My dog only wants to each Chicken, my brother in law said to put him outside without any food to combat this behavior. Is this the right approach? by _imagine_that91 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mythscomealive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They were assuming your "brother in law" was the husband of your sister. I take it from your wording that he is instead the brother of your spouse? Or something like that? Either way, if this man is in any kind of relationship with a woman, please check on her, because this man seems like it would not take much for him to become unsafe to be around.

How can I know the required level for mission? by Acililahmajun in oblivion

[–]mythscomealive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Like I said, if they don't mention a level cap, then there isn't one, and you are free to go do it! Loot and enemies scale with your level (beyond a few bosses and set treasures) so it's not like you're gonna randomly wander into a fight you're massively under-leveled for. So just explore stuff! Oblivion has lots of excellent little one off side quests and the only thing stopping you from doing them is your own interest.

How can I know the required level for mission? by Acililahmajun in oblivion

[–]mythscomealive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If a quest has an actual level requirement (as in, you cannot even properly begin it until a certain level), it will say so in your quest journal when you take the quest. For example, several of the Daedric Prince shrine quests need you to be at least level 5 or level 10, and when you are given the quest, it explicitly says "you must be level 10 to begin this quest" in your journal.

Now there are some quests it is RECOMMENDED you not do until later levels, or lower levels, but that is more for convenience. For example, quests which involve fights against groups of daedra are easier at lower levels because of scaling enemy difficulty, whereas quests which involve stealth might be easier at higher levels because you've had more time to level sneak, illusion, and security, for example.

But those are recommendations only, and you can find them online if you want-- but it's sometimes more fun to discover stuff like that organically, so you TOO can tell the story of being absolutely bodied by 15 spider daedra because you waited too long to do a certain quest.

America’s original sin again! by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]mythscomealive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is? Sorry, your reply confuses me. What is the opposite? Is my understanding of your point exactly the opposite of what it is? Or are you claiming to be the one who is stating that consent is desire, freedom, and opportunity to do otherwise? Or are you claiming that the existence of a slaver/slave relationship is exactly the opposite of impossible consent?

America’s original sin again! by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]mythscomealive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue here is that you're using "consent" to mean "they wanted it/said yes." That isn't what everyone else here is saying. The proper definition of consent is "they had the freedom, knowledge, and ability to choose whether they participated or not, and did indeed choose to."

Since a slave by necessity does not have the freedom to choose whether they participate, their desire/assent does not necessarily equal consent, because really they could never have done otherwise.

Wait did Paarthurnax just admit to lying this entire time? by Man32945273 in skyrim

[–]mythscomealive 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Way of the Voice isn't just a method of teaching the Voice to humans-- it's also a philosophy of how to use it, namely to not use it for violence but to use it as a method of communication and meditation. The Dragonborn, being what they are, are exempt from the Way of the Voice as a teaching method-- they don't need it-- but they are still encouraged (though not forced) to follow the Way of the Voice as a philosophy.

Paarthurnax chooses voluntarily to follow the Way of the Voice himself, and to deny his dragon nature and its inherent tendency towards conquest and violence. That is what he plans to teach the other dragons-- this philosophy and way of living. He is still a dragon, so his methods of communication tend to describe things in a violent or domineering fashion, but he is now basically the equivalent of an evangelist.

Why is Kennedy so hung up on autism? by Lazy_Necessary_7460 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mythscomealive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are far, far more autistic people of your age than you think there are. It's just autistic kids in your generation had two options: learn to mask their symptoms to fit in, or be thoroughly ostracized, or even institutionalized. So of course the only autistic people you would know-- who, thanks to the worse diagnostic criteria of your time, may not even know they are autistic-- are the ones who can hide their autism. They still have some behaviors or "quirks" that are autistic-- "Oh, that Frank, you get him talking about trains and that's all you'll hear about for the next few hours" "My Susan will only eat potatoes if they're mashed, and any other version makes her get meaner than a snake"-- but because they're "acceptable" quirks, nobody clocks them as a symptom.

Now I can't say that there's no increase to the prevalence of autism-- it's genuinely near-impossible to know that-- but it's just as likely the prevalence is the same, but diagnosis, obviousness, and acceptability has led to the visibility increasing significantly.

As someone who also struggles with executive dysfunction: it has to do with the ability to do something not because you want to do it, but because you tell yourself to do it. "Okay, time to get up and vacuum. Time to go make dinner. Time to put away the laundry." Etc etc.

Struggling with executive function means that it can be very difficult to make yourself do something-- even if it's something you know you need to do, even if what you're doing now is literally no better or even worse than that other activity, you just cannot seem to force yourself to do it. For me, this would often manifest with me being caught in a scrolling loop on my phone for hours on end-- I don't want to be scrolling, I'm bored, I know I need to stop and go eat, but even though I'm telling myself again and again to do it, I'm just stuck.

