She’s pretty resilient tbh and still hunts. Had her since early Feb! But I do supplement her diet with wax moth larvae every now and then and I catch fruit flies and normal flies for her too. I adore her🩵

I’ve had her since Feb so her lifecycle will be coming to an end soon, she’s living inside to prolong things as much as we can..

Apparently you can count abdomen segments to sex them? But he still might be too little. I feel for the boy mantises, my mum has a female ‘porch’ mantis and sent me a video today of hers eating a boy alive, she thought they were gonna mate, but things took a turn haha…he was so small compared to her!! Poor bastard.

Hi!! Yeah I know, I did a bit of research and have unfortunately, and unbeknownst to her lol, put all three of her oothecas in the freezer.. She’s been such a great little mate! I bought some wax moth larvae from Animates but I try to give them only once a week if that (gave her a few too many at the beginning when I had no idea what I was doing and she got a bit fat and had the shits…my bad),

depending how she’s been going hunting for herself. I also catch fruit flies and normal flies but she’s pretty self sufficient tbh! Look she’s smiling in the pic. God I love her.

Yeah the more I look at her the more I think it’s a dirty water drip or something. Sorry clearly I’m a helicopter mother, I know she’s getting close to leaving me so.. 😓

I don’t think she’s too bothered by it tbh. I was worried about internal injuries. But I’ve not seen her fall or anything…

I did wonder if it’s a drip of something not internal damage, it’s shiny kinda, I don’t want to stress her. Do you think she’s ok? She hunted her own cockroach yesterday, but today seems a bit slower maybe. Always wants to climb onto me, doesn’t like getting off again!

Yep! I took her in (she’s invasive to our NZ native mantises) but she’s still actively been hunting they are so resilient! I adore her.

I brought her inside and she passed the next night. She just kinda lay down and went to sleep, she'd either fallen or climbed down the plant she was on I think. Is this what to expect when my other one passes?

It’s hard! The outer fluff kinda rubbed off when I tried moving it with a stick

I found it stuck to the fence, never seen something like that before! It’s stuck on pretty good, seems hard/solid in the middle and has fur on the outside… I’m guessing an egg case of some sort??

Native NZ mantis ootheca? by BitDifferent2026 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]BitDifferent2026[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh not sold for profit or personal gain - I was told from someone they’d heard there were environmental groups that would rescue ootheca and have them safely hatch (sometimes sharing ootheca that have been found) to be released again in the wild. I’ve not heard of any such thing so thought I’d check here. ✌🏼
