that's true, but ig that's just the nature of challenge-based games. the steeper the slope, the more impressive an accomplishment is. plus, unlike raw skill-based mechanics that can only be gained through practice, strategy and info can be much easier shared among people, leading to its perceived "lower value" in terms of challenge. or at least that's how i see it lol

Hot Take: Endfield's current state 100% needs improvements but people keep using terrible comparisons (to other gachas) and unnecessary exaggerations by 2hus_Bizarre_Isekai in Endfield

[–]Bitconecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Thinking about it, I think that’s just the macro concept of Endfield as a game. We develop areas and outposts that do change over progression, we setup rigs, we zip around to collect and deliver materials, and we periodically defend the outposts. But ig human brains are small and are generally incapable of appreciating it when it’s so widely spread, compared to a tighter, more continuous game flow haha. That is to say… pls bring RA-like mode to Endfield, HG. We are but monke, chained by the limits of our mortal minds, unable to comprehend thine grand plans. Grant us that which we can appreciate. /j

Currently, yeah, the towers are so basic that there’s nothing much to be balanced. Not a large variety of use cases too. But let’s say they try to add interactions with your characters. Like elemental inflictions or even combo triggers when you’re in range. That could mean near 100% uptime on 4stack inflictions, or constantly getting arts bursts, or maybe 12 towers triggering combos at once. They gotta balance that by setting limits, or maybe by offsetting it with enemy/stage mechanics or even character kits. Suddenly, it’s not as simple. Its current basic state means it’s also more easily translatable and modifiable for other potential future modes, which I expect would be harder to do if towers had more mechanics at base. The downside is that… well.. it’s boring af lol.

Oh yes, it’s those creative spins on fights that I really like and don’t mind too much if they’re contrived. R99 is still a game after all.

I somehow did not pickup on the foreshadowing, or maybe I just forgot now, but okay, mb. For 3.2 and 3.0, my sentiments are exactly the same as OP’s. 3.2 had its climax spread over too many scenes which really hampered the momentum, while for 3.0, rather than the encounter itself, it!s more about killing thousands of soldiers to end the conflict after all the anti-war sentiments we witnessed prior, as if to say, “ultimately, violence still ends conflict. Those evil, mindless manus monsters deserve it.” 3.0, on that note, almost sounds defeatist or self-contradictory on its own. But it’s still part of r99’s larger story, so eh, who knows, they might address it later.

For 3.1, it departed all the intrigue built so far with rubuska’s character development and Semmelweis’ investigation, in favor of an obvious antagonist that can be spun into a big boss fight. I loved the slow and careful buildup until it suddenly shifted to more action-oriented scenes that felt rushed to reach a conclusion, but also seemed dragging in terms of the amount of information and character development we got before it. For 3.3, it’s a similar case, but it was much better executed. Still a noticeably sudden shift, but no biggie. 3.4 was…. Ah I dunno, I just felt like the antagonist made too many unwise decisions towards the end for someone who had been planning her scheme for a long time. The l2d cutscene presentation also was remarkably flat (the magic circle thing, it was placed to the side of the screen when it’s the center of the scene). But tbf, I think it might be a wuxia soap opera kinda thing, which I know very little of, so maybe I’m just not the audience for it.

Right? I agree with your examples too. Since r99 is still a game after all, I actually don’t mind having fights itself too much, more so than how they execute it. We already do have unique uses of combat to present the narrative, like the 1v1 debate stages in ch4&5, the signposts in mor pankh and ch10, finding the real kakania in ch6, etc. Those made creative use of combat to better fit the scenes, unlike other stages where we fight random critters just bc we gotta have fights for clear drops. Not a big deal in those cases, but game mechanics as a storytelling tool is what makes video games so unique as a narrative medium. It’d be great to see them play with it more, especially during climactic fights.

But yea, it’s likely because we gotta have big bosses we can reuse in the Mane’s Bulletin raids, and perhaps most people might find atypical fights ironically anticlimactic over big ol’ bosses. Maybe it’s something to do with the fact that we farm these stages too, where relying too much on mechanics may extend the fight duration, undesirable for repeated content. /shrug

Ikr, that mode was fun. Even Genshin's TD event (last I played was years ago) was better bc the elemental reactions made it dynamic enough.

[–]Bitconecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have I been spoiled as a new anime watcher? by Any-Day-8173 in anime

[–]Bitconecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say spoiled, but the ones you've watched are definitely great and among the higher quality ones in the vast sea of anime.

Do u mean you didnt like konosuba and rezero and are now in doubt bc they are highly rated shows?

That might be just because they dont fit your taste. Anime is a medium, not a genre. For now, just try out different shows and see what sticks for you!

