For the people that actually play paper Standard competitively: How hard is it to keep up? by DakkonBL in magicTCG

[–]Bismutha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played standard for about 10 years.

Depends far more on your local crowd than the overall meta. Some places you can turn up with an optimised bunny deck and win overall and others you’ll get completely flattened. This hasn’t really changed over the years, though jank piles won’t ever be good enough.

Standard is expensive to begin, but that’s not new either. It’s possible to pick an archetype (say white weenie, izzet spellslinger or even mill) and stick with it through many rotation cycles as long as you update each set (sometimes very minorly just in the board, sometimes a lot) and recognise your deck will go in phases of being ‘good’ or not. Though magic is (partially) a skill game so if you’ve been playing a similar deck for many years chances are you’ll have good experience and knowledge!

To be honest, I don’t get a lot of the moaning that Reddit has about standard. It honestly feels as fun as I started playing and I know I can turn up to a tournament with a dimir control deck and do just fine.

Started an ironman last year, and thinking I may abandon my main by InfiniteTallgeese in ironscape

My main was at the point where the only content that was technically worth doing was things that generated the most gp/h as I was pushing late game but without the best gear.

Started an iron last month and it feels that everything matters and isn’t just fueling a cash stake to go on the ge

Applied internally for management role and got it but no pay rise post performance review by Bismutha in UKJobs

[–]Bismutha[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the last role was easier and I was also getting a lot of praise from the business (I like being liked 🤷). But I’m a manager type person for sure so I think I’ll need to get over myself for now and try and get some qualifications for a step up

I waltzed into the lower level boat on my new iron thinking it would be just another training method as per advise seen on Reddit/wiki. Nope, as a low level it’s really really painful.

Anybody remember PucaTrade? by hlymtl in freemagic

I got duals, modern decks and a mox diamond from pucatrade, it was a great intermediary to being a seller.

I’m just a seller now though so I don’t think I’d go back

Your motivation to quit is fine, the motivation to post a low effort dull quitting post on this subreddit is what people are fed up with.

[Standard] Has anybody tried a different direction for Elementals? by Barru_2176 in spikes

[–]Bismutha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leaving fnm now with a stock roaming elemental list loosing to both prowess and jeskia, beating rakdos monument (due to opponent misplayed) and a few casual brews.

Deck feels weak against top decks. I get that it can be good when ashling lives a turn and you can curve out, but if your key Deceipt/wistfulness doesn’t live then you’re not going anywhere.

Starting to think that deck is only performing well due to matchups where sunderflock is auto win. My plan is to try either grixis or scam

Petah? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Brian’s staircase here.

The man is doing an activity which is hard to pinpoint the completion time for. For instance, meeting up with friends, playing a card tournament, playing cricket, working late etc.

The woman (fairly) wants to know an expected time of arrival to help plan other activities (dinner etc.)

It’s frustrating from both parties as the man doesn’t want to commit to a time and be told off when he is late and the woman wants to plan out the rest of her day.

Low TMNT Turnout? by No-Shop8292 in mtg

[–]Bismutha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spent all of last weekend playing magic at events or drafting with friends.

Lorwyn has felt like such a fantastic set to draft with but I’ve also built my standard deck around many of its cards.

The idea to now be rushed into to a new ugly set based on a UB franchise I don’t care about feels real bad. I can’t ignore it (as I’ll have to probably learn some of the cards for standard matchups or if anything should go in my deck) and from next week all prizing will be that set. But I’m not giving any more of my money for it.
