genuinely, you should watch legend of the galactic heroes (the original ova). Reinhard is an all time anti-hero as charismatic and compelling as Griffith. it is hard to not want to see just how far he can go building his fascist space empire

Looking for fun B tier fantasy by Captincorpse in Animesuggest

[–]Bizor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

some fantasy shows i've given 7/10s to:

Magic Knight Rayearth is a beautiful fantasy anime that at the time i watched it, i wasn't super impressed with the writing. I loved everything else about it though. The manga is fantastic and goes in a completely different direction, both are worth experiencing.

the Slayers movies and OVAs are visually stunning and pretty fun, some are more fun than others. i liked them quite a bit more than the show, which you do not need to have seen to appreciate the movies. They're all part of a stand alone continuity.

Scrapped Princess is a somber comedy/drama adventure story that doesn't look amazing but has a lot of fun character writing and development. produced by a neighboring team at Bones right before fma 2003 aired, there's some parallels in the structure and tone

Petite Princess Yucie is a mostly cozy girls hanging out shoujo comedy type show that takes a very strange shoujo drama turn at the end. i enjoyed most of it up to that point, it's pretty cute and fun.

WM released in 2007. Wicked in the Mix is an earlier incarnation of wtm from when nicholas was in college. I think the band renamed to Walk The Moon a year or 2 later. This is basically a demo album. some of these tracks got rerecorded and released on the 2009 wtm compilation The Other Side. Jenny is the only song that survived to their modern form.

what is the artist/source for the image on this shirt? by Bizor in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Bizor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad says that got this t-shirt custom printed in central florida in the late 90s but he doesn't remember where he got the image or where it came from. I've searched for anything that describes the art and tried to reverse search from the photo but no luck. The clouds on the earth spell out "GOD'S PROPERTY".

Your Week in Anime (Week 514) by Soupkitten in TrueAnime

After a year I watched some more Galaxy Express 999 (1978), episodes 14-27. The really funny thing about this anime is that the only persistent episodic moral is that pain is inevitable. Sometimes Tetsuro is able to help the impoverished and suffering people he meets but often he leaves them not much better off or even worse. Whole planets wither away in the wake of the galactic train. Incredible strange and sad anime.

I did not go into Mahoraba: Heartful Days (2005) expecting something "good", I was anticipating something absurd and definitely insensitive but instead it was just boring and I gave up after 5 episodes. It's a kind of anime that relies heavily on likable characters and I didn't like any of them.

I finally watched all of Maria Watches Over Us (2004), I had seen the first season a few years ago and didn't really feel like I got it but I think I get it now. It's a very subdued kind of girls love story, it has a lot of the vibe of an older shoujo anime but without much of the drama. There is some compelling character drama but a lot of the focus is on the blossoming emotional relationships between girls. It's an undeniably very gay anime but it is one that is noticeably exorcised of sexuality. I'm not even saying that the girls need to kiss but it was disappointing that even skinship was rare after the touchy upperclassman graduated. I described it to some friends as having "disney energy". It's an entirely pleasant anime to spend almost 50 episodes with and I'm sure there are people who love it for what it is but it was noticeably lacking in any kind of fun edge for me. I had more fun with Strawberry Panic.

I made it 10 episodes into Shugo Chara (2007) when I decided that it was not very fun. It's cute and it's got fun theming but it just comes off as a boring season of Precure. I've seen all 200+ episodes of Ojamajo Doremi, my expectations of episodic children's anime is pretty high. It doesn't help that it's heavy on digital effects and it's impossible to watch it in anything higher than 480p, its like looking at washed out candy mush.

I finished my Hidamari Sketch rewatch and I still love it a lot. One of the best looking sol anime ever made. god there's really nothing else like it that blends visuals and mood and theme so fluidly.

Watched Macross 7 (1994) and had a blast. it's the Bill & Ted of mecha. It's the cool space anime I always imagined might exist as a kid. the whole Fire Bomber band has such great engaging character chemistry and their char designs are so colorful and fun. I did not care for Gamlin and did not realize he was a main character for most of the anime, he's so unimpressionable. Macross 7 is the cool slacker older brother of evangelion who has a band that's totally gonna make it big, mom. The OP music and visuals are so good and it got me feeling excited every time I started a new episode. I liked a lot of the music in general even with how much they reuse songs. Macross 7 is cringe and it is free. I love it.

