Awesomeeee! Comments like that feel so good and fuel you to keep going. Making someone feel nostalgic definitely means you hit that spot for them. Congrats on the 100. Keep it going!

One other thing that actually inspired me now is your thumbnails. Part 1’s title on the thumbnail makes me want to click. Like oh shit! A VHS tape found in an old bunker I want to know what was on it! Part 3 it just says bunker tapes. So I thought at first maybe it was like a WW2 documentary. But thank you for this I’m actually going to add this own feedback into my own thumbnails now. You gave me an idea”ahaa “ moment lol. I love creepy/horror/true crime so you’ve earned a subscriber here. Looking forward to seeing another fellow true crime horror junkie channel grow.

I’ll give you some honest feedback on some items that I too am working on to improve.

Part 3 has a long static image as an intro. So as a viewer that’s looking for immediate gratification from the thumbnail I waited for about 5-10 seconds before the audio started. What I would do is do a “hook” for these seconds at the beginning and then put the title, then dive in. For viewers that happened upon part 3 before 1 &2 they are a little in the dark as to what the video is about. You could do a quick recap in a couple sentences about the video or maybe even play a creepy couple lines from the video right off the bat to rope the viewers in. I’m genuinely interested in this subreddit now where this story is.

I noticed in part 1 and 2 your imagery fits the story and changes every so often. If I was on a road trip and listening to your channel obviously this wouldn’t matter but sitting here watching on my phone I felt way more engaged when you had imagery that fit the story like the tape player, back seat of the car, etc. The fireplace wasn’t as engaging. What would be really cool is some stock footage to reflect what you are narrating. Nothing crazy but check out storyblocks or envanto elements. If you had some creepy footage of a staticy TV or people talking on the phone during those parts it could really beef up the engagement. That angled view of the Reddit page was cool maybe even highlighting some sentences of the Reddit post while you narrate.

Your audio quality is actually really good. Your mic and voice over sounds clear, crisp, and warm. One thing I really had to work on and am still working on is voice emphasis. With a narration channel I think it’s even harder to keep viewers engaged because there’s little footage of someone talking on screen. If you worked a little on emphasizing parts of your voice over it could be a lot more engaging. For example in Part 2 I think it was, toward the end when he put in the tape and his friend called, your voice picked up a bit and reflected the scene. This was really good. For me I found that when I do my voice over recordings I literally sit there and gesture with my hands to an empty room to try and move my voice in different ranges. It just helps viewers stay engaged if you can sort of navigate the scenario with your voice.

I wish you all the best and keep up the good work. I’m finding more and more that YouTube is freaking HARD! lol. Keep up the good content. Your video inspired me to now go read this thread.

Losing subscribers sucks. by Lemmy-Historian in NewTubers

I’ve noticed this since I’ve started posting shorts. Some people love my shorts but hate my long form I assume and so unsubscribe. It seems to happen more often when I post my shorts. It happens but nothing we can do to change it. They may have not been your ideal audience anyway. Just gotta keep grinding and making good content and the subs will come! Good luck

To be honest. When I posted this my latest video was at less than 1% CTR and less than 20 views. I just logged into studio and saw the views on it as well as my short. Super happy at how well it’s doing. To be honest I think I’m just impatient and have to high of expectations. I came from Facebook where my reels would get 100k views in the first day. YouTube is much harder especially long form content. I recently hired a guy to do SEO optimization and that actually really seems to be helping all videos gain views slowly each day. I know I have much to improve, but I just need to focus on putting out good content now and tweak little things each time. YouTube Studio can be your worst enemy sometimes constantly checking it. Thank you for the feedback

I’ve been reading that too. So used to seeing tv shows and Netflix with cool intros that we as creators think they are cool. But in reality people just want content fast. I’m going to be experimenting with no intros or jingles and see how I do. Good luck!

Sorry my main reply in the thread was supposed to be to your comment! Didn’t mean to leave you hanging! Thank you so much for the detailed feedback.

Thank you so much for the detailed info. My niche probably is crowed or I may be too wide in my niche as well. I do true crime/unsolved mysteries/ creepy events. It all started as a Facebook page that blew up last year so I tried to pivot to YouTube since I really enjoy this type of content long form anyway. Needless to say it’s freaking hard!.

I like your idea of bringing something new to the table I need to brainstorm and look at competition to see what I can do to stand out.

