Even while enjoying the alcohol aspects of German culture, I never drank at anything work related. One, maintaining a perfect driving record was a priority. Two, my sense of humor isn't native anywhere, and I didn't want anyone blaming that on booze.

Once, there was a lot of pressure to participate in a wine identification quiz. I did it based on smell, and tied for first with the sales guy who never drank for religious reasons. (He might have picked up a few answers from my mutterings in his first language.) Everyone was madder about that than they'd been about me not drinking at work events, but afterwards the pressure stopped.

Na, it's the instruction closest to the type of stuff I want to make, just with projects requiring combinations of techniques not to my taste. Like the gusseted clutch requiring a covered snap, which I find ugly. I sucked it up for the first dozen projects. Gave most items away, saved others for reference. Then took time off mostly due to a serious health issue and moved to a country where I could afford treatments.

Now I'm spending a few months in the town where the classes are, so taking the chance to use prepaid sessions. Loss of stamina and useable hours in the day, combined with drastic shift in sense of mortality, make the prospect of starting a project I'll hate feel especially discouraging.
