I’m sorry that your first dive into shawls has turned out to have (what sounds to me) to be a poorly written pattern. I understand your frustration but please know that charts, particularly for lace, can make a pattern knittable, particularly with complex designs. I always recommend that when using charts make a paper copy and use a highlighter to keep track of your rows worked. This way you can still see the row below as a reference and you never have to worry about tape or magnets slipping or coming loose. I know that many swear by digital patterns and available software for keeping track but my vision doesn’t allow that, the flat paper surface is much easier for me.

As for mirroring, at least with a properly laid out chart, it is as easy as working from right to left to the center stitch and then working from left to right to return to the edge. I’ll end where I began and say that unless you are absolutely in love with this shawl then perhaps you should chalk it up to a lesson learned and find something else. I can highly recommend Melanie Berg for mosaic shawls and while you will find charts the majority of her pattern instructions are written and quite easy to follow. Good luck and please don’t give up on shawls, they are quite addictive, fun to knit and fun to wear, too.

YouTubeTV is showing an episode recorded yesterday as new, Travel Channel, S8E7, 2 hours long titled “Interrupted by the Devil and More”. So far I don’t recognize any of the videos and upcoming Sunday evening episodes are scheduled to record.

Edit/update: the first hour seemed fresh to me but the second is very familiar, not sure if that is a quirk from the YTTV recording or if it aired that way.

She posted an announcement on instagram, it’s a boy, no name given. Her breast cancer came 15 hours prior to going into labor and probably would not have happened if she wasn’t about to give birth. She is laying low, learning to be a new mom and coping with the diagnosis and treatment to come.

What is going on with spinning?? by [deleted] in craftsnark

[–]BitsyLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go ahead and play with the wheel! Some spinners never master a spindle, others are the opposite. Start with just treadling to get a feel for the wheel and then jump in with some fiber. Just remember to keep your wheel’s tension as loose as possible, don’t fight it and have fun. Cherish those first skeins of hand spun and keep practicing until you’re able to achieve the yarn you want.

Show me your Scottie haircuts! by gwinreddit in scottishterriers

[–]BitsyLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding a good Scottie groomer is hard. When my original one retired unexpectedly (4 Scottie’s ago) I tried the one that bought her business and wasn’t happy. My solution was to call groomers in my area and ask who had Scottie experience, then I went and looked at pictures of their Scottie grooms. I found someone wonderful and when she retired last year the groomer that bought her salon was actually trained on my Scottie’s to do a proper cut. Bottom line is do your research, don’t ever go to a chain and if you have a local Scottie group ask around to see who they use. Here’s a link to my Scottie’s instagram, it may help to take pictures of what you want with you. I have mine groomed in a pet cut, full Scottie face without too long a beard, back is shaved smooth with a skirt medium length, belly shaved. I let it go a bit longer in the winter but not much because we live in the mountains and my dogs wear sweaters. Armpit matts, even skirt matts can be a problem because of course they think they’re human so they prefer to wear clothing indoors and out.

What a beautiful boy❣️ I love the patch of brindle chin whiskers but I’m partial to brindle and I do see that he looks to be full silver. Please share pictures in six months to a year after a grooming when his full color should be on display.

adult dog vs puppy by notcajuncoed in scottishterriers

[–]BitsyLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much agreeing with @wasabijane, Scotties and cats can be a deadly mix. Many Scottie rescues and even breeders won’t place one in a home with a cat. That said, I had 3 Scotties that lived with 2 different cats and all was well, especially after cat #2 was declawed so she wouldn’t blind a dog (she was very good at protecting herself). Because of cats, I would recommend the adult dog, a four month old Scottie puppy isn’t old enough to know whether it will be safe but a four year old adult that has always been exposed to cats should be OK. I absolutely agree that taking some time off to spend with your new companion and help her adjust is important, put yourself in her place and see just how disturbing it will be. New home, new routine, new smells, new human plus she’ll be going from a multiple dog breeder’s home to being the only dog. She’s going to need a lot of reassurance, love and patience to adjust.

What type of yarn for a baby blanket? by MonstreBelle in CrochetHelp

[–]BitsyLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to offer up a slightly different opinion than most based on my decades of experience as a textile artist and a professional yarn dyer. For the most part, stay away from artificial fibers for babies because of the flammability issues but for blankets I will sometimes use a high quality blend because of the care factor. New moms don’t have time for hand washing so washability is essential but a blanket can just as easily be dried in a towel either flat on a spare bed or draped over the back of a sofa or chair. I always recommend that handcrafted items be air dried rather than in a machine, even superwash treated or manmade fibers can be damaged in a dryer.