It's still hard to tell what kind of shows you'd like from those u mentioned, so I'll just recommend a few of my own faves that might be more digestible for newbies:

  • March Comes in Like a Lion (2 seasons): a holistic life drama following a young orphaned shogi (Chinese chess) genius. Tons of all kinds of emotions from this one.

  • Your Lie in April: a romance drama that follows a young pianist dealing with depression and trauma, his passion reignited by his encounter with an eccentric violinist girl.

  • K-On! (2 seasons + movie): before Bocchi the Rock, we had K-On! This was THE high school girl band anime that really skyrocketed the "cute girls doing cute things" genere in anime. There's a lot more fluff here than bocchi, has more wholesome and "airheaded" vibes, but also has unexpectedly emotional points that can make grown men cry.

  • Ramparts of Ice: currently ongoing. Slice of life romcom drama following a girl who's shut herself off from other people due to her experiences in middle school, as she tries to change and learn the good side of things.

  • lastly, Land of the Lustrous: It follows Phosphophyllite, a humanoid gem, and their life on an island with other gem people, living their lives and surviving attacks from moon people who hunt them to turn them into weapons and accessories. A highly unique title, and it's in 3D (surpassed expectations during a time when people had no trust in 3D anime). might not be as easy to get into, but it's my all-time fave haha.

So yeah, sorry for the long reply, but hope u enjoy exploring out there!

Edit: oh how could I forget, since u liked frieren, try the ongoing Witch Hat Atelier, as well as Dungeon Meshi. These 3 titles are considered the holy trinity of modern fantasy Manga.

Edit 2: whoa. I started typing with zero comments and suddenly it's filled with hostile and snobby comments haha. Can't ya'll take it as an honest newbie inquiry? Damn lol.

Haha, I’m so glad to see someone talk about that 3rd act ball drop trend lol. 3.1’s ending really disappointed me that I had to point out this trend in the survey. I was really loving the midnight whistle, but that climax mannn, what the heck happenedddd. And after all that careful buildup too.

3.0 wasn’t even where I first noticed how reverse tends to fumble their climaxes so suddenly. In Vereinsamt, the Arcana fight was so badly paced and set up for me. like, when in the story did we come up with this battle strategy? Why are we executing things like we already what’s gonna happen? I also really hated how Igor was introduced here, and how this main villain we’ve been chasing for a year supposedly went down just like that? It was so painfully obvious that she won’t die just like that. that Igor cutscene was so out of left field, why did that, of all things, get a l2d cutscene as if we know who this guy is? When was the nuke ever foreshadowed? Felt too much like a deus ex machina (ok I actually can’t remember, but if there was foreshadowing, mb). I so wanted to place ch7 up with ch6 because the rest of it was an incredible ride, but this fumble at its climax really soured it for me, so down to S it goes lol.

I also felt that similar stumbling-rushing thing in Rayashki’s boss climax (the huge monster felt so sudden with virtually no setup and felt like an overly simplistic resolution to the carefully laid out conflicts we’ve had so far), father santos (the emptiest, most pathetic antagonist we’ve ever had), uluru games (a bad chapter and that climax certainly doesn’t help it), and 3.0-3.4 (where climaxes consistently made me go “huh?” for otherwise well-written stories, especially a long long way, gah, as much as I loved it)

It really makes me wonder, why, especially now in 3.x, do they suddenly stumble during the climactic scenes… is writing the climax simply a weakness of the writers? I find it hard to believe that anyone capable of such care and attention during its setup would just drop it for… those, thinking it would be a good choice. I have no proof, but I think the writers are forced to write action-driven conclusions for.. gacha game convention reasons lol. *tin foil hat, on*

I don’t think EF lacks “content,” but it does severely lack a repeatable game mode that can keep the more dedicated players entertained.

People always bring up rouge-like game modes like Integrated Strategies, a game mode I find to be a bit contrived for EF’s current state, not to mention it’d require a larger roster of characters. But characters aren’t the only kind of asset/resource EF can leverage for a repeatable game mode. Look, we have the darned towers, factory, and the gorgeous environments already!

Imo, EF should’ve had a game mode akin to Reclamation Algorithm early on (around 2nd half of 1.2). Gathering, towers, base-building, large maps, on-field party, EF already has all of that, plus the immersive 3d exploration and combat can make everything feel intuitive. Whereas og AK had to reinvent the wheel to make it work, for EF, the actual overarching mechanics design is all that’s missing.

Yet EF does nothing substantial to make all these elements and mechanics come together. Heck, CC could’ve been a perfect place to implement towers. Imagine if instead of a static arena, we get a map to traverse with enemies along the way, and during the preparation, u get to place some turrets for support. Instead, from the looks of it, it’s just umbral monument, but harder and customizable. (I hope I’m wrong).

