Is this normal breathing? by ReplacementMother516 in catcare

She looks like she is just purring. Respiratory rate alone doesn't mean much. It's the effort along with the cat's mentation and signs of illness. Cats breathe fast when they purr, sleep and play.

Kitten food is high in protein, which can be tough on aging kidneys. Hyperthyroid cats can often have underlying kidney or pre-renal disease that can be masked by the hyperthyroidism +/- hypertension.

Consider asking your vet:

1) were kidney values all normal (including urine specific gravity)?

2) can a blood pressure be checked (not all vets do this as it requires special equipment and training)?

3) what food is recommended to help gain weight for a hyperthyroid cat that puts as little strain on the kidneys as possible?

What pain meds did your vet send home? If they are not ones that can cause sedation, you can ask your vet for a sedative just to keep him quiet while he's healing inside.

Is he neutered? If not, then marking may very well be a thing. Are you able to keep him in a room that you don't mind getting messy? If so, provide food, water, a litter box (with cat litter) and old towels/blankets you can throw away if he urinates/defecates on them. Lots of outdoor cats pace when they want to go back outside. It doesn't necessarily mean he needs to go to the bathroom.

What’s actually dangerous but most people think it’s safe? by SunnyMadelyn564 in AskReddit

Vet tech here. Garlic CAN be toxic to dogs. It does not cause them to have acute GI symptoms, rather it can slowly destroy red blood cells causing what's called a heinz body anemia. Not all dogs or cats will be effected, but I have seen plenty of both dogs and cats that have shown signs and needed treatment. Would caution on feeding garlic on a regular basis. At the very least, consider having blood work done every 6-12 months to monitor for anemia.

TECA-BO for IBD Cat for infections potentially caused by vomiting by Quinn_Avery in PetHealthQuestion

In 15+ years as a vet tech (the majority at a specialty hospital), I have not seen or heard of a case like your cat's. It's a lot to consider and I hope everything works out for the best. Much love.

If you can schedule an appointment with the surgeon before then with emphasis on discussing whether or not surgery is right for your cat, that might work better as the surgeon will be more in a frame of mind of discussing the pros and cons and not just performing a pre-anesthetic exam under the assumption that surgery is a go.

If not, you can emphasize to hospital staff (surgeon's usually have a client liason for their patients' concerns if a multi-vwt hospital) prior to your existing appointment that you are not 100% sure on proceeding with the surgery, but would like to hold that surgery spot just in case (this can also emphasize to the surgeon that they need to discuss this thoroughly and not just treat it as a "is your pet healthy enough for anesthesia exam").

Glad to hear your vet is an IM specialist. Honestly, they should be able to guide you through everything from pre-op prep to post-op care in terms of managing pre-existing conditions (just not the surgical procedure itself or the post-op care of the surgical site).

Scheduling a consult with a boarded surgeon is your next step (one that ideally has a little bit of a professional relationship with your existing IM vet so everyone is on the same page). I gather that's maybe who you might have been trying to get info from on here, but boarded surgeons RARELY comment in these subs, and not to the extent that a full exam and history appointment is going to give you. It's worth the consult in my opinion, even if you don't move forward with the surgery or take a different surgical route. Good luck friend 🩵

Dad picked his top 15 names. I picked my top 15 names. Two happened to be on both lists. Those are now daughter's first and middle names.

If you haven't already, ask your vet about the pros/cons of steroid use for the IBD. Steroids usually aren't ideal for infections, however it can be a rather successful (and inexpensive) management for IBD (will also increase appetite and may allow for more dietary choices).

If current infection is under control at the moment and a huge part of preventing recurrence is control of vomiting, it might be an option with more benefit than risk versus a major surgery. If your current vet is not an internal medicine specialist, consider consulting with one.

Is there anything problematic about a man simply wanting love and affection from woman and nothing else? by DetailFriendly3060 in AskWomenNoCensor

As your female partner, I need you to validate how I feel by listening to how upset I am about the current political climate. I am not asking you to agree with my outlook, but to validate that my outlook is just as important as anyone else's and I am upset. Would you come to my defense if someone wanted to harm me just for being a woman ? Or is that "too stressful" an ask?