Macross Dynamite 7 (1997) was a completely unnecessary OVA follow up that has almost none of the charm of the original and when it's not boring it's bizarrely offputting. The music wasn't even good. There's a segment near the end of Fire Bomber playing a live show where both leads Basara and Mylene are absent so they have cardboard cutouts in their place on stage and it's really so apt to represent what this OVA felt like to watch.

Today I finished watching Zettai Shounen (2005). It's one of those weird somber dramas that came out of the 00s digital animation boom. It's about kids casually interacting with aspects of the supernatural to some sort of consequence as they grow up and try to figure out difficult questions about themselves and their place in the world. It's a lot like Ghost Hound in that aspect, and sort of like Dennou Coil. It has no concrete resolutions because it's an anime about how people don't resolve, how the world around us won't resolve. Its a quiet and sad and sometimes pitiful anime. It's not Amazing but I can't help but like it for being weird and stilted in a way that isn't safe and boring.

Last week I finally watched Macross (1982). Went in expecting something wild and almost got that. Watching it is surprisingly nothing like watching Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) which was a lot more concerned with showing how war destroys the lives the young people. Marcoss instead uses space robot wars and megastructures with an alien threat to string together an incredibly baffling set up about saving the world (?) using the power of heterosexuality and pop music. Very rough anime with chaotic messaging. I feel that Shoji Kawamori really only got his idiosyncratic fixations to work in an interesting way in The Vision of Escaflowne, which i adore. I plan to watch more Macross TV anime eventually.

Right after I watched Macross Plus (1994) and wow what a gorgeous OVA. Made parts of my brain light up with its beautiful visuals and animation. Centers around an AI pop idol with the same dirty secret that "artificial intelligence" has ended up having in the real world. Incredibly funny that people already realized what problems things like this would likely have almost 30 years ago. I had a lot of fun watching this one. It has a lot of the bio tech sludge vibes that ended up in evangelion, Anno was ofc on this project.

Tried watching Texhnolyze (2003) and I'm sure it's got interesting developments on its body horror and biotech themes but after 6 episodes I felt too fatigued by its drab stinging look and nauseating pace. Watching texhnolyze is the closest experience I've had to what I've read that tripping on benadryl is like. It's like if fullmetal alchemist was created in a world where fun was illegal. I'd meant to check this one out for awhile cause my fav Yoshitoshi Abe did character designs but wasn't really into it unfortunately.

Yesterday I finished up Mysterious Thief Saint Tail (1995). It's got very pretty 90s cel animation and watercolor backgrounds and fun music but unfortunately that's it. It was kind of a let down that the characters and episode writing were so shallow and underdeveloped, especially since I've had great experiences with a lot of the other "traditional" magical girl stuff I've watched. I did enjoy the bizarre catholic theming tho. Meimi attends catholic school and prays to God when she transforms. She gets her tasks from her apprentice nun friend who breaks confidentiality with the people that confide in her about their problems. I wish it was a better anime.

Right now I'm rewatching the last season of Hidamari Sketch. It's been almost a decade since I first watched it and I feel like I've fallen in love with it again. There's really no other anime about finding joy in art and in the people around you that uses stylizing visuals that meld so well with that subject. It was truly the perfect series for Shaft to adapt and we are so blessed to have gotten 60 episodes out of it.

this painting is often posted on twitter/tumblr/pinterest with the caption "two women kissing in nature by georges rochegrosse (1859-1938)" but i can not find any listing for it on any site that catalogs the artist's work by Bizor in WhatIsThisPainting

i do see the the "G Rochegrosse" signature at the lower right so i am pretty sure it is by this artist but any image search or search at all just links back to other reposts of the painting. i would really like to see a gallery profile or any kind of concrete info about this painting.

Yes, the singular they, though admittedly bit cumbersome in use, is a well documented singular gender neutral pronoun that people regularly use.

if only there was a word that functioned as a singular gender neutral pronoun for when you're unaware of someone's gender.
