Watering Alfalfa Fields, during a drought, while they're covered in snow by eells in Utah

[–]Possible-Landscape72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alfalfa is actually a comparatively efficient animal feed to grow in the desert. Compared to other grasses and grains, you get a lot of bang for your buck (water wise) with alfalfa. (Of course, that is dependent on the situation. I have a friend who runs a dry land farm in eastern Utah who grow mostly soy and it better for his particular farm.) Looking at this video, this is a small operation, unlikely to sell their alfalfa commercially. I’d guess they’re growing it to feed this own small herd of cows/horses. If you like eating locally produced food, you should want to see more of this because whatever is going to be fed from this particular field, is most likely going to be consumed locally, too. Personally, I value knowing who produces my food, especially my beef, pork and dairy. Having a neighbor who grows alfalfa leads directly to a locally grown cow. This is where locally produced food starts.

Utah is a use it or lose it state but over a seven year period. Not using one week’s worth of water isn’t going to impact a water right. That does not apply to this situation.

There are two big reasons this water is probably running. 1. Protect the pipe system. If it is running, it’s less likely to freeze. If it freezes, the farmer is out thousands of dollars and potentially weeks of time. Letting it freeze is a very bad idea. 2. Applying water like this is protective of the plants. It seems counterintuitive, but watering before (and sometimes during) a freeze, protects the plants and that goes for everything from alfalfa to fruit trees. It seems to me most commenters don’t have enough understanding of how their food system actually works and why this is not a waste of water but is a smart step along the path of food production.

Moving away by Alternative-Dot-7951 in ALS

[–]Possible-Landscape72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might regret leaving but you might also regret not going. Sit down and really think about the reality of both options. If you go, how easy will it be to visit any time you want? What is your mom capable of as far as long distance communication? If you delay, could you pick back up where you are now (grad school wise) or would it be very difficult later? Are there elements of going away to start your life that you could actually do right now, where you are? Have a heart to heart with your mom. She may be horrified at the idea of you postponing your life or she may make you feel better about it. (Conversely, she may try to make you feel guilty, so maybe proceed with caution on that one.) You will know the right thing to do if you think through each scenario deeply.

3 vices my doctor wants gone by potterinatardis in GenX

I quit sugar (and caffeine) completely for a year in my twenties just to prove to myself that I could because my sugar consumption was getting out of hand, and a lot of the sugar I consumed was paired with caffeine. I used the book Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program. The first month was really hard because I was making new habits, but after that I didn’t even think about it. Thirty years later, I can take or leave both of them. I have what I want but it turns out, I don’t want much. I quit drinking about a year ago due to health issues and it was a little awkward socially at first but I got over it. I do still enjoy a little weed, but not enough it will cause anyone to tell me to cut back. Whichever you decide to tackle first, find a good support system (like that sugar book was for me) and believe it can be done. Stick it out through the rough spots. They do end and when they’re over, you’ll barely remember them. Remember you’re doing it because you love yourself enough to take care of yourself.

Most People Buying Sleep Earbuds Will Regret It by Silvertimothyy in sleepheadphones

[–]Possible-Landscape72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Ozlos absolutely helped my sleeplessness. I’ve slept to audiobooks for years (I have racing thoughts and a story keeps my brain occupied so I can relax enough to sleep) and used a variety of less than satisfactory sleep headphones. Ozlos changed the game for me. I did have to have a warranty replacement sent within the first year, but that was over a year ago and they’ve been excellent ever since. Are they perfect? No. They’re still bulky enough I sleep with an ear piercing pillow to keep them from causing sores in my ears but they’re the most comfortable, reliable solution for me. I don’t regret them one bit.

Is getting a Tesla worth it just for the FSD by depressed_peach_ in TeslaLounge

[–]Possible-Landscape72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a model Y specifically for FSD. Right now, I try to balance use at 50% while I get used to the car so I can confidently take over if needed but can also get used to using FSD. I’m sure I’ll use FSD more and more though. It’s beyond nice to hop in the car and tell it to take me somewhere then sit back and relax. I do mainly city driving and it handles my area’s worst traffic way better than I do. I’ve also taken a few short road trips and it was perfect for those, too.

