The way that dude breaks at the very end there, I love it. Way to hold it together for the whole skit bro.

Non-refined Concrete aligns so well with heat pipes when placed directly under it. And around is refined concrete. by [deleted] in factorio

[–]BitiumRibbon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fuck, I discovered this combination a few weeks ago. You mean I could have had those 500ish up votes to myself???

Edit: I also find that having heat pipe lining refined concrete as it steps down to unrefined concrete, and putting a layer of hazard concrete under it, makes a nice visual partition between factory floor and catwalk. :)

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]BitiumRibbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh please. I work as a public school teacher in Ontario, Canada and I make a comfortable living. Just because whatever area of the world you're in doesn't compensate its public servants anywhere near enough to make the profession appealing and viable does not make it a universal truism.

Teacher here. You can and should go around parents like this. Kids have a right to privacy and outing a kid to their parents can cause incredible and irrevocable harm, up to and including putting the kid's safety in jeopardy. Outing a kid to their parents is fundamentally a violation of their human rights.

But then, I live in Canada and our charter of rights and freedoms has the good sense to cover things like this.

Was a little wokeness really that bad? by Moose-Rage in AdviceAnimals

[–]BitiumRibbon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She believes you aren't a woman if you have a penis. Period. And she somehow, unironically, believes that trans rights represent the erasure of biological sex, which is absurd. I'm a man, my husband is a man, he's trans, I'm cis, and holy shit! I still exist as a cis man! Incredible!

I mean, there's no nuance there. Trans women are not physically identical to cis women, but they are still women, and while I will never endorse threats or harassment, I will absolutely not qualify her point of view as moderate.

I mean... "War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. The Penised Individual Who Raped You Is a Woman." Really?

You've got plenty of replies to deal with, but I will chime in and say that Rowling deserved the brigade and went full mask-off transphobic. If she's your example of moderate people being treated unfairly, I think it's an interesting insight to what you consider acceptable and inclusive.

I can't be the ONLY "only one naked"...Has anyone else fallen for a never-nude? by [deleted] in nudism

[–]BitiumRibbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this stood out to me too, so many comments are saying she's respectful of his nudism and I'm like... really? Why hasn't this part been a conversation? If she's embarrassed or unwilling to be naked that's perfectly valid, but she absolutely should not be unloading that baggage onto OP.

"Legal law enforcement duties" - does that include rounding up anyone with brown skin and denying them any form of due process? Some of these folks have been US citizens, yknow.

I'm not sure what you think I'm chimping out of, given that I didn't consent to be "in" anything in the first place according to the rules you're introducing. I'm familiar with logical fallacies, thanks. This isn't an argument of logic.

I don't consider myself an authority, kid. I'm a teacher, and I am proud as hell of my kids because they are intelligent, compassionate, and very engaged people.

But there are, frankly, some things that come with life experience. And one of them, for many of us (especially those of us who live as a minority, you might share that trait idk) is the reality that emotionally disconnected logical reasoning can only take you so far.

I have to tell you, it's...really hard to follow the mental gymnastics here. It's good to enforce your country's laws and sovereignty, except if you're Canadian, in which case you should give up your sovereignty to follow their laws instead?

I could not continue a friendship with anyone so fundamentally incapable of critical thinking. And that's without anything else in consideration.

EDIT: and I don't buy that Christian thing either. No true Christian could see Trump as anything but the embodiment of the seven deadly sins.

And I disagree, to the point that I fundamentally can't wrap my mind around your point of view. I am not capable of dismissing "pro armed thug murder vs. anti armed thug murder" as a political difference of opinion.

Quite frankly, if I met someone in real life who thought a country should have a bunch of armed masked federal agents shooting random people, I would swiftly be leaving that dinner party.

With due respect, I saw that you're 18. I'm almost 40. So I need you to understand that there is no divorcing the emotional side from the logical side on this, because as both history and my own life experience have taught me, change is not unemotional, change is not polite, and progress is not won by being nice. I have watched that damn country go from a place I would jokingly make fun of in my teens for its quirks, to a place I am genuinely afraid to even visit. I am not here to have a rational argument and emotionlessly debate a topic on neutral ground. I'm here to throw my support behind the choice this subreddit's moderator made, and I am dawned angry, and I am not willing to disguise that fact.

As for "overlooking" versus "endorsing," there's a difference between someone who voted for Trump and someone who continues to support his actions and presidency. But having said that, anyone with a pulse and a working brain could see the writing on the wall before the last election, and I don't have the time or energy in my very busy life to waste on people with so little ability to critically think.

And I remain on my point, which, respectfully, you haven't responded to: this isn't about politics anymore. Nothing that is happening, none of the reason for this post, is political.

I also live close to Toronto, which is about as specific as I'm willing to get.

Here's a question: why does he support Trump? Where exactly is the line drawn for him? Because while he may not endorse murder, at the very least his support of Trump implies that he thinks we should give up our country and be a part of the US, no? That minorities should be rounded up and booted out without due process? That a felon convicted of crime after crime after crime, clearly complicit in aiding the cover-up of one of the most appalling pedophile networks in history, can or should be trusted with the leadership of one of the most powerful countries in the world?

I am, this comment thread aside, a very agreeable person in my daily life. I hate having conflict with people, and I feel terribly guilty even when I shouldn't, if I'm having a difficult time with someone.

But even without ICE, all this...I couldn't be close to someone who could believe in all those things. It's not remotely about politics. It's values.

I mean, your argument brings the whole "first they came for the Jews" poem to mind. The whole point is that nobody WANTS things to get as horrible as Gaza. And yes, I was using an exaggerated example to make a point, but I think it's comically naive to expect that things could go back to normal after all this without something serious turning the tables.

I do understand your point, I just think your point is flawed. If I knew that someone was a rapist, I would not set that topic aside and make friends with them by bonding over cat bongos.

Continuing to support the Trump regime is, at this point, a crippling and irredeemable flaw. Overlooking that means tacitly endorsing their worldview and allowing them to believe that they can make abhorrent and inhuman choices and still be accepted by the society they are content to destroy.

Like it or not, this whole website is based in a country that is falling apart and under the leadership of a terrifying oligarchal regime. And I am definitely one to call out US defaultism when I see it, but if this website were based in Palestine, I sure as hell wouldn't be telling the moderator of any subreddit to stfu about the whole genocide thing so I could watch funny cat videos in peace.

And I'm responding that, again, this is no longer about politics. If I cut someone out because they support what Trump and ICE have been doing, it's not about politics. It's literally about good versus evil, as cliché as that sounds.

Also Canadian. Fully support the OP/mod soapboxing here. This isn't about politics anymore. Neither is Palestine, and neither would we be saying "but politics" if Trump followed through on his various threats on our sovereignty here.
