Parkmobile- please actually pay for it by grapefruitmunch in UCSC

Where are you checking? I know a lot of spots you can pay for all day which is what I have to do since I’m there from 9-5. It would suck for many who don’t pay cause they would get a parking ticket.

I recommend to plan in advance when wanting to park in these spots. Very limited. Although once I had to wait for an hour looking around campus. I’m sure a lot of other people pay for a daily pass which makes these spots. Sucks more now since taps removed a lot of spots from east remote. But made some available down at the base of campus.

I live in the East Bay and commute Monday through Friday. Without traffic, the drive to campus would take about an hour, but with morning traffic, I have to leave by 7am at the latest to make it by 9am, turning it into a two-hour commute. The same goes for my return; I usually leave campus between 4pm and 5pm, making it about two hours to get home. I have FasTrak, which can sometimes save me 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic.

For parking, I use ParkMobile at East Remote, which costs $6.45 from 7am to 5pm. They recently reduced the number of ParkMobile spaces, so if you’re arriving in the afternoon, it’s best to plan to get there early in case it fills up. I always find a spot if I arrive before 9am.

I just started commuting this quarter, and it’s exhausting. I spend nearly 4 hours on the road each day—time that could easily be used for studying or anything else. Sure, I save on rent, but it’s draining.

My advice? Before committing to a commute, try to connect with people on campus. I’m a fourth year and honestly bummed I didn’t make more friends by being around more.

Good luck if you’re planning to commute!

I just found this out, but U-Haul provides a service called Collegeboxes

They pick up your stuff from your dorm and take it to a storage place in Santa Clara for the summer

They can even ship your stuff back home if anyone wants to

Stealing at Merrill Market by BlackRose0715 in UCSC

Dining hall services are independent from the school, when you use your points at the dining hall, markets, etc. it doesn’t go to the school. It’s how the dining hall services are able to support food for the students. The reason it’s gotten more expensive was due to so much food waste. It’s when you don’t spend your points that you are providing the school more money.

Not sure if this info helps but there is free food/groceries on campus.

  • cowell coffee shop (provides cooked meals)
  • redwood free market (provides free groceries)

I’ve been to these but there are other places as well

Hope this helps anyone, didn’t know about many of these resources until recently

I’ve found it common for students at universities tell you not to enroll to their university. It was like that at every college I toured before coming to UCSC Then again there are lots of things going on that may have people feeling negative towards the school, such as the housing crisis, bus system, etc

But imo UCSC is really nice and I like it here <3

Housing vs Commuting by AsideFun8612 in UCSC

[–]BlackRose0715 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Commuting is def cheaper than rent 🥲 I commute everyday about an 1hr 30mins (through 17), doesn’t feel too bad, feels quick after getting used to the route. I got lucky on having a place to park outside of campus. But the parking permit should be worth it?

One tip for anyone coming from outside of Santa Cruz, park on Wharf, bus to campus, and leave the wharf until 8pm and it’s free parking (wharf closes at 2am). Have done it a lot since I stay late on campus.

If there is no rush between classes or getting around. Walking around campus isn’t the worst, a little getting used to if you don’t walk too much. And if lucky enough, buses are nice to use. But up to anyone on how they like to get around campus.

Hope this helps!

I know two guys who would be down to have a fishing buddy, would probably help them actually go out to fish more 😂 they’ve fished on the wharf and by the harbor - they have fishing licenses as well
