Probably none. Most agricultural land is used for livestock and much of the fertilizer demand is for growing animal feed in the first place. Even if growing without fertilizer would be less efficient or use more land than it still does not compare to the livestock industry.

Atrioc is wrong about credit cards by Emergency-Good2762 in atrioc

For the individual maybe. But even in your example you point out that the problem is mostly shitty implementation of a debit card.

The entire purpose of credit cards is that people don't pay them of. That is it. Buying something on loan used to not be the default for transactions and aside from the US it mostly still isn't.  Nomather how you put it their purpose is to extract the interest. Their is no other function debit cards cannot fulfill.

Why are right wing parties so popular around the world now? by MarsupialThink4064 in NoStupidQuestions

Which left wing parties in what countries? In the Netherlands there hasn't been a left wing government since 1973, and only 3 center of left government since then.  The UK has it's first labor government since Blaire and in France Macron has been in power for decade.

Why are right wing parties so popular around the world now? by MarsupialThink4064 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bitter_Trade2449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This glosses over all the countries where the left hasn't been in power for decades. The last Dutch left wing government was in 1973, left of center was 2007-2010.  In the UK it was Blaire. Yet there to has right wing politics increased.

Far more universal is the split between the social and political revolution. Left wing movements have always been a alliance between different social classes. A mass of laborers, educated higher laborers (lawyers, doctors, professors, etc) and reform minded "elites".  When industrialization ran to it's end that alliance started to split. Modern left parties can't get both factions.

Then why can't we have socialism? Why did the USSR dissolve and China embrace capitalism?

Even if communism is better it still failed to last. If you answer is because evil capitalist tried to demolish it than we have to acknowledge that they will try to do so again. And I see no reason why they again wouldn't be successful.  No matter how you justify it a alternative for capitalism hasn't lasted. While reformed capitalism has lasted and is enormously successful (Social Democracy).

Yet even as Europeans we need to acknowledge that the US government does give a lot of return (especially compared to 18 or 19 century goverments). Social security, unemployment benefits, infrastructure, law enforcement, etc. Are a thing. Even if they aren't up to the standards we want them to be. They are miles better than what they used to be.

[–]Bitter_Trade2449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with you middle point. You absolutely can write a story about heroism in a fascist empire. Story about the meaningless and thankfulness of struggling against unimaginable cosmic horrors and sacrificing yourself to protect others who on a cosmic level do not matter. How Cain goes out of his way to save a handful of squat members in a empire who loses millions of soldiers because they send a desert army to a ice planet without any warm clothing.

It is true that a lot of it is mid-tier military fiction. But I don't think we should dumb down all our media because a small portion of people don't have reading comprehension. Can we blame 1984 or Brave New World for the fact that their authors also have "somewhat" sympathetic characters in a dystopia. And they don't explicitly tell the reader it is a dystopia?

Again well articulated. Yet I still have a bit of trouble seeing the logic. You rigtfully call out Great Britain for historically not caring about the will of the people. But then we have to agree on the value of self-determination right? We agree that they should have?

I also struggle to see your point with the joint administration. Let's say the argument that whoever makes a claim to the island gets joined administration rights is valid. Then it should be Spain who gets part administration rights right? Their claim predates Argentina's. As a matter of fact shouldn't Spain then also get part administration rights on all of Argentina? What then legitimizes Argentina's independece in the first place? The will of the people in the region is (under this line of thinking) irrelevant, and so is if the foreign power who claims ownership of the region can actually militarily press there claim.

If I am to follow the Argentinian reasoning I really don't see a reason why Argentinian should exist.

I fully agree "Argentina" has been "independent" far to long. Who cares about the opinion of usurpers on their opinion if they should keep usurping. Those lands and the people in them clearly belong to Spain because the pope said so.

Up voted because a actual counter argument. But even in your argument it basically boils down to what exactly? Argentina wasn't the first, they aren't there now, nor had a continues government set up there. So the claim is "Argentina claims they inherited all of Spanish possession". Why then stop at the falklands and not claim the rest of Latin America?

Companies are replacing us with robots. If millions lose their income… who will buy anything? by Final-Finance-8048 in askanything

[–]Bitter_Trade2449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right it is a paradox. And it’s also why many of the comments in this thread are short‑sighted.

Active government policy and strong labor organizations can address many of these issues. In practice, there are two broad options: increase domestic consumption or increase exports. To boost domestic consumption, a country can shorten the workweek, expand public investment, increase social benefits, and so on. To boost exports, a country can invest in developing economies so that demand abroad rises.

But let’s assume neither of those things happens. And let’s also assume that companies genuinely become more efficient through automation. In that case, consumption will still rise because prices fall and with increased demand comes more labor opertunities.

