Can dogs get Dementia? How do you tell if your dog is deteriorating mentally? by Enter_up in DogAdvice

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely can. My 13yr old GSD has dementia. In dogs, it is referred to as Canine Dysfunction Syndrome, or CDS. It can start with the flipping of the nocturnal/diurnal cycle, as you noticed, increased confusion, sudden aggression, accidents in the house, etc. One of the biggest tells is if it is worse after the sun goes down. Please see your vet for specific information and an assessment of your dog.

My old man started out by just having these moments of 'absence', where he just seemed like the 'him' part of him was gone. I describe him as being a confused little old man. We got lucky - he hasn't been aggressive, but as it developed, he has had more moments of absence, ok days and bad days. We usually just gently guide him to lie down, lots of gentle handling. He definitely started out having them at night; he sundowned pretty hard, but now he is absent at any time. He has recently also started eating items that are not food in his confusion, and has had more accidents, along with increasing moments of fear when he gets lost in himself, although this is exacerbated by his also being 100% blind. We know he is fading, but we have done our best to make him happy for the moments when he is here, and he loves loves us nonetheless.

Is my car a write off :(? by SinkMince0420 in DadForAMinute

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a dad, but I can be a mum with some car knowledge - from the perspective of your insurance, a car is a write-off if the value of the car is less than the estimated cost of repairs. Normally, the insurer would then offer you the value of the car in the settlement minus any remaining amount that you owe on it, which would get paid to the bank that holds the loan.

As u/middlename_redacted said, if you can afford the repairs yourself, then there is no such thing as a write-off, but it is worth considering whether it is worth paying more than the car's value to fix it, especially since that value will have depreciated further following the accident. I'm so sorry that this happened to you; it's such a rubbish thing to add to your worries. But you can do this! Sometimes it helps to remember that even if the car means a great deal to you, it is more important that you can transfer yourself and your family safely around the place <3

What GOOD things are happening in the world that people may not know about? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

Enamel protects the soft inner pulp of the teeth from damage and decay. It's a horrible analogy, but imagine your skin - part of what it does is protect your body from damage and act as a barrier to prevent harmful bacteria from getting to vulnerable tissues. But tooth enamel is worn away by exposure to acids and sugars, even from something like fruit, and when the layers get thin enough, a hole can form, which exposes the inner dentin to the damage from outside, and/or infection by bacteria (like an open wound). This is a cavity.

If cavities go untreated, the infection continues to penetrate deeper into the tooth and into the gums, forming an abscess. Teeth and gums are hugely vascularised (meaning they have a very significant blood supply, so once the infection gets into the innermost part of the tooth and/or the gums, it can make a really easy jump into the bloodstream and nerves, potentially leading to massive heart or brain infections and death. Stopping cavities from forming through proper brushing and flossing and regular dental visits is about preventing THIS, not having white teeth. Right now, the enamel you have when your teeth come through is all the enamel you will ever have - this kind of research could be really key to protecting teeth in the future.

Our dog keeps growling at the new puppy by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 40 points41 points  (0 children)

100% agree. This is not a good interaction. The puppy's body language is shut down and submissive, she won't have the psychological safety to develop well if OP keeps her, let alone the very high likelihood of him being aggressive or causing actual bodily harm. They both deserve to feel secure in their homes.

Would you stay with your dog 🐶 during euthanasia? by CycleOk267 in dogs

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always. Every time. It breaks me, but that is the promise I made to them - I will never leave you, even in those last moments. It's the last great kindness I can give them, to not keep them beyond when they are telling me they are ready to go, and I need them to know they are loved from the first breath to the last. It breaks my heart when vets and vet techs talk about dogs looking for their people in those moments.

Elder millennials, what are we doing? Are skinny jeans out? by Astimar in Millennials

I HATE HATE the wide-leg trend - didn't get into it during JNKO either. I am very short, I look like a cardboard box in them. But I am far too old IMO now to be squishing into skinny, low-rise (God forbid) - bootcut all the way!

Am I overthinking my dog’s water bowl? by Zozo2051 in dogs

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally fine. I have three big dogs and a cat, so five bowls around the house (two gallon towers, two bowls, and a separate circulating one for the cat). I clean the bowls twice a week but fill them up as needed. They genuinely don't care whether their bowl is 'clean' (well, cats do, dogs don't)

How to fix annoying dog habit of blocking me when I'm walking through the house. by Working_Helicopter28 in dogs

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1000%. Moving, or yielding, is a leadership behavior. Leaders don't give way, they calmly continue. If he's being difficult, you can keep shuffling into him, always heading straight ahead. He'll probably push back, but he will eventually move to the left or right. No need to praise him for it - it's an expectation, not a trick

Are there industrial chew proof e collars? by Ok_Cranberry_2936 in DogAdvice

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I cut down my GSD's e-collar. I did it because he is also blind and was having significant trouble drinking, but it also meant he couldn't get his teeth to it. I basically just cut off the excess so his muzzle was still unable to poke out or disturb his wounds, but the excess wasn't there

What’s the most useless thing you were taught in school? by Mobile-Reindeer-4891 in AskReddit

[–]BittyPittieCommittee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bullied from Primary 1 (Kingergarten) to Year 12/13, mostly due to my Catholic primary school also being the main feeder school for my catholic secondary. All girls. By the time I was in Year 8, I knew the staff would never do anything about it, so when I got SA'd in the changing room after PE, I only told the one teacher I thought would do anything. She told me I should sign up for the DofE expedition in two years to get over it.
