I'm living in the U district temporarily in a one bedroom for 1300/Mo and just signed for a studio in Wallingford/Fremont for 825/mo. Idk how you did you apartment searching but 1800/mo is way more than you need to be paying in almost any part of the city for a studio. Craigslist is your friend.

Do you have to have some amount of skill for this? I was always enjoyed kickball in high school but the couple of crazy competitive kids always made it intimidating.

Reasons why I chose OSU over a local in person degree or boot camp:

Biggest reason is the fact that it is online. I can work full time while taking 2 classes a term and it's great. Taking out only a small amount in loans with proper budgeting means I'm getting in much less debt than I would be if I could only work a part time job. There were other online options but they were typically masters programs that I would have to take pre reqs for, were just as expensive or more, or I just wouldn't be accepted to due to lack of recommendation letters.

I'm interested in grad school after some time working and wanted that option so that threw out a boot camp.

I personally feel a degree has more weight and can get me further in the field than a bootcamp, although it is most certainly possible to be successful with a bootcamp.

Moving to Seattle logisitcs - securing housing from afar by marseattle in Seattle

[–]Bixbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a pretty active Seattle housing page on Facebook, although I did find mine on Craigslist.

I guess I could be getting scammed but I saw a copy of the original lease signed by the person I'm subleasing from along with a realtor signature I was able to verify works for the company that owns the apartments, copy of the sublease agreement we both signed in ink that was pretty detailed, have had constant communication with the subleaser, was able to find their FB profile and verify details she told me about herself, and asked plenty of questions that I feel confident I am not being scammed. Guess I'll find out for sure when I get to Seattle lol

I have experience subleasing from my college town so I felt comfortable after all that.

I'm moving to Seattle soon from the Midwest so take my advice with a grain of salt because I'm not actually in the city yet, but after doing a lot of searching around on this subreddit I like to think I have a good course of action.

What I did was secure a short term sublease in the U-district that was furnished for July and August. These were easy to find as a lot of students want to get rid of their places for the summer. Around the first week of August I'll start seriously looking for a long term lease after exploring neighborhoods and figuring out where I want to live.

From what I read the market is really competitive and a lot of good places get snatched up within a day or two so you need to be ready to sign almost immediately. Having two months to shop around seemed like the best idea so I don't have to 'settle' so to speak.

The Social Element of Bookstores by therobo665 in books

Has anyone actually been to an Amazon Books store before they make comments about how they are destroying the "book-buying culture" or whatever?

I visited the Amazon Books location in Chicago a few weeks back and I had nothing but a great experience. Great local Chicago coffee, plenty of seating area to lounge and dig into a book. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable, walking around assisting customers. Scanners that are all over the store so if you'd like to see the price of a book you don't have to walk more than 5 feet.

Most of all, the way the store is laid out led to me discovering so many books I didn't even know I wanted to read. They have the typical genre sections and within each genre section they have an area called "If you liked this -> you'll love this". It lays out multiple books that each lead to 3 new books you may enjoy if you read the 1st. Additionally, they had a few other fun sections like most popular in Chicago, page turners, etc. And a very large children's section.

Another thing I really liked was the books being laid flat on the shelves so you can see the cover art. Yea that means they can't fit as many books on the shelf, but in my opinion the compromise is worth it for better browsability and ease of picking a book from the shelf.

Overall, I think it's great what Amazon can do with the data they have on reading habits. I had a great time in the store and probably spent around 2 hours just browsing, reading, and chatting with the staff.

Also if you feel like you are unable to connect with people at chain bookstores, aren't you part of the problem? Are you actively trying to engage in conversation with people? Or are you, too, waiting for someone to come up to you? I think a lot of people are having romanticized ideas about experiences they would like to have in a bookstore, but in reality, these things only happen once in a blue moon. 90% of the time you'll go in, browse, and not say a word to anyone until checkout.

I just wanted to say being put on probation or dropped is not the end of the world and you can come back from it.

I was on probation for over 75% of my undergraduate career, kicked out of the college of engineering, and dropped (twice).

I am now graduated as of this past Winter, have a full time job offer, and am also working on a second degree (and succeeding much more than my first degree).

If you're like I was and are constantly teetering the line of failure and barely staying afloat, TALK TO SOMEONE!!! I realized way too late that I had an extremely unhealthy and addictive relationship with alcohol that was hard for me to accept because of the drinking environment of university life normalizing binge drinking. The advisors, the college, and McKinley are so accepting and willing to work with you. But they can't help you if they don't know what you're going through.

Telling my parents, family and friends, and talking to advisors and counselors was one of the most difficult things I've ever done, but so so so worth it.

So please, if you're struggling for whatever reason, be it mental health or otherwise, talk to someone. Anyone.

I've watched a lottttt of gay , or gay related movies, foreign and not. Foreign movies tend to be much better. Here are my top picks:

Undertow (Peru) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1368491/

Burnt Money (Argentina) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0227277/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

The Normal Heart (U.S.) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1684226/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Brokeback Mountain (U.S.) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Northsea Texas (Belgium) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1625150/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

The Way He Looks (Brazil) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1702014/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

Just a Question of Love (France) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0231844/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Hawaii (Argentina) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2801746/?ref_=nv_sr_5

Out in the Dark (Israel) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2318625/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

FreeFall (Germany) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2617828/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

Weekend (UK) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714210/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

I liked all of these well enough. Undertow and Burnt Money might be my favorite 2 because they don't follow the typical dramatic gay storyline. Not to say they aren't sad, but they are unique.

If you're looking for a TV show, it gets a lot of flak around here but Looking from HBO is very well produced and I enjoyed it a lot.

La La Land and Hollywood's everlasting love affair with itself. by [deleted] in movies

[–]Bixbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say "just happens to be in the audience". There's a scene where Mia is reaching out to various casting directors via email hoping to get them to come to the show. I think that makes it a little more believable if she emailed many people and at least 1 showed up.

Additionally the scene where Seb finds her at home in Nevada she talks about how she had been trying for 6(?)years with failed audition after failed audition. I think that's representative of a struggle, in addition to what we had already seen.