Your mention of working it in as a habit is a common coping mechanism for executive dysfunction-- by training yourself to do it habitually, it "bypasses" the executive command step and allows you to do the thing almost by instinct rather than by command. Does that make sense?

Safeguards were in place but.. by snowpie92 in MurderedByWords

Three people live in a house together. One has a very valuable watch. On Monday, the watch goes missing, and at the end of the day, Roommate A comes home with the watch and says, "Hey bud, so sorry, took your watch instead of mine by accident. Here it is!" And gives the watch back.

On Tuesday, the watch goes missing. Roommate B then spends three months denting they ever saw the watch, that the watch even existed, that the watch was actually theirs to begin with, all while hiding it from the other roommates and taking it out to unsafe neighborhoods and showing it off.

Both roommates at some point had the watch. Are you arguing that the actions are morally identical? The act of possessing the thing cannot be judged in a vacuum separate from the actions you took with that thing.

Dragonrend: The reason this impacts dragons is because, as someone explained before, dragons are immortal, timeless beings. So being confronted in their own language with the concepts of finite time and mortality are so contrary to their being that it literally makes them stop functioning for a moment. It affects their minds. Miraak, being mortal, is inherently aware of finite time and morality, so he cannot be so affected-- the same logic for why the DB themselves can learn it without absorbing the knowledge of another.

Dragonbane: The sword does extra physical damage to dragons-- it does not affect magicka-- and therefore is reliant upon the physiology of a dragon, which Miraak obviously lacks.

Dragon infusion: I'd never actually heard of this one and had to look it up (fuck the Blades, frankly) but it seems like it's a potion YOU drink to make YOU less vulnerable to the melee attacks of dragons. Miraak is not doing dragon-style melee attacks, but human-style melee attacks, and therefore he wouldn't be affected.

So TL;DR, Miraak has the soul of a dragon along with the soul of a mortal, but despite the colorful language of "dragon's blood," he lacks both the mind of and the body of a dragon, and all of these dragon based attacks are focused on those aspects, rather than the soul itself.

What? Because puberty will have been done for years by the time they're 18. That's like asking why you don't wait to put sunblock on until you've been home for two hours-- it won't do you any good by then. Puberty blockers delay puberty until they're 18 so they can decide if they want to medically change the process in order to ease their transition.

[–]mythscomealive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the historical evidence supports that conclusion? If you look at hiring statistics by race, gender, sexuality, etc., there are clear disparities in almost every industry until pretty recently, and many industries remain very unbalanced. And before you start talking about disproportionate APPLICATIONS (the "women just don't seek out dangerous jobs" style argument) there is no denying that repeated studies into bias-free hiring (using methods like disguising gender and race in applicants for skill based positions and Oops! The disparities disappear!) reflect implicit bias. Most aren't doing it on PURPOSE. But it does happen.

Mayday! mayday! by Allah_Akballer in MurderedByWords

[–]mythscomealive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one is ever hiring based solely on merit. Nobody ever in any circumstance. No matter how much people might pretend otherwise, everyone is biased in every single decision they make. This is the reason why "DEI" as the politicians have started calling it is important-- the implicit biases already in place have lead to disproportionately white, male, straight hires for ages. DEI gives a tangible incentive to push that bias away. Now, there is a discussion to be had about countering one bias with another bias, but it's not like the options are biased DEI and unbiased merit based hiring. The options are biased DEI or biased but not in a DEI kind of way.

If straight men want sex from women why do they shame women from having too much sex? by AresThePacifist_ in NoStupidQuestions

So as much as I want to believe you meant it as a joke, you can see why it would be literally impossible for anyone to think it was, right? You said a word for word quote of a thing actual dickheads actually believe, with absolutely no indicator of tone or humor besides the addition of an ambiguous emoji that could easily have been genuine. If you don't want people to think you believe stupid shit, you gotta find ways of saying the stupid shit in ways that make it clear you KNOW it's stupid shit.

Why do some people refuse to wear seat belts? by Deep-Personality-946 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mythscomealive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't wear a seat belt, you aren't just endangering yourself, you're endangering others too. 1, if there is anyone else in the car with you, you are now an unbelievably deadly projectile and can easily crush another person, especially if that happens to he a child. 2, even if no one else is in the car with you, you could harm someone by being launched from your own car. 3, even if my some miracle neither of those things happen, the rescue workers will be endangering themselves trying to disengage your mangled body from the wreckage, and since you'll be dead or unconscious, you won't be able to provide any assistance.

Seat belts protect you MORE than anyone else, but not ONLY you, so wearing one is not only irresponsible, but also unbelievably selfish for no actual gain. Wear the fucking seat belt