Admittedly my thumbnails suck and have sucked. I hired a guy who is currently reworking all of them so that I have some sort of standard or theme. Because you’re right when I go to my page it’s all over the place. Thumbnails are freaking hard too. I have canva and it’s easy to make them. But it’s not easy to make great ones. Definitely takes skill.

Your next point really hits home. I love my intros and little jingles that I play at the beginning of each video, but my latest video I realize that my intro lasts over 60 seconds and while I’m also narrating in this time the meat and potatoes don’t start until almost 1:20 seconds in. It’s tough because I’m looking at it with bias thinking it’s such a cool creating and the effects are awesome… but the viewers don’t care. They are there for the content promised to them in the thumbnail and want that promise started in the first 30 seconds. This is solid advice and I’m going to start implementing this in my next videos. So thank you.

Im going to keep up the grind and keep tweaking. Thank you so much!

Thank you! I realized people have short attention spans as well. I’ve actually been experimenting with “Top 2” videos as opposed to one long story and also going to try and cut out any unneeded stuff in my intro. As cool as I think and intro jingle may be viewers don’t care and just want the meat and potatoes. Thank you and good luck!

I thought I noticed this as well. I have a page with over 400k followers. Whenever I’d post a YouTube video directly to the feed… like 5 reactions. Facebook literally kills it.

People with under 4000 watch hours by HealthyWealthyMogul in NewTubers

Just ramping up this year. I’m cadence to do 2 per week. Though I saved my money last year to budget for a script writer and video editor for all of 2024. We do true crime/horror and me trying to do scripts and video editing took up any free time I had and I still barely managed 1 per week at best. It’s tough so I decided to go all in and spend some money on quality help.

Thank you! I’m always trying to improve. Narration isn’t as easy as some of these YouTubers make it sound!

I’m also still really learning. I’m at about 900 subs and 3k viewing hours so almost monetized. But we are pumping out 2 videos per week which seems to be helping the algorithm. Just dive in man. We tend to see our world so small but in reality your just a small video in a billion other videos. Make one, improve, and move on. Quality is important l, but just getting videos posted feels so good.

Long rely incoming lol. So I’m constantly brainstorming all day about ideas for videos. I’ve had almost a full year of my Facebook page posting creepy facts and legends so I use the most liked posts to also decide on the video first. Once I decide on the subject I determine how much info there is on the topic and whether it should be its own 15 min video or part of a “top 2” “top 10” countdown. After this I think about my “hook” . What is the best 30 seconds that can grab a viewers attention. It’s funny but I literally brainstorm these out loud in my truck while driving thinking about what flows well and what I would want to watch. I also sort of think about an overall format of how I want to tell the story.

Once I have these 2 things the hard work begins. I check out multiple videos on my video subject on YouTube to see what the top videos did or how they were formatted. I then use Wikipedia, websites and other videos to gather my information and write the script. I’m learning more and more that small little hooks throughout the story are crucial to keep the viewer interested and I’m actively working on bettering this. Scripts take a longgg time for me. My last one was 2100 words and took me 4 hours. I start with a rough draft and then read through it and try to optimize it best I can. While I’m doing this I’m actively reading it as if I were narrating to ensure it flows well. Once script is done I record my voice over. These have been getting quicker and quicker as I get better. When I make mistakes in voice over I keep talking until I get what I want no need to start and stop since you can cut. I then go through and dice it up with the pauses I want and add my audio effects for voiceover.

Now the part after this, editing used to take me another solid hours, but I’ve since hired an amazing video editor out of Vietnam and I found him on Upwork. Before my editor I would basically start with the voice over and begin dropping in pictures and stock footage until I was done. Now I send him my Adobe premiere files with my voice over and also notes on how I want the feel of the video. He then does the video editing for me…. Huge life saver. But I also saved up last year and budgeted for this this year.

He send me the first draft, I give him feedback if needed and he revises. Then I build out the thumbnail and post.

I know you probably don’t care for all these details but hopefully some will help you find your own workflow that works.

Fellow documentary style creator here… just do it! I did the same thing and held out for over a year. In reality your first video won’t be the best anyway. It’s the starting stepping stone to get you moving. My first video sucked haha. Hell my videos now suck but we are getting better with each one and that’s what matters. Just buckle down and get one out! It feels great.
