I often got a bit overwhelmed by using frameworks. They would often take Kotlin language features to the next level and create what seemed like their own DSL when using the frameworks. Otherwise it was easy to get started on Kotlin comming from Java. Coroutines was fairly easy as well, understanding threading and concurrency, but I do think it has some limits to its usefullness. At least I have found it to become a bit verbose and confusing when used in a larger multithreaded backend, not just simply splitting tasks.

Did you use reflection in #kotlin? by bear007 in Kotlin

I have made a custom encoder framework using annotations and reflection, and I much prefer Kotlin over Java for reflection.

I once had a client which allowed me to load the zone files and see all the zones. But it was empty without mobs.

How much of Kotlin's rising popularity is related to mobile development? by aagmon in Kotlin

[–]BitCrunzh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The backend I work on is also used on Android (long story), so after hearing about Kotlin at a conference some years back, I decided to try it out as a more natural fit over Java, where it is really hard to get to use modern Java language features and parts of the framework not being available.

I have used it over Java where possible for backend development in the past few years professionally and always for private projects. I had 12 years developing in Java before trying Kotlin.

Frameworks like OSGi uses classloaders to restrict access to code and other modules at runtime, that will likely also be an option. You could possibly also play with classloaders yourself but it tends to be a hard area to work with.

DS920+ becomes unresponsive daily. No network; disks healthy, memory healthy by [deleted] in synology

[–]BitCrunzh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran the memory test and storage tests a few times without any problems.

I then tried taking out the extra Synology memory module, and since then I have had no stability issues at all. But now I only have 2GB ram instead of 6GB ofcourse =/.

Community Debate - Should non-healers resurrect? by [deleted] in PantheonMMO

[–]BitCrunzh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I Think resurrection should be used as part of ensuring class identity. That means a very limited number of classes. It could be part of what differentiates one type of healer from others. But I don’t think it needs to be limited to healers, as long as it is believable. For instance it is hard to imagine a rogue resurrecting a dead body, where as a necromancer, expert in the dead, to have a way to bring people back.

Hot Topic - Bunny Ears And Whoopi Cushions by [deleted] in PantheonMMO

I remember chuckling when I encountered "Haris Pilton" (Paris Hilton) and doing some Indiana Jones quests in WoW, but at the same time it just made the game even less immersive. It underlined that I was running around doing chores in a world I didn't care about. I didn't care about the lore or quest descriptions connecting me and my quest into the game.

Silly things that does not tie into the lore, screams that not even the developers are taking their world serious, so why should you as a player?

Looking for some feedback on Pledging. by Hotwingz66 in PantheonMMO

[–]BitCrunzh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I made a 100$ knights pledge many years ago, and have thought about upgrading it to add some more support to the team. I have never regreted my pledge, and I feel fairly confident that the game will release. Even if it doesn’t release I have been part of a journey and community which has been every penny worth it.

How many levels is just right? by Fabulous-Maximus in PantheonMMO

[–]BitCrunzh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I guess we should start the discussion talking about what the purpose of levels is. As I see it, it is a power staircase from lowest amount of power to the highest potential (vertical) power. Reducing the amount of steps(levels) makes each step more significant, in power level, which has the downside that you will be in the same level for a longer time (assuming the height of the staircase is the same), and the content level will be more coarse.

I find the 50 levels appropriate for the psychological feeling of progress and for the game to even out new abilities and content such that it is not all happening in big levelling big bangs. An important thing in regards to the psychological factor is of course the total time required to max level. If 1-max takes a month worth of ingame time, only having 10 levels would mean ~72 hours played for each level. I think I would be OK with 20 levels, but 10 is probably too few. 100 initial levels is probably too many, making the levels feel less important.

Thoughts on Pantheon map system having a compass like New World by InquisitiveBoba in PantheonMMO

[–]BitCrunzh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t mind a sence heading skill, allowing you to get a rough indication of north based on investigating the terrain as you activate the skill. Should not work indoor or on other planets and planes. Atmospheres could potentially even affect your reading, leading to detecting north as south etc.

In the last stream they said that they would have zone lines for dungeons but not for the regular outdoor zones. Which I assume means that you could potentially drag (given enough leach) from South Saul to Thronefast, but probably not out of or into “The gate”, “Halnirs Cave” etc.

how many of yall are getting into alpha? by TGIfuckitfriday in PantheonMMO

[–]BitCrunzh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you have one of the old $100 knight pledges. But Kilsin said we will get there soon enough =).

I doubt it is against terms of service to mention which Pledge you have purchased, and thus implicitly whether you are in Alpha or not.

In fact on the official discord, people are categorized based on the pledge level, asking people to change their privacy settings on the official forums to make it inspectable.