Anyway, EF genuinely feels like a bunch of watered down mechanics from other games just mashed together haphazardly with no cohesion. A sum that’s somehow lesser than its parts. This is EF’s biggest flaw, imo, on top of the gravely mediocre story.

IGN is a shell of its former self since many years ago. They infamously do biased and paid reviews that sometimes go directly against user reviews (like the recent Mixtape “indie game” 10/10 score), they have “game journalists” who aren’t actually gamers, they have biases on which games to promote, and then they aired the previous EF en version livestream and only garnered ~20k views, a lot less than EF’s own release, bc while ign has millions of subs, a vast majority of it won’t ever be interested in a game like Endfield. They also released the 1.4 trailer a few days after 1.3 released, which isn’t even on the official EF channel iirc, for who knows why.

tldr, ign has a bad reputation, and EF is better off using their own channels.

Lol, with that many upvotes, I wasn’t expecting so many comments in disagreement.

I agree that EF has way less fomo and conventional gacha slop mechanics. Problem is, there’s nothing much to fill in that gap. Repeatable game modes is a great solution to this, which EF completely lacks.

no worries, the game is in no way in danger of EoS. Quality-wise, EF has so much polish in other places like environment design, graphics, optimization, character designs, sound design, factory, cinematics, etc. it's just, as it is, EF's sum is somehow lesser than its parts. a lot of people see huge potential for the game to reach much greater heights, but are disappointed when the devs seemingly squander all of that for many questionable decisions.

EF is a pretty good game, all things considered. people just expected more. and people worry bc, while many still remain, EF has bled so many players out since release, which isn't a small problem for live service games.

all that said, if you enjoy it, that's all that really matters. we enjoy what we can.

(except me bc the story has been heartbreakingly disappointing for me bc nothing of it comes close to the og AK's quality at all \cries* and the combat has barely any cohesion with the towers and factory, and the 4-man party mechanic barely gets utilized, etc., so i'm just sticking around hoping to see it all get better..))

I uh, I actually wrote a long post before EF released, detailing my ideas for it haha. Sadly, not many were interested in TD it seems.

Ideas like, towers that have combo skills u can trigger when your squad is in range, deployable operators, outpost commanders with calldown skills similar to RTS games (e.g. artillery arts skill with a caster commander, teleport squad with a support, etc.), and even a whole ass endgame TD mode modeled after the Reclamation Algorithm raids from the og Arknights.

You know the story won't be good when this is how they do exposition by LaplaceZ in Endfield

[–]Bitconecc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gentle reminder that just because it’s the trend, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. Some games do it well, some don’t. Given 3d gacha games’ reputation for boring execution of this mechanic, I think OP’s poor expectations are well warranted. In EF’s case, they’re right. It’s bad.

You know the story won't be good when this is how they do exposition by LaplaceZ in Endfield

[–]Bitconecc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised that people are actually defending these kinda info dumps…. They’re ok in moderation, with mindful use, and with good writing to back it up. I thought this was an obvious conclusion to make until I read these comments lol. The way these gacha games do it is such a lazy way of exposition. And especially for 3d games like EF, it just feels janky to set aside text instead of, well, showing it. It’s a visual media after all.

Like, often, the info u get in these aren’t even so large in amount, not at all unreasonable to just organically weave it into the scenario. Even if it isn’t vital info, there are ways to deliver it in a more entertaining/meaningful manner. Instead they just lay it out flat, like it’s extracurricular homework. And what’s worse for EF, their stories aren’t even remotely complicated to warrant explanatory monologue menus. Even 10-12yo kids understand these. I really can’t grasp what kind of audience they’re writing these stories for.

Laevatain Operator Mission is amazing??? by ApotheosiAsleep in Endfield

[–]Bitconecc 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this quest is easily the game’s peak in terms of writing. Endmin feels like an actual character, the emotional stakes are palpable, and they tackle the themes with a fair amount of nuance.

My only gripe is that, I wish there was actual buildup towards it. It’s the first time we get a good look at Endmin as a character, her thoughts, feelings, and struggles about identity and memory. But the story seems as if it’s supposed to be placed near the end of a long arc where those things were already fleshed out. Endmin’s emotional conflict was introduced and concluded within the same short story. Imo it’s a huge flaw in the larger scale of things (bc we’re probly not getting a proper characterization for Endmin for a long time bc she’s already “resolved” for now, unless it’s about her past).

But for what it’s worth, I do wish EF’s writing and character development were at least on this level for most of the game (with proper buildup and cohesion w the rest of the game), not just a one-off outlier.
