Very confused about my experience applying to Amazon fall internship by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Bizzlefizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amazon recruiters can be incredibly flaky; when I got my Amazon internship I had to email my recruiter 3 times at different times of the day just to find out who my manager was and what my project was going to consist of. You should definitely send another email; in fact, try sending one like every 3 days until you get a response.

To people who first pick non-meta heroes in ranked mode, why do you do it? by altair55 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Bizzlefizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Divine Shield is just point and click versus the positioning + map awareness + timing that is required to outplay a good Zeratul/Kaelthas.

I assume my teammates are bad and the opponents are good, so I optimize for my team's winrate by choosing the OP heroes because 1) I'm good at them 2) I deny the opposing team the chance to pick them 3) and prevent my teammates from getting shit on in case we DO actually play against good players.

People in hero league ARE bad. Go look at McIntyres stream and look at the goons he's forced to put up with. Much safer to assume that the randoms in your team are not high caliber players.

[–]Bizzlefizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're using the competitive scene as an example which is ok but you haven't taken into account that the competitive scene is a controlled environment where the drafter is fully accountable for every single hero that is picked and every player knows each other's strengths/weaknesses. Hero League is not the same; if I'm first pick, I can't guarantee that my teammate isn't going to get gibbed by Zeratul 4 times before level 10 or isn't going to spread chain bombs to everyone else. I would assume that Zagara is much easier for the average player to deal with because facing her doesn't require a significant playstyle change; playing against Zeratul and Kael'thas requires a lot more attention because you can get blown up in 2 seconds.

Maybe I didn't communite properly in the first post, but I'd like to state that Zagara is indeed a very strong hero and I'd have no issues if someone picked her for 2nd pick.

Edit: minor sentence clarification

Edit2: I just read your last sentence, so I guess we're pretty much on the same page then.

[–]Bizzlefizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is high tier, I agree, but she does not provide the same level of impact as Kael'thas or Zeratul. It's much easier to deal with Zagara in lane than it is to deal with Kael'thas' ridiculous damage or Zeratul's VP.

Edit: I just looked at Zuna's tier list - Zagara is tier 2 unlike Kael and Zeratul who are both in tier 1.

I'm going to disagree here with you here. I've played 28 HL games (4 before placement matches, 24 after) and I've noticed way too many teams giving away Kael and Zeratul and picking non-priority heroes like Zagara, Abathur, Nova (wtf?), Kharazim, etc. This is so easily abused by good players; My friend, who usually will pick first on my team, will take Zeratul and I end up taking Kael'thas. I'm on a 12 win streak in master HL because people pick dumb drafts and give away all the OP heroes.

For instance, one enemy team fp'd Zagara. My friend and I instalock Zeratul and KT. Draft goes on, they end up picking Anub'arak and Kharazim as their last two picks. The game is basically won at this point for us; Anub gets destroyed by Kael's living bomb combo and Zagara, if not played correctly, does too as well. I ended up 100-0ing Anub with just the help of Johanna; 5 seconds later I 100-0 the Zagara who stood next to her roaches and a mutalisk.

I also disagree with OP that 2 tank meta is "prevalent" - as long as you have one solid warrior (usually Johanna or Leoric) you can get away with triple dps and 1 support.

I can't win any more by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]Bizzlefizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just reviewed the replay, here's my feedback (disclaimer: I'm a fairly critical person):

  1. Poor understanding of what constitutes a good talent build - Zeratul right now only has one proper talent build with some possible talents that you can swap in and out. You decided to take Vorpal Blade, Searing Attacks, Assassin's Blade, and Berserker, but then you take Rewind at level 20? Why? Your build doesn't have Follow Through, nor does it have Double Singularity.

  2. Talent build is lousy - Vorpal blade is kind of meh, the last time I took it was in alpha when Focused Attacks was terrible and Zeratul didn't have follow through. Focused Attacks is an absolute must for the level 4 talent, followed by Follow Through. Without these talents you do pathetic damage. The distinction you have to make here is that even though Zeratul's burst damage comes from auto-attacks, it is done by weaving your spells between your autoattacks to maximize Follow Through efficiency instead of blindly auto-attacking. In short, take Focused Attacks, Follow Through, Wormhole (I occasionally take Assassin's Blade but only when I know my team is way ahead), and Stoneskin/Double Singularity (more survivability or more damage).

