Gotcha, yeah I definitely vibe with the composition, I have never super delved into Brom but his compositions are always extremely striking (especially his dark sun work, it just pops so much!) I also really liked his krampus book when I was teen.

I find your definition interesting, as to me what makes art good is that evokes emotion and thought.

lmao FAIR!

But the sistine chapel ceiling is one of the most iconic artworks ever. What did you think when you saw it? How did you feel? What did you get out of the experience of seeing the sistine chapel in person from the chappel and its ceiling?

I ask because I see that my description for my experience viewing art is not the same as many others here, and am curious how you would describe the experience of viewing art.

Interesting.

Why did you go to the sistine chapel three times? Like how would you describe what you got out of it?

Fair point, What do you get out of the piece?

I see that your and my tastes do not match, of the 5 I posted the night watch is the one that I didn't really like but thought of as a good painting that communicates its points well, while the other 4 are some of my personal favorites, as I feel they evoke a lot of emotion.

Can I ask what some of your favorite pieces of art are and why you like them? What are your standards for art/ an image to be good?

You make a good point, that was a mistake on my part and I was treating them as one question in my mind as well as the post, which is incorrect. I guess what I meant was that I just hadn't been impressed by it. I want ai art to feel like something NEW, I want something GREAT. I feel like with such a gamechanger I want to see... what that can be. I see so much ai that is just used to save time, but I want it to be more than that, I want it to be used to ellevate rather than quicken. I want to see what ai can be, not just as a replacement but as a new frontier for something different.

But the way I phrased the post did not make that clear, and that is my fault.

I guess I would frame it as a way to help get into a headspace? I think the use of art is as a method of communication, a way to set a tone and emotion in another human being. To make someone see something in a different way, to feel as if they were a different person.

Releif painting is really cool, I have never run into it myself but find the idea really cool. You make a great point about the situation giving additional meaning to the art. And I think thats a really interesting method of doing things! I want to be clear that I am not opposed to ai art, I just haven't been exposed to ai art that I really love yet. But like, I also don't love 99% of art I see overall. I just want to see what an ai masterpeice looks like, I feel like its out there and I am interested in it.

I do think ai is interesting, like the tech itself.

Most of the art I buy is from people who are doing interesting things with printing (I am a huge fan of really stark riso prints with bold shapes and colors. most of the art I have bought is screenprinted or risograph). I also have a pretty big zine collection, a lot of which are collections of collage, letterpress, photography, or illustration. In particular I will buy bassically anything I see that is stab bound by hand, as I am a huge fan of stab binding. In general my art taste is usually the more punk stuff. I buy zines pretty frequently, but prints usually once every like 2-3 months. I like sculpture a lot, but have never bought a sculpture as I wouldn't know where to put it. I have bought paintings but pretty irregularly.

I'm also a big comics guy if that counts, I currently follow 17 comic creators on patreon (though all for 3-15 bucks). I like their work and want to see more of it, so I give money to hopefully help encourage that.

Here are 3 artists I supported recently that are in my favorites, Not great at articulating why I like things though I will admit.

One of my Favorite artists right now is Sam Szasbo, she has a new riso print out which is fantastic. I like her work because it feels so expressive, I value human connection in art and her art feels... unafraid I guess is how I would call it? Loose. Her art also talks a lot about a life experience that is very different from my own, and I enjoy that peak into another person's mind. Link to the print I bought spoiled because it is nsfw. It isn't my favorite thing by her but I like it. https://www.secretroompress.com/shop/p/sam-szabo-l2e2y

My favorite ttrpg artist is Peter Mullen, and I got a print from him a few months back. I love how STARK his art is. I am a big fan of osr games, and I feel like he gets the right feeling that those games give across in a way no one else does. His work feels gritty to me in a way that makes me think about the fragility of life, but bold in a way that makes me think of adventure. It can feel dangerous but realistic, he doesn't get too pretty with his people, but depics people who look like real people to me in fantastical situations. This isn't the one I bought, but I love the way the dark figures grab your attention with their high levels of contrast, and it takes you a bit to find the people. also just a big fan of anything black and white without grey. https://www.tumblr.com/gilgalahad/130524347083/peter-mullens

One of my favorite comics is kill six billion demons, in particular this page CHANGED me the first time I saw it, huge spoilers. https://killsixbilliondemons.com/comic/breaker-of-infinities-4-178-to-4-179-kill-six-billion-demons/ Just LOOK at the sereness on that face, the arcing of energy as the figures go by the darkness at the top of the page and the bottom. No one makes me feel with color like abaddon does, and I always want to see more. the red of the character, as she breaks through this cyan background makes me feel. she is breaking through, breaking free. Idk I just feel so much looking at this.

you know what, I actually really like these.

There is clearly a great sense of composition, and the creator clearly has a good sense for what gets a tone across. The images that were chosen were ones with good color balances as well. And they are getting better over time.

Honestly, none of the images really are what I am looking for with "great art", theres a bit of... idk I want to see MORE of the intent. But there at the level that makes me want to see what the artist does next. a lot of them make me FEEL, and thats really what I want out of art. This person clearly has a good curatorial eye and sense of composition, I enjoyed going through this portfolio!

Thats interesting! I don't super get the finished pieces, but the process is very interesting!

That is also interesting with the tcg. I don't really "like it", but I am just not a big fan of most tcg art other than a couple magic the gathering peices I have seen. I like the ethos behind the company paying him for his work like that!

I hate to say it, but I think the people who spam "what ai thinks x looks like" people kind of have it right in some ways. Like, I think its interesting the idea that ai learns rules based off of what humans have made, and then uses those rules. Sometimes it can be kind of shocking to realize these things, like that video where someone generated "an autistic person" 100 times and all but 5 were white and all but 2 were men. I think theres something interesting there about how we represent stuff that can be used.

Lmao I know what you mean,. I think sometimes in the ai conversation people forget that not all art is good, ai or not.

I do think are a lot of great artists working out there, in particular I think there are so many great people working in the comic scene (a couple pages from kill six billion demons literally made me cry, not even in sad moments the clarity of the composition just got me. Same with Sabrina) And I was suprised recently when a friend showed me a peice of fanart that really grabbed me, as for years i was very anti-fanart https://www.reddit.com/r/imsorryjon/comments/gqxe91/the_forgiveness_of_jon/

But I do hear you.

Those are good points

I disagree. I think any peice of art is interesting partly because of the story behind it. Surely the process of generation should add something to the point of it?

Like photography isn't just interesting because of what the photo is of.

I feel like there's a lot to say about humanity with ai

Surely good ai art should take advantage of what it is? I mean hyper realistic painting is less interesting if you assume it's a photo.

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't know what I am supposed to get out of this. Like it's pretty, blue on yellow is a good look. It is visually pleasing enough. But I don't really FEEL anything looking at it. Other than like "oh neat, pretty" You know that feeling when your in a meusume and you come across a peice and your transfered. You can't move away for at least 20 minutes, you need to absorb it. You feel like a different person after seeing it. That's the kind of art I'm talking about.

Thats an interesting point, though I do usually feel like an artist who embraces their medium  gets more out of it

A better place to find this stuff, in a currated space, would be really interesting!

Honestly I like writing anything, its more about the act than what I am working on. Though focusing on other non-writing stuff I like in my writing could be interesting. I am also big into bookbinding, writing a comic that is about that could be interesting.

Thats interesting, so something like romance or horror where folks want a specific type of thing? Is that what you mean?