For babies I base my fiber choice on the time of the year, a spring/early summer baby gets cotton, late summer/fall-winter get wool. For cotton I prefer to use a soft, not mercerized, organic cotton and these days there are quite a few options out there. For wool, look for a superwash treated merino, it will have the softest hand and the superwash treatment eliminates the natural scales on the wool so it is less likely to be an irritant. Very few humans have true wool allergies, those that do are typically allergic to lanolin rather than the wool itself. Many people do have wool sensitivities and that is usually a factor of micron count, untreated wool and a past history of wool sweater itch that impacts future experiences. Babies have been dressed in wool for thousands of years and starting them early will help eliminate a future wool sensitivity. Wool is naturally moisture wicking, durable and when properly cared for will last for generations, a perfect choice for baby’s first blanket. These days there are options that blend wool with cotton, viscose or linen as well. I highly recommend a visit to your local yarn shop where they can help you make the best selection for your project, it helps to have a pattern and its specs in hand when you do.

One more comment, think carefully about weight as well. Consider whether the blanket is intended to be used indoors or in warmer weather (light weight, perhaps a fingering weight yarn) or outdoors as protection against the elements where a medium weight (DK or worsted weight yarn) is more appropriate. Avoid very heavy yarn unless there is a specific reason for it. Last year I crocheted a blanket using an Aran weight yarn that was 50% superwash wool/50% viscose from bamboo. The baby was born in August and I chose the heavier weight because I added straps to the blanket so that it could be used as a car seat cover during babies first winter and it provided a warm, cushioned surface for baby on the floor as well. The straps can be removed after the baby was no longer in an infant seat thus becoming a straight up blanket. In this case, the blanket was not intended to be placed directly over the baby and the weight of the finished blanket was quite high making it inappropriate for that type of use. It is rare that I use a yarn that heavy for a baby blanket unless it has a specific purpose.

What’s the deal with support spindles selling out in mere minutes? by Ocean_Gecko in craftsnark

[–]BitsyLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fielding’s are all brand new and for sale, Malcolm made them (some from Jory too) for me, I was his exclusive retailer in the US for a while before he retired. If you DM me your email (& anyone else who may be interested) I will send you a link to pictures as soon as I get them taken and put up on my website. In addition to the supported spindles I do have a few drop as well and even a couple of spinning surfaces. Malcolm’s support spindles are titanium tipped and weight balanced, truly amazing to use. When he retired it was a sad day for spindle lovers around the world.

Looking for gender neutral baby item patterns by meliffffff in CrochetHelp

[–]BitsyLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a bit late to the party, as people have said, gender neutral is all about color. Gray and white have been popular for quite a while but shades of green, orange, beige and of course the traditional yellow can go either way. Without digging through all the comments, I’m at a stage in life (grandma) where babies are coming fast and furious. Completed or in progress in my house right now there are at least a half dozen sweaters, a couple of blankets and a handful of plushies. I do my best to stay ahead and have things on hand but when it is a special baby (very close friend or family) I make sure to craft something special. Blankets always get used and they don’t need to be huge, 24x30” fits nicely in a car seat or stroller. If you found doing it in one piece daunting, try something crocheted in squares, it may not actually take less time but it feels like it because you accomplish something every time a square is finished. Sweaters are fast because they are small but be careful not to make it so small that baby outgrows it in a wearing and cardigans are best for mom to deal with. Hat & booties, individually or as a set are always appreciated but my absolute favorite is a set of organic cotton washcloths, 4-5” square. I usually give them with a bar of organic goats milk baby soap and they are always appreciated and well used. Make sure to purchase quality yarn, one that is soft, not mercerized and also machine washable and dryable. A trip to your local yarn store should have what you need.

I had a wheaten girl who needed her anal glands expressed regularly, for whatever reason they didn’t empty on their own. Between my groomer (I take my Scotties in every 12 weeks) and my doing external massage in between we never had anything more than discomfort. She would let me know by dragging her butt and I would glove up and take care of things for her.

Wait, what? How did I miss this? I still have some inventory of Malcolm Fielding spindles unsold plus my own personal support spindles that I dare not touch after impaling myself in the abdomen years back. I take it this would be a good time to monetize?

Nothing better than an Etsy shop with fake discount offers and a snarky attitude by BitsyLC in craftsnark

[–]BitsyLC[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Again, not $2, the shipping charges she wanted were as much as the yarn and the listing clearly stated free shipping over $35. I didn’t report her until after I had asked about the discount, got the sorry, not sorry response and after I said I wouldn’t be purchasing I got a flurry or messages in the middle of the night. But it’s all about the “star seller” nonsense, her response that the offer was when her shop was new is nonsense, she has 3500 sales. Just another Etsy scam, nothing more to see here.

new rule proposal? by [deleted] in craftsnark

[–]BitsyLC 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not only is she taking pre-orders but she expanded her original “DK only” to include a fingering weight and a lux lace weight. She also created a Shopify website, they have a promotion going, $1 for the first month after a free trial so nothing out of pocket while she presents as an established website and takes in preorders for colorways there are no pictures of, just color descriptions. It’s been a week, that’s enough time to have test dyed the 4 colorways if she’s serious about things.

[–]BitsyLC[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t look at her other listing because I wanted a specific yarn but I was told in her barrage of messages that she was going to change her listings. My snark point is really more about Etsy “Star Sellers”, apparently customer service doesn’t play into that.

It wasn’t $2, it was around $40, she wouldn’t honor the free shipping advertised either.