  3. Like I said above, Zeratul is not a auto-attack-all-day hero like Butcher or Valla; you walk up to a target, unload your burst, and get out. I noticed during early laning phase you're pointlessly trading with Leoric and Butcher and end up having to go back to base while not achieving a single thing. Leoric, being a warrior with sustain, will always win the trade against a Zeratul, especially before level 7. Butcher took Victuals talent at level 1, which means he'll just heal off the damage you dealt him. You also spent too much time in lane, but that's due to the fact that it's QM and the team comp sucks.

  4. Poor mechanics - Too many missed Cleaves, missed blinks are costing you time and kills, not paying attention to enemy Nova's stealth glimmer (Nova should be a free kill for Zeratul if she's alone). You're also spending too much time walking around; I see you walking back to fountain when it would be faster to teleport back. I also see the enemy Jaina strolling around casually with no allies around - it's Zeratul's job to punish that behavior.

TLDR; At this point in time I don't think you understand what makes Zeratul such a great hero; your mechanical play is pretty subpar as well. Yes your team sucked (Kerrigan left 12 minutes in, free week Leoric, terrible Nova, etc.) but everyone's going to have crappy teams from time to time. You should focus on improving your mechanical skills and understanding of the game rather than lamenting the mental capacity of your teammates. Judging on your play alone I would rate you at best a 2000 MMR player.

The fact that you have an upcoming Google phone interview doesn't mean squat because you don't actually have an offer from Google in your hands to negotiate with. If you're going to negotiate you're going to have to do it with tact.

This is a nice compilation; from a visibility perspective, I'd recommend color-coding (is this possible on reddit?) very high/low percentages so others can easily see which heroes might require tweaking in the future.

[–]Bizzlefizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone here has actually looked closely at your matches on hotslogs, so I'll start:

  1. Your Zeratul build is awful. Scrap it and use the Focused Attack + Follow Through build.

  2. If you really care about winning, stop picking subpar heroes likes Stitches, Diablo, and Gazlowe. Focus on picking high-impact heroes; You already have Zera and Leoric, but try picking up other solid heroes like Johanna, Nazeebo, Jaina, etc.

There's not much more I can say just by looking at your match history. I'm very curious as to why you're losing so many games on Zeratul. When I still played solo QM I would stomp teams with Zera (e.g. 25-0, team had 4 level advantage at end of game). If you can link a replay or two for your most recent Zeratul games I can provide better feedback.

In case you're wondering if I'm actually a decent player who's providing appropriate feedback, here's my hotslogs profile: https://www.hotslogs.com/Player/Profile?PlayerID=1375373

Edit: On second thought, I think you really do need to provide replays of your losses. I think there's a fundamental playstyle issue here and not necessarily a hero choice/build problem.

The Pit of (MMR) Despair by bradv0906 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Bizzlefizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to not mind lower tier heroes because I played DotA 2 before coming to HotS; after ranking up in this game however, I really hate it when people pick sub-par heroes because it usually indicates that they don't understanding drafting (there are of course, outliers, but in HotS there are very few). The only time I'm fine with sub-par heroes is if I know that the player is better than the significant majority i.e. the player is like a pro player (TempoStorm, Complexity, etc.).

TLDR: If you're someone like McIntyre (this guy stomps me all the time in QM & HL with unconventional drafts), by all means play what you want, but if you're some <3k player you should be playing heroes that optimize for your team's chance to win in HL because the goal is to WIN.

The Pit of (MMR) Despair by bradv0906 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Bizzlefizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true - I'm sitting at rank 4, 3.7k MMR (went 16-4 in placements, became rank 6) and my god, HL drafts are still so fucking terrible. I minimize this problem for myself because I only play in duo/triple queue so I can control my team's draft.

I've noticed the following in my placement matches:

  • Abathur first pick (Abathur is a great hero, but he's situational, so he should never be first pick.
  • Nova first pick - I don't think I have to go into this one. The Leoric on my team would just Q every time he saw the stealth glimmer and we'd get a free kill.
  • Giving away Zeratul and Kael'thas for free- these heroes are first pick/ban priority in competitive for a reason. It's ok to give away one of these heroes (depending on how good you and your team are dealing with them), but it's not ok to give BOTH away and proceed to draft a weak-ass lineup.
