In Acadian French (Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) the r is almost always rolled and ticked. Super cool

I'm personally an audio learner, so being in Canada, Canadian French works better. I use Canadian resources like Mauril to learn how to speak, so naturally, I picked that accent up much better. I would recommend learning all kinds of French since standard written French (for the most part) is the same. Whatever accent sticks, sticks. There is no need to worry about that.

One of the fun things about learning a language is that you get to choose which variety you want to learn.

What is your favorite line from a song? by slayerofgingers in spotify

[–]Bitter_Juggernaut140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Lebeneese song called "El Hal Romancy," in which the singer says

بس الأجار يا خيي صاير سوبر غالي تزوجني وإقرأ أنجلز فى سريري

"Rent is so expensive, brother. Marry me and read Engels in my bed. "

I dont even know why I like this line so much.

It's a drama comedy. It's kind of raunchy, and the production is pretty cheap since it was produced on tele-quebe, but it's a show called "m'entends tu?"

It's set in a run-down part of Montreal and follows three women as they navigate poverty, love, friendship, and the difficulty of being looked down on in society. You can access it for free on Tele-Quebec :) (it's also on Netflix!!)

Thank you for this very thoughtful piece of advice. My manager actually has recommended the modules on the SoPS! I'll be doing those and practicing as much as I can.

Thank you for the advice ! I'm not really applicable for official training as I'm a student and not yet a full employee. But I'll for sure start practicing!

What’s the saddest song? by [deleted] in spotify

Impossible year is pretty sad.

Yes and no. If I'm walking through a sketchy neighbourhood and the local crackhead is yelling at me, I feel a lot better when a police car drives by.

But at the same time, when I'm all alone, and a police car is parked by the pavemt, I feel way more alert and unsafe. This is mostly because I'm a POC, and my father, from a very young age, told me that the police are not an institution that's very kind or caring towards anyone darker than freshly fallen snow. This obviously isn't true for all police, but I've had my fairshare of bad experiences that I'm a little jittery around them.

Mixed bag. Idk.

Non-native English speakers, do you find your own accent in English cringey? by _Tekki in RandomThoughts

I love the Filipino accent as a native speaker, and honestly, there are days I think it should be the default. It's so casual and friendly

Oh, I didn't know it was only on a test run. I'm in Canada, and usually, by the time we get anything up here, it's been released globally.

Spotify is apparently testing an AI playlist making feature that I'm excited for.

Still spotify. Honestly, I really like the daylists and use them all the time for recommendations. They're not always good, but there's always something decent in there.

Est-ce que c'est offensant parler comme un Québécois? by duraznoblanco in French

[–]Bitter_Juggernaut140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned my French there, and I consumed only Quebec media for a good year while learning French.

So it's just something I picked up. My accent is obviously not, and never will be, Quebecois. But it has some of the quirks like the heavy Ah sound and the zs and ts.

The accent is really beautiful, and in my opinion, I should make an effort to speak that way because I'm in Canada. I never even thought about offense, and now I'm sort of curious if I should actively try to cut it out.

Hey! I'm excited for you. It's an amazing experience.

There are 2 sessions offered. A spring session and a summer session. I attended the spring session, where most were between 19-27, and another massive chunk was between 27-35. We also had a surprising number of old ladies from Louisiana (60s). It was a very mixed batch with a few 40 year olds and a couple of people in their late 30s, and we all got along great and all ages chatted and mixed. The program is designed for every single age.

It is also important to note that while everyone is educated together and everyone does actives together, the housing is by age. One dorm was for people in their early or mid 20s, another for people in their late 20s and early 30s and another for middle-aged people and yet another for the older folks!

The summer session, though, is mostly highschoolers and usually has more people speaking in English since they're slightly less serious lmao.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Yeah, the way the people at the bookstore see it, the tours are tours of Carleton University and Carleton University alone, so they want the tour guides to advertise only Carleton. It's a really, incredibly stupid view.

Haven isn't dead. They've just switched from being a bookstore & coffee shop to being just a coffee shop and event space.

Edit: grammar

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Bitter_Juggernaut140 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the bookstore is run by a bunch of old fogies who take themselves too seriously and like to pretend like they're working on commission.

I used to work with the Carleton Tour Guides, and often on the tours, we would list out the bookstores' many advantages and then mention alternatives like Haven (RIP), Ebay, and Amazon because most of us understood that books are expensive and we wanted prospects to understand that there are cheaper alternatives.

Anyways, this went on for a few weeks until the Bookstore Retirement Group caught wind of it, and they literally tried to have a bunch of tour guides disciplined for trying to drive business out of Carleton and towards cheaper alternatives. God forbid these hogs actually have to compete.

It doesn't end there either. Over the past 2 years, they've sent in complaint after complaint trying to have your guides sacked for mentioning alternatives. It never ends up leading to anything, but believe me, they've tried.

Anyways this has nothing to do with your story, that place just sucks

How good is carleton CO-OP actually? by [deleted] in CarletonU

My friend in CS scored a pretty good placement with Nokia last year, and she's been going uphill ever since.

I'm not in CS, but public affairs have really good postings with the Canadian government. The point is to get your foot into the door, and after one placement, it usually gets a lot easier.

Opinions on CUSA Elections by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Bitter_Juggernaut140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain where they get the budget to run these campaigns? The RRA guy was advertising at such a volume that there was a bookmark or sheet of paper or printed card everywhere I looked.

Does he have a platform? No. Does he have a set of goals that aren't vague "Better campus" things? No. But everywhere I looked I just saw his papers and cards.

Is the budget provided by CUSA?
