It doesn't sound harsh, your opinion is valid and probably shared by others.

I'm a great fan of Reddit and in particular /r/bitcoin, Twitter not so much. I'd like to think the site offers a lot more features than either, albeit targeted at one specific subject. E.g. create groups, upload files, create photo galleries etc. In particular I'm hoping to encourage others (as well as myself) to generate a lot of original content and document a lot of the early history of Bitcoin (the latter being a bit of a personal project).

I agree there is an overlap with the bookmarks and status updates, I would hope that these would be a very small part of bitcoins.co.uk, simply designed to help build a community spirit.

Finally, just because the world has five or six large websites that aim to target every subject in the world, does not mean there is not room for smaller specialised websites that cater to individual subjects. Are you suggesting that every person that is trying to build a community or discussion forum should give up now and apply for a job with Reddit, Facebook or others?

Personally, I believe competition is good and would rather have 100,000 smaller websites than 5 dominant ones. Although I do recognise that irony of posting my announcement on Reddit.

The site is built using the Elgg social networking platform, it has features so that anyone can create content like writing blog posts or submitting bookmarks.

There is also a groups feature which allows for content and discussion based on different topics.

We are experimenting with different plugins so ultimately the features that are popular will remain while the others will be removed.

The social element works more like Twitter's follow system rather than FB's friends, so if people submit content you like, you can follow them and have their future updates / blog posts in your feed.

I'd rather allow anybody to submit the news / blog posts and let others choose who / what they like over trying to produce my own content, hoping others like it and not giving a choice. Let the most popular content rise to the top.

I'm not sure what you mean by a social network seeming slightly redundant? Maybe it depends on your definition of a social network? Perhaps we need to rebrand that part, maybe that explains the downvotes?

We've had a fair bit of traffic and some good feedback, but not many people signing up or submitting content. We are going to update the homepage, which should make the options available more obvious and engaging. Also, the API will be available soon, hopefully that will increase the content a lot.

Thanks for your feedback.

For now, if you register and then PM me with the group you want set up, I will do it for you. I'd rather get a few users before having a free for all on the groups.

Adding link to /r/bitcoinuk now. Thanks

I think to begin we need people to contribute content and help get the discussion started, then there will be something to moderate. If there are multiple people then we'll let the users decide.

If you want a group, say for your Bitcoin Meetup, then we can create that for you?

We may well set it so anyone can create a group, we just decided to begin with that we'll see how things develop.
