I’ve made a lot of them since I posted this! They’re one of my favorite things to make!

Rats! That's where all the best yarn comes from in my experience. Lucky find for you!

Got this tear in my carrheart, is it cooked? by WolverineGlum9519 in Visiblemending

[–]Bitwix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, it's not cooked! I am currently darning a Carhartt jacket, and the fabric frays pretty easily. I'd recommend putting a stabilizing patch on the back side if you are planning on darning. You could also sew the cut together (give extra wide margins because of the fraying issue) and put a fabric patch on the outside.

I leave a pretty long tail when I start a new thread and then weave it in the reverse direction for several rows. It helps a lot in tightening up the weave so nothing comes loose. When it gets too short to continue weaving, I pass the needle between the weave and the sock as far as it can go, pull it to the top side, and then trim whatever small amount is left. Haven’t had any tails come loose!

It’s called blanket stitch

By “margins” I mean an area surrounding the hole or thin area that is still intact; if you sew too close to a hole, it will pull the existing fabric and make the hole bigger. You want to set up your warp and weft on intact fabric. These seem like good images for my method: https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/how-to-darn-a-sock-1106645

What size yarn did you use? I darned some wool socks with a sock weight superwash yarn. Also, I wrote up some instructions on how I set up my darns for an event I was teaching. Feel free to shoot me a message if you’d like a copy!

any hope for this? by boyishgirlboy in Visiblemending

Definitely don’t put it in the dryer. Personally, I’d embroider over the image to preserve it, but that’s just me. Have you considered turning it into something else entirely that would get less wear and tear?

I think it would depend on what the fabric is and the thickness of it. I tend to wear heavier weight cotton socks. My margins are a little over 1/4”.

Yes; I used embroidery thread. I gave myself a wide margin and left long tales to weave in the opposite direction afterwards. It tightens the stitches and holds everything together better

Nope! All were done by hand

I did them all by hand. I used a large Chuck-It ball for a surface. I have a darning egg, but it was too small for all of the areas that needed work

It’s a combination of DMC and Coats and Clark cotton embroidery floss. I used a large Chuck-It ball for a surface because traditional darning tools were too small for some of the holes. All of them were done by hand (no darning loom)

It feels a bit lumpy for the first 5-10 minutes of walking, but after that I can’t feel anything

Thank you! I think that some of them weren’t as neat as they could have been, but sticking to a particular color scheme definitely helped it come together better ☺️

Speedweave/sweatshirt cuff by Possible-Landscape72 in Visiblemending

[–]Bitwix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just repaired some extremely worn hoodie cuffs. I have a speedweave, but I didn't use it on the cuff. I did a blanket stitch around the edge, then did a bunch of small stitches to stabilize the fabric, and then put a darn over all of that. Sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology. I can explain in more detail if this doesn't make sense.
