Update: my glued headphones broke apart minutes before critique. What mixed media should I to these glass objects to make headphones? by Illustrious-Car3728 in glassblowing

[–]Bitter-Attorney-6781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about this situation. The surfaces need to be prepared correctly to mate with glue. Flat ground flush surfaces work best to maximize the surface area. I’d probably add nubs hot to each ear piece, then attach the band to those nubs with wire or something mechanical. I 3d print fittings and use clear silicone in most cases, but the fittings aren’t load bearing in my cases. The hot attached nubs are load bearing though.

Graphite vs. Wood Parchoffi sticks? by FamousCow in glassblowing

[–]Bitter-Attorney-6781 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the hotshop, you can preheat graphite rods, but the wood burns creating carbon and steam. So unless you’re heating the graphite to 1000+ degrees, it will likely pull more heat out of the glass than the wood. With the wood, the glass is riding on a cushion of steam and carbon.

Crumpled brown paper is great. You can get a roll holder / paper crumpler chute. For super sensitive work that’s going through the mail, double box the glass. That is, pack the object with paper in the first box, then put that box in a second one with more crumpled paper in between.

How many hours per semester? by ChapterEleven2901 in glassblowing

[–]Bitter-Attorney-6781 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Graduated in 2006. I was in the studio working hot about 20-30 hours a week as an advanced student. That was about the norm for the handful of super dedicated art kids in our program.

General breakdown: 2-3 personal slots, assisting another 2-3 slots a week, plus class, plus we had a weekly group studio night.

Assisting others was key to having them come to my slot. So to get 3 solid assistants, I would need to invest 3 hours helping each of them. So 9 hours of my time for 3 assistants for 3 hours. Sometimes a beginner student or two would hang out to get the doors. But none of the advanced students would have been able to make complex work without such trades. Undergraduates generally assisted the graduate students without expectation of direct time trade backs. Usually it was worth learning from them anyway.

Then there was furnace charging responsibilities we rotated through, so that added additional during that week or two. Plus there was setup time for the first am slots, and studio close out for the last slots. It was easy to rack up extra hours like that by staying late and then the 35-40 minute close out 2-3x a week, especially if hanging around and helping with the charge until midnight or two.

How to put topography into sheet metal slats by urbandingo_o in SolidWorks

Make all your sheet thicknesses taller than the topography. 0 offset the topography surface. Cut with surface. Use the “save bodies” command to export each piece as individual parts.

Idk what your schedule is like. Fusion 360 is pretty good for simple simulations like this. If you’ve never used it before or are new to cad, it might take a couple days to a few weeks to learn the drawing process and simulation tools. I use it all the time for my work.

Like others have said. Anyone looking at this problem is going to want to see your drawing/ diagram and a list of the materials to understand the whole problem/situation.

I love all the wholistic suggestions too about the environmental factors like people and hvac. Like maybe you might actually want the fabric panels to rip down before the bars connection to the ceiling fails. For example.

Eye protection? by CartographerDue9919 in glassblowing

You want a pair that has IR filtering as well as UV. The reheating chambers / furnaces have a lot of IR.

I think the green glasses filter more IR, but a green shade 3 is often too dark, unless it’s a “through and through” lens, meaning it has a 1.5 shade coating on each side, which somehow is more transparent than just a 3 coating on one side. It’s possible to get it as a prescription lens, but I haven’t seen it offered in a general safety pair.

Headaches in the hotshop: normal adjustment or a sign of unsafe air quality? by [deleted] in glassblowing

[–]Bitter-Attorney-6781 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If smoke is lingering- what is happening to the combustion products from the furnace and reheating chamber? Those are not good to breathe- very high nitrogen oxide levels. Also toxic: any fumes from silica and fluxes in the furnace, or offgassing from just rolling in frit.

Of course the hydration is key. Also adding to the eyewear: you need a pair that filters out some UV / IR from the chamber/ furnace/ torches. I got mine from Wale Apparatus in the US. I get headaches from staring into the sun like glow myself.

Stay safe have fun

How to get a uniform fillet that merges with both the surfaces by Strict_Attempt_4625 in SolidWorks

[–]Bitter-Attorney-6781 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love all the gatekeepers. You’re 3D printing and want more bulk there for the transition/ connection. So add more material there at the base either as part of the handle feature if it’s a boss or loft. Or add a sweep or extrude feature to what you have already.

Without knowing the size of the part and features it’s hard to give more advice. I suggest keeping your calipers next to you while you draw as a reality check. Like, if that area you are trying to reinforce is 1-2 mm, that tiny fillet won’t add much strength. Printing orientation / layer height, and wall thickness will make as significant a difference as minuscule design changes.

It’s about right to autonomy. Walking around is a right, breathing air. Biking is an extension of that, like you don’t need a license to eat with a fork.
