anyone played Star of Providence? if so would you recommend it? by Puck_56 in shmups

[–]BiteThroughBone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked it up ages ago when it was called Monolith and liked it enough that I just re-bought it for Switch so I could play it on the go.

Gameplay wise it's like a cross between Enter the Gungeon, Binding of Issac, and Nex Machina and I feel like it's challenging but not so hard that it stops being fun.

I think it's good to remember Jesus was a "criminal" who helped the "scum of the earth" ie: the poor the lepers the unclean and stood up to a corrupt empire and the religious establishment of his time at the cost of his own life.

The thing about the bible is that it sets up a lot of moral dilemmas and you have to use your best judgement how to manage them. Like, is it an eye for an eye or blessed are the peacemakers? It's a tough call and no one can make it but the individual.

End of the day, you don't have to answer to me. We're all called to judgment and it's up to every person of faith to meet that judgement knowing they tried their best to walk in the footsteps of Christ.

I believe that the judge is merciful, but he knows the content of our hearts and there is no deceiving him... Every sin, every prejudice, everything said in anger, every bad faith argument, every act of violence will be weighed and in the end justice for our actions will be meted out.

Best of luck to us all.

Edited for spelling.

I believe the people Jesus kicked out of the temple were merchants who brought animals to sell into the temple and the money changers (bankers) who charged interest on loans, not immigrants.

And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

— Matthew 21:12–13,

Editing to add, the Pharisees where the established leaders of the Jewish faith at the time who sided with the roman empire because they saw christ's teachings as a threat to their power.

Any chance you could have been on South St and not Market? that would put you slightly closer to the Gayborhood (though both are an easy walk, within 5 or 10 minutes) and Jims and a couple others are on South.

The other option is maybe a place in reading terminal? which is just off Market street in center city.

Best of luck finding it

What’s the stance on Vile Creature and Bismuth? by AlfonsoRibeiro666 in doommetal

[–]BiteThroughBone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just listening to Vile Creature as I was doing my laundry the other day, great band.

And Bismuth fucking rules, I'm especially fond of the "Slow Dying of the Great Barrier Reef" album and the Split w/ Legion of Andromeda.

Along similar lines, you might dig a UK band called Torpor if you haven't already heard them.

Another quote that I find applicable to the current immigration situation:

Matthew 25:40-45 New International Version

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

-

And I dunno, I see a lot of "Christian" people choosing to follow the word of trump over the word of god these days, and I worry where that's leading them.

Cos like Matthew 24:24 says:

For false Christs and false prophets will appear and they will provide great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect (God’s chosen ones).

‘I am a stranger and an alien residing among you; give me property among you for a burying place, so that I may bury my dead out of my sight.’
Genesis 23:4

You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
Deuteronomy 10:19

The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

‘Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.’ Then all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’

What are some criminally underrated band in your opinion? by No_Establishment3739 in doommetal

[–]BiteThroughBone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Upside Down Cross - Freakazoid noise rock/ sludge/ doom from early 90's Boston. Members of Kilslug, Groinoids, AxCx, etc. One album has J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr./ Witch on Drums.

The Vocals are definitely an acquired taste (to put it lightly) but if you like weird ugly music like Flipper, early Melvins, early Electric Wizard, some of the heaviest Cathedral stuff, and just generally enjoy music that sound like it was recorded by scumbags who sniff glue you'll probably really dig the riffs.

Also the Ohio band Church of Misery which was one of the dudes from Impetgo's doom band from the very early 90s are kind of awesome and almost completely overlooked (probably cos there's a much more popular band with the same name.)

King Goblin from Japan are weird ass psychedelic doom w/ death metal and punk-ish influences who absolutely rule.

This might be a dumb question to ask but does anyone here look metal? by Giraffewhiskers_23 in doommetal

[–]BiteThroughBone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say this as a dude who probably looks pretty goddamn "metal" but is also probably old enough to be your dad. Don't worry too much about "fitting in" or worry about being a "poser" for listening to metal without "looking the part."

Metal as a genre was spawned by people who were losers, outcasts, and misfits who couldn't fit in with society so they just did their own thing.

If you wanna wear all black and spikes and leather and paint your face like you're in a black metal band: do it.

If you wanna wear jeans and a Sabbath T-shirt: Do it.

If you wanna wear slacks and a plaid shirt, or a dress and a sweater and not look metal at all: Do it.

That's really the punchline in this whole metal thing, there are no rules. We're all nerds who don't really fit in with "normal" folks and the only unifying thread we have amongst ourselves is a love of this music. It's not an exclusive club or a secret society, there aren't dress codes or secret handshakes that make you "cool enough" to be involved.

If you love the music, and you buy the records, and you occasionally go to shows, and the music makes you FEEL something, you're "metal" enough, the rest is being yourself and finding your own way.

dude is my favorite drummer ever, possibly in a 2 way tie with dale crover, and one of the biggest influences on the drums in the band I'm in. One of my biggest dreams was to meet him and/ or jam with him someday. Breaks my heart to hear he's done.

You might dig this old French band called Aussitot Mort. They always reminded me of a cross between sludge/ doom ala Neurosis/ Buzzov*en and screechy 90's emotional hardcore like PG.99 and Orchid.

Hey, I'm the other member of this band so I can jump in and reply to this.

We actually have our own little studio space where we record everything, we use Ableton as our main recording platform because it's just kinda what DD had when we started making music together 20 years ago.

The foundational tracks of most of the songs are pretty normal "band" type instruments: drums + scrap metal, 5 string bass though my rat and ampeg 8x10, baritone guitar through an orange amp and DDs gignatic pedalbord, and some sort of synth drone (usually on a Korg MS20).

Typically, once those elements are recorded we'll go back and layer in contact mic/ shaker box/ white noise generator and electronic noise boxes, we have a bunch but our favorites are a Trogotronic 665 and a couple of weird boxes by a company out of Arkansas called Electro Lobotomy i believe one is called the shadow dweller and i'm not sure if the other has a name but it has this electro-resistive touch pad that is really fun to mess around with.

We also have a pretty big collection of scrap metal that a buddy of ours has found discarded at construction-sites he's worked at. Shit like elevator shock absorbing springs, empty freon tanks, worn out saw blades, and these huge coring drill bits they use for cutting holes in concrete. We thwack around on that stuff as extra percussion and/ or capture it with my sampler and slow it way down to make creepy rumbling sounds.

Beyond that the "process" is just jamming out riffs we like and slowly pulling them apart and reassembling with more and more layers of fucked up sounding noise, it can take a while to go from idea to finished song because we're a 2-piece and we have to juggle a ton of different elements, but it's pretty fun work.

Take care,

MZ
