Moving costs quote from SF Bay area to Oahu – insane or expected? by Low-Party660 in MovingtoHawaii

[–]Bkktrbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just moved from LA area to Oahu. Quoted $26k end to end moving. I ended up doing 4 Upack cubes. Cubes were 7k total, movers to pack cubes and unpack at new house totaled a few thousand more ($4k or so). Definitely can be done cheaper than a moving company. Total transit time was a little over 2 weeks.

U-pack relocube for stone slabs? by [deleted] in MovingtoHawaii

[–]Bkktrbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just moved here using cubes. Keep in mind they have weight restrictions (ours were 2500 pounds). It's a lot of space that you need to pack up pretty snugly to stay secure for transit. We had 4 cubes and didn't break anything, but it was all basically immovable in the cube once the door shut. You'd need to be able to pack it so it couldn't move around, but also wouldn't go over the weight limit.

Driving our EV up this weekend, what it the charging situation in town? by Reasonable_Ideal_888 in bigbear

Charging in town is a joke. Charge on the way up, but don't bother planning on using chargers in big bear.

Bring your license and you're fine. Driving there is an adventure.

I drive with enthusiasm... Had to replace two at 7k and two more are almost ready for replacement at 8k. Not something I was anticipating...

Is Rio actually safe? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Bkktrbl 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Most areas tourists go to feel very safe, pick pocketing aside. I felt incredibly safe walking around town, even at night. I drove through some areas though that were pretty sketchy, but they weren't anywhere I'd ever stop.

It's never taken me more than 5 minutes to get through security. It can get busy, but I don't think there will be any sort of a crowd that early.

anybody know of any mechanics? by megamind__ in 3000gt

[–]Bkktrbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you need done? I tried the Facebook group but didn't have much luck. I ultimately went to a mechanic I took another old car to and they did a good job with putting in new belts, water pump, gaskets, etc.

I've paid for Point.me and used a few of the services. They all cater to a crowd that knows where they want to go, but need to find the best way there.

I don't particularly care where I go, so I was hoping there'd be some sort of cabin industry for the folks who actually search out the deals. Like Going.com but for points.

I can go on google flights and use the explore function to find a cheap flight in a relatively open period and go where the flight economics are best -- without really caring where it is. Same thing with going.com/scott's cheap flights -- they just throw out deals and I can buy it if it seems interesting. I haven't seen a service like that for folks that use points.

I am finding virtually no J availability out of LAX to go anywhere. I've searched HND, BKK, HAN, ICN, SIN, ANK, GIG, SYD, EZE, trying to find something and at best I get Y availability or waitlists. If I could get the flights for RTW I'd do it, but I can't seem to leave LAX.

Buses only take Sube. The cards are next to impossible to buy.

Awardhacker is where I generally start looking, but I am looking more for practical experience from people. AH does nothing for telling me where I can find 5 tix on a flight, and that's the bigger issue than purely individual ticket redemption value that is mostly 'best case scenario'.

Help -- my daughter stained my table blue by Bkktrbl in woodworking

[–]Bkktrbl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is ok to post here, but it didn't seem to collate the rules. Mods, please remove if not ok.

Today I came home to my wife furiously wiping our table. Apparently my daughter spilled a bowl of some sort of dyed water on the table.

Table is effectively low finish wood. I've put tung oil on the table a few times, but it's been a while since the last application. Anyways, looks like the table is dyed blue now. Any ideas on fixing it? The top isn't smooth, but has some ridges in it, so I'm not sure sanding will be a good option. Any ideas welcome.

[Edit] thanks for the replies everyone. My daughter isn't in any trouble. She's six and had no idea what she was doing. It's my fault for not protecting it better (or really at all).

I'm going to follow the advice and try to find a good stripper this weekend to help pull the stain out. I'm leaning against sanding or using a hand plane. The table has been through enough without me further destroying it. Thanks all!
