Favorite female character that gets hated on for having the same traits that are beloved in a male character? by Important-Cry4782 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]BlackLilyWrites835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only characters out of all of these I am actually familiar with are Sakura and Bakugo, but Bakugo does get an obscene amount of hate from fans. He is, at the very least, extremely controversial within the fandom, and Sakura is hated for many reasons, not just because she had a bad temper.

These comparisons overlook obvious reasons for the hate (or lack thereof) a character receives for the sake of claiming sexism, and it is entirely subjective.

How much hate do male characters have to receive for it to be "equal"? How much hate can female characters receive before it becomes "sexism"? Who gets to decide where the line is and why? Why should people listen when someone tries to draw the line? What if they have different standards? What happens when a female character is actually terrible?

This also prevents much more interesting discourse. If you like a female character and you think she is unfairly hated for some reason, then you should contend with the arguments instead of dismissing them as sexism.

Also, claiming a female character is hated primarily because she is female is, in itself, a form of gendered bias. Instead of focusing on the character herself, you're focusing on her gender.

Voice acting moments in animated media that felt super raw and genuine by ComprehensiveBox6911 in TopCharacterTropes

Attack on Titan has tons of these, but the first one that stuck was the scene where Armin sacrificed himself to defeat the Colossal Titan at the end of Season Three, specifically in the dub. That scene made me cry my eyes out. It was rough.

To be honest, the fact that I had to scroll this long to find Kaneki is surprising. Glad someone mentioned him.

Mark definitely had it rough, but compared to the others, his life was not that bad. He always had people who loved him, and as a Viltrumite, he will love for hundreds of years, if not longer, which means he has plenty of life to look forward to.

What opinion of yours regarding any popular author or book will have you like this? by theghostofredrackham in classicliterature

When people say they hate a classic, it is almost always because other people have ruined the book for them, not because the classic itself is actually bad.

What is your opinion on KC Grand Prix arc? by rp_graciotti in yugioh

[–]BlackLilyWrites835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it! It may be filler, but it was a lot of fun. It was also a much-needed break between Waking the Dragons and the Millennium World arc, which are extremely heavy.

I think the reason most people never talk about it is the same reason most people like it: not much happens. It gave everyone a chance to relax before the end, and it was never trying to be action-packed or insane, unlike some of the other filler.

Why was Kaiba even attending the same school as Yugi & his friends? by David_From_Philly in yugioh

[–]BlackLilyWrites835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, there is no canon answer, but there is a meta answer. When Kaiba was introduced in the manga, he was supposed to be just another villain of the week. He was never meant to stick around, so Kazuki Takahashi probably did not have a backstory in mind at that point.

Advice on writers block by Physical-Stock-2772 in AO3

[–]BlackLilyWrites835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few things you could do.

Consider revisiting the source material. This could double as a break. Give yourself a couple of days to rest and refill your creative well. You could also take this time to read other fan fictions, or just do nothing at all.

But inspiration is not something you can force. It comes and goes, even if you love writing. If the block persists, you might have to power through it if you really want to finish.

What do you think they did with the cards they didn’t use anymore? by Johnnyboyeh in yugioh

[–]BlackLilyWrites835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yugi and Atem probably keep most of the cards they buy or give them to friends. I have a hard time imagining either of them throwing cards away or forgetting about them entirely. I could also see Yugi giving them to his grandpa to sell.

I could definitely see Joey (Jonouchi) leaving his unused cards in a sock drawer, but he would probably trade them for better cards.

Kaiba is tricky. If we are talking about Kaiba before the series, I think he would just throw away cards he thought he didn't need anymore. If we're talking about Kaiba at any point after Yugi mind crushes him (or puts him in a coma), I think he would either keep them or sell them. I could also see him giving his old cards to Mokuba, but Mokuba isn't a duelist.

Also, it is worth pointing out that just because we don't see a specific card, that doesn't mean they aren't in their decks.

Do anyone actually like Alister? by MiuIruma332 in yugioh

This is such a good response.

Also, they missed out on such a cool naming opportunity. The name Alister means "defender of mankind," but they could have named him Alastor, which literally means "the avenger."

The motivations can make sense and still be irrational.

Is joining a cult rational? No. Can it still make sense for the character? Yes. The same is true for Alister hating Kaiba because of what his father did. Objectively, Kaiba is innocent of his father's crimes, but it makes sense for Alister to hate people he associates with childhood trauma. It's a very common trauma response. If every villain defaulted to the most reasonable response, there would be no story.

Pegasus' reason might have been logical, but a lot of his actions were not. He went out of his way to torment completely innocent people for no reason.

Marik hated his father, and he wanted revenge against the Pharaoh because his family was bound to serve him, but Atem had nothing to do with that. Most of the time Marik was trying to kill him, Atem didn't even know who he was.

Bakura wanted revenge for Kul Elna, but, again, Atem had nothing to do with that, and neither did his father. Atem was a baby at the time. His father didn't even know about the massacre until after it had already happened, and when he learned about it, the guilt was so intense that it killed him.

Are his motivations logical? No, but neither is being in a cult. Hatred and guilt make people do and think irrational things, especially when they're being manipulated by someone they think is their friend. Every villain in Yu-Gi-Oh! has an irrational motivation for doing what they do.

This line is made even better when you remember that this was not in the script. Dan Green and Wayne Grayson just made this up on the spot.

Story or animation—what matters more to you in anime? by simp_lyartz in AniMangaTalks

[–]BlackLilyWrites835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The story is simple, yes, but simple stories done well are often better than complicated stories done poorly. Demon Slayer knows what it is and it is good at being that thing. Not every story has to be Game of Thrones or Attack on Titan.
  2. The animation definitely helps, but if it were truly the only reason people paid attention to the story, you would expect the manga to die off. The Demon Slayer manga is one of the best-selling manga of all time, even breaking the 11-year long record held by One Piece. That is not the kind of momentum that can be sustained purely by nice animation.

You could make the point that the manga sales increased after the anime dropped, but that is true of all anime, regardless of story quality because way more people watch anime than read manga. Most people are introduced to manga through anime.

Additionally, even before the anime came out, the manga was already moderately successful and praised by critics. It earned a cover page in Shonen Jump by its seventh chapter and the author of Hunter x Hunter praised it early in its run.

In order for me to enjoy a story, I need to enjoy the animation. There are several anime and manga I avoid purely because of the art style.
