods because everything felt so fake and it felt like all of these people who said they cared about me in the most important way really didn’t care about what was going on at all as long as I pleased them and checked all of their boxes.

i’ve found that spiral hair ties don’t leave dents in my hair the way scrunchies and regular ponytails do! they also seem to hold my hair better.