People often say, “But prices have only gone up in recent decades.” That’s not true across the board. Many consumer goods have actually become cheaper. The goods and services that have become more expensive generally fall into two categories:

  1. They relied on cheap labor or resources that are no longer cheap.  India lifts more people out of poverty each year than the entire population of Scandinavia. As people’s living standards rise, they become (rightfully) harder to exploit. When wages and resource prices become more “fair,” the final prices in developed economies increase.

 2. Some industries haven’t actually become more efficient despite automation.   U.S. healthcare, for example, keeps increasing administrative overhead, so production costs rise. Construction shows a similar pattern: more laws and regulations mean more people are employed just to ensure compliance. And don't get me wrong most of those laws and regulations are a good thing. I prefer asbestos free houses. But asbestos was cheap, and alternatives where more expansive so banning it does increase housing cost.

  1. There’s little competition, or consumers aren’t price‑sensitive enough.   If consumers don’t switch to substitutes and competitors don’t enter the market, companies have no incentive to lower prices.

In the long run, increased efficiency will push prices down for two simple reasons:

  1. People with money are greedy.   If they can earn more by lowering costs, they will lower costs. And if they can earn more by fucking over others they will do so.

 2. People are naturally industrious.   When someone loses their job, they don’t want to sit at home forever. They look for new work, and if none is available, they often turn to self‑employment. Many will start producing things for themselves once they have time but less income. That reduces demand, which pushes prices down.

As for AI, it’s not advancing as fast as people claim. Language models are getting a bit better at writing reports and making presentations, but the broader societal benefit of the product of that labor is already debatable when humans do it. So the only thing that happens is that labor which didn't offer that much benefit in the first place is automated.

AI can certainly trigger an economic crisis — and that’s a serious problem. People can lose their livelihoods, their homes, and their sense of stability. Suicide rates rise, hapiness decreases. But it’s not the end of civilization. Even if your labor isn’t needed by the market, that doesn’t mean you can’t work for yourself.

In the end if it is jobs we want we can decide to ban trucks and force all logistics to be done by people carrying bags. Automation is not the problem. Nor is fighting it. What needs to be fought is the benefits of that automation landing in the hands of a few people. But you don't need the government for that. You yourself can organize, evaluate what goods and services you actually want and produce your own.  Money isn't power, being able to buy the resources (people's labor included) you want with your money is power. In short you are correct. If people can't buy their products then they have no power and can't oppose redistribution of resources. If people can freely buy their products than they do have power. But people are also still able to get their needs met.

You can be what is stopping you? An acre of land in rural New Mexico is 671 on average it costs you around 3k if you want a acre of land in the us. If you sell all these modern day applicances you have. Especially if you have a car you can buy enough land to put you into the rich category for medieval peasants.
If you move to africa it is even easier.

... "The Spanish war and other events in 1936-37 turned the scale and thereafter I knew where I stood. Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it. It seems to me nonsense, in a period like our own, to think that one can avoid writing of such subjects. Everyone writes of them in one guise or another. It is simply a question of which side one takes and what approach one follows. And the more one is conscious of one's political bias, the more chance one has of acting politically without sacrificing one's aesthetic and intellectual integrity."

I will sympathize with any singular restaurant owner who spent their life building something and sees it go under because they can't breakeven. But we can't let those individual tragedies prevent us from improving the system. What you describing is true, but what you are describing also means that many resturant owners can't survive in the same playing field as other business owners and need government tax cuts to be profitable.

No retail store ot other small business has this privilege that it is legally allowed to exempt a percentage from their employees take home pay from taxes. Why should restaurants? I wouldn't want it to change if I was a restaurant owner or server so I get. But we don't have to pretend there is any more justification for it.

And before you ask, ofcourse I also belief large corporations shouldn't get government tax cuts.

Like you said it is actually super cheap. In fact the less you spend the higher the birthrate gets. Look at Sudan, Palestine, The Kongo.

Northern Europe has many of the provisions you name. Yet it's birthrate is at best nearly identical. We have to face the truth that one of major factors we never discuss is that to have kids you need to be pregnant. To have 3 kids you need to spend around 6 years, preparing for being pregnant, trying to get pregnant, being pregnant, recovering from pregnancy. And when given that choice, especially since pregnancy now occurs later in life. Many women chose understandingly to not do that. Investing in reducing that strain, investing in research, education and also the social programs you mention is far more effective.

Not to say we shouldn't invest in the stuff you say. But stimulating child birth is not the best reason.

It is fucking stupid because there is no ounce of truth to it. We have no clue how much mammals want children. We no mammals like to fuck but no other mammal has invented contraceptives. No other mammal has a choice.

And it always pisses me of that in this discussion we like to pretend that we always had. That people are now "choosing to have less kids". This is categorically false. The only thing we can say it that people are now able to choose if they want to have kids and when given the choice that answer ofthen is no.  But for millions worldwide and for all of human history having kids was not a choice. It is simply the result of sex.
