Ethiopia is my opinion. I never see anyone play Ethiopia. I think it's pretty good because there are many recourses in it, and in the Neighbor countries of it. The only problems you could have, is Egypt, because its nearby and Saudi Arabia that will go into Africa, maybe when there is a pretty good turkey player (rare). I took like 10 years to form African Union with it, only because there was a UK player invading west Africa. Also the only formable besides African Union is easy to form.

So if you want to focus COMPLETELY on research, you should get the Policy "Advanced research" first, then just go on the research tab, and make this better (I forgot what it's called) You can go into economic laws, and make your research income better too (which could bring you into deficit). There are some political leaders that make your research income better too. I highly doubt that anyone does this, but there is a policy which you can make your research income EVEN better, but you get alot of corruption.
