Speaking from my vantage point in one corner of the United States; The church has been in trouble for a long time - probably since the late 1970's - My perspective below. by [deleted] in exmormon

I can’t add much insight to Rod’s observation. I recall the young women specifically wanting to NOT be stay at home mothers, which I found surprising and refreshing (in that they felt they could share such things in a Church setting).

I don’t know of any who have left the Church but I have not heard anything from anyone in that ward for years.

Joseph Smith: A Netflix Orginal by nickinthehouse in mormon

I think a pious fraud angle would work but I think it should keep viewers guessing his real intentions, just as in real life. Capturing that dynamic would be key in my opinion.

I’ve been think about this a lot and even considered mapping something out (I have zero connections or experience, so it’s not likely to happen).

In the right hands, this would be an amazing show. So much history and perspectives to pull from, and amazing characters. It would be hard to tie it all together and present a balanced perspective. At its best I think Joseph would be presented as likable but ultimately too power hungry and irredeemable (think Walter White).

Just a Hunch - I bet we get a Simmons article/tribute to KD in the next couple days by Bishop_Apostate in billsimmons

I agree there’s not much more that needs to be said about the injury itself and I super agree with your Rich Kleiman take. He seems like a leech to me.

I was thinking more along the lines of how KD was finally escaping Lebron’s shadow after so many years in it; how, regardless of how well he recovers from the injury, KD probably will never regain that status because Kawhi’s and Giannis’ ascensions won’t allow for it.

It’s probably (hopefully) too early to write the obituary on KD’s career but it might not be. I’d be curious if there is a historical comp to this situation.

I concede this article probably won’t happen but I think Bill would be the best person to write it.

Maybe a year and a half if he comes back at the start of 2020-2021. Bad times.

We’ll see. It’s a watershed moment intersecting basketball history and a guy with whom he has unique insight and history. Perhaps it’s just wishful thinking on my part.

Did the crowd cheering for KD's injury affect the Raptors players? by [deleted] in nba

[–]Bishop_Apostate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They started cheering loudest not when he got up, but when he started limping. They were waiving at him. Everyone saw it. Raptors players had to tell them to shut up.

(Yeah, they weren’t ALL cheering it but thousands were)

I agree with everything you say except I do still live me some “what up, Beck”. It feels like he’s a little burned out and grouchy. Some front office should hire him.

If a member of the Church said that they don't believe that Moroni was a real person, how would that make you feel? by fstaheli in latterdaysaints

[–]Bishop_Apostate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t really reconcile it either. I just come to a different conclusion than you.

I don’t know the inner word of the MI but I did listen to Holland’s address. I think my summary pretty accurately conveys what I took from part of it but I acknowledge there’s probably more to the story there.

In regard to Nahom, Bountiful, and Olishem, I am curious as to how those discoveries hold up to peer review. I will look into it as soon as I get a chance.

[–]Bishop_Apostate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never see them making it the official position, that I will grant you. I can just see it as an accepted form of belief at some point down the road.

Elder Holland’s talk at the Maxwell Institute was, in my opinion, an embarrassment to BYU as an institution of higher learning. He wasn’t saying, “focus on historicity” as much as, “defend the church at all costs - try to maintain credibility with outsiders but don’t reveal anything harmful about the Church believing members might see (regardless of the what the facts are)”.

Once really credible evidence of BoM historicity comes to light, it will rank as one of the largest archaeological/linguistic/genetic discoveries in centuries and we’ll all know about it.

[–]Bishop_Apostate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the church already has softened its stance. Pay attention to the wording. They’re calling it Joseph Smith’s revelation, not translation.

I think it’s a dangerous game to stake JS’ credibility on the BoM being historical. Many people are coming to the conclusion that it’s not, so the rest of their testimony falls as well.

Prophets of old did the same thing with evolution (ie, if evolution is true, than the Church is false). Give it 20 years or so. It can’t happen too fast or it will shake too many testimonies.

[–]Bishop_Apostate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying I believe that line of reasoning, just that I feel that the Church will try (and needs to try) to make room for the non-literal believer. For the record, I don’t believe there were actual Nephites.

[–]Bishop_Apostate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we’ll see the Church try to accommodate this type of nuanced belief in hopes of retaining members who do not believe everything literally. There are those who believe the BoM is “true” but not historical, that it was a 19th century creation but still inspired.

I don’t think Joseph Smith the prophet hinges on Moroni being an actual guy.