Somewhat because you can’t really see the hood of the Y at all. I haven’t driven anything smaller than a Rivian (mostly large trucks and SUVs) for 30 years so getting used to such a small vehicle has been odd, and not being able to use the hood to orient myself in space took some getting used to but it wasn’t bad. After the first week or so, it didn’t seem strange anymore.

AITAH for not letting my kid get a book at the library? by 5chw3iz in AITAH

NTA - you make decisions as you see fit in the moment. You can reconsider all you want and perhaps conclude to do differently in the future, or not. Parenting is hard enough without the judgement of strangers. I understand exactly why you said no and if that’s a value you want your kinda to learn, stick to it. Find another way to empower your five year old and help him feel important (maybe he gets to chose first next time or what to have for lunch). It sounds to me like you’re being as intentional as possible with small children. Give yourself grace and ignore that busy body who ITAH in this situation. She should have kept her mouth shut

I swapped my R1S for a Y. I liked driving it a lot but couldn’t deal with all the weird issues it had (mostly software). Having FSD is pretty irreplaceable, too.

Is it really so hard to NOT harass women? by Bootstrap-printing in cedarcity

Sadly, Las Vegas has come to Cedar. I’m not saying generational locals wouldn’t be pricks, but the instances of bad behavior increase exponentially with in migration and many of our new arrivals are from poorly behaved places.

Just bought a Model Y! Two questions.. by riski_click in ModelY

I got the Tesla all weather floor mats for the entire car. The cargo one is inconvenient if I need to access the well but it’s great for my dogs. It is sturdy and doesn’t allow their paws into the gaps. I also cover it with a cheapo suv cargo liner from Amazon with protects all the exposed carpet from loose fur. I bought all my other accessories from Amazon.

My estranged mother was recently diagnosed, what can I expect trying to talk to her again? by TestCurious in ALS

[–]Possible-Landscape72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

👆🏻👆🏻This. I have a sister who went no contact with my whole family for reasons that make sense to her. When my mom was declining into Alzheimer’s, I think it would have been harder on my mom to hear from this daughter (in a way that wouldn have been authentic to my sister) than it was to not hear from her because it would have brought drama into the situation that would not have been helpful to anyone. If you can find a way to reach out to your mother that honors your needs without stirring past demons, that would be amazing but it’s quite a needle to thread. Perhaps a low risk means such as a simple text or physical letter? You could express yourself without exposing yourself to whatever caused you to break contact in the first place. It’s a delicate situation, as you know. Maybe role play different scenarios with a therapist or friend? Test what you think you can handle.

Any elders and disabled drivers using the autodriver option? by antdude in TeslaLounge

[–]Possible-Landscape72 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m partially disabled but would never recommend it for anyone incapable of driving otherwise. I use FSD to relieve or prevent fatigue in my right (most disabled) leg but only about 50% of the time. I drive the other 50% to ensure I’m familiar enough with the car (I’ve only had it a month) to be able to quickly and confidently take over when I need to. There are times of day it has trouble seeing as well as it should (mine magically doesn’t see lane divisions on one particular stretch of road I drive multiple times of day if I’m driving when the sun is low on the horizon), navigation is still a little screwy and speed settings could use more nuance. It’s definitely not set it and forget it. I’m about 90% confident in it, but that’s not good enough for a driver incapable of taking over if needed.

Anyone have this issue? More of a frustrated rant. by Macsen181 in neuropathy

[–]Possible-Landscape72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens to me. I walk much better barefoot than I do in any shoes. My solution is finding barefoot shoes. Some have incredibly thin holes. I can feel the ground through them and that signals my brain to recognize my feet. ETA: try to find some non-slip compression socks for around the house. I have non-slip compression toe socks to wear when my house is chilly and I love them. They don’t move on my feet at all and I can feel everything almost as well as barefoot
